Porter to.........Villanova???

As much as I think pm is terrible.. that kyle Neptune bum might actually be worse.

So from that perspective, pm actually makes theoretical sense. I cannot imagine this being even 0.01% true however

Kelvin stayed for a dozen years and had plenty of offers. If he was one foot out the door, he wouldn’t have stayed that long.

Kelvin DEFINITELY had one foot out the door during his first few years. That was evidenced by all the interviews he went on, including TEXAS. He hadn't won an NCAA Tournament game at the time he was going on those interviews, so he wasn't in high demand by schools who were higher on the totem pole than OU. I believe part of the problem was the dysfunction in the athletic department prior to hiring Joe C. I think what also changed his mind was first inking Ryan Humphrey followed by Hollis Price two years later. By then, he figured he could win at OU. He wasn't going on public interviews after that until Indiana came calling.

As for Villanova, I laughed the other day with the mentioning of Chris Collins of Northwestern going to Villanova. While Coach Moser has accomplished more than Collins (don't shoot the messenger), I can't imagine a school that has won two National Championships in the past decade interviewing either. It's a top-10 job. Here's a thought. How about hiring a top-10 head coach? Of course, if they hire Moser, then no alimony! :)

Was he better? The results without Buddy were not better.

Even if Moser had been the last team in the tourney instead of the first team out, it would be a conversation, but a relatively short one. Lon has been better, but it's kinda a midget fight at that point. I've watched less and less OU basketball every season for about a decade straight now. I try not to post much anymore, because nobody likes a wet blanket, but it's harder and harder not to be one every year.

The other element is similar to last cycle.

Moser’s job is safe now that he’s made the tournament. And in total fairness, he’s done a really good job in the final stretch of the season.

OU doesn’t prefer to pay the buyout. Like with Venables, it’s cheaper for OU to find a couple of extra dollars lying around to support MBB. Buying Moser out is the last resort. Was much more likely if they missed, obviously.

Basically

1a. Float name out there, hope another program takes the bait, especially if said program is basketball-first

1b. Float name out there, hope it gets you more resources from your current job if/when no one will hire you

If we'd known in advance of the season we'd land a 9 seed with this roster, I think just about anybody would have applauded. No way we can fire him at this point, and we have to save up for a potential Venables buy-out next year. We will never pay a buyout on somebody who made the tourney.

He's obviously not getting fired now, and if he beats Hurley, he might appear on a few extra radars. Still, a guy in his late 50s who has only coached four years at a high major with one NCAA tournament is only going to get so many phone calls. Like CoachTalk said, it was probably his agent who started the rumor.

I'm surprised pm's agent didn't throw out the Lakers being a possible spot for pm while they were at it

I'm not saying I'd be sorry to see PM go--though this strong stretch of play and making the tourney has me feeling a wee bit more generous toward him--but if he departs, I fear it'll be spun as a negative for OU. Nationally, he seems to be more highly thought of than by OU fans, and despite the way many OU fans would feel about it, a coach ditching one school for another pontentially paints the first school in a bad light. If he left for Nova, it would help avoid that, I suppose, since it's a basketball-centric school and a successful program.

Lon Kruger made us better every day from the day he was hired culminating in a final four. After the final four, he should’ve retired. He also lost his top two assistants, so he basically was retired.
True. Never underestimate how influential assistants are on a staff. The impact of losing Lew Hill (RIP) and Steve Henson was huge. Just like the current staff for PM was much better than year 1.

We’ve been fortunate when we’ve done well that we had a great staff, going back to Tubbs.

Once the turnover happened with LK, he wasn’t the same and that’s when the downhill trend started. Of course losing 4 starters before the portal didn’t help either.

Continuity of staff and roster, or lack of it, has been a big factor in our struggles the last 10 years.
