Possibilities this week

Good news today maybe?

Just a hunch. 6’9 F Akol Mawein (2021) of Navarro College

If we land Mawein, I don't think there is ANY doubt we've substantially upgraded our inside game.

T. Groves / Chargois / Mawein >>> Manek / Kuath / Iwuakor

Still have J. Groves and Hill that are small/stretch 4's as well.

Agree 100%

SUBSTANTIALLY UPGRADED is right! I never thought I would see the day when our front court would be equal to or stronger than our backcourt.

If he can score, that's wonderful. But I hope he's the type of guy who brings the things every night when scoring can come and go... defense/rebounding, physicality, and mental toughness.

I'm sure Mawein can guard the 5, but he's a 4. More perimeter oriented than inside oriented.

Why do you always look at the offensive side of things when you talk about positions?

It's more about what you can defend and simply who you are on the court with. In today's basketball, offensive positions are almost non-existent. Teams frequently play 4, sometimes even 5 guards. I'd think Mawein would be the 4 MOST of the time (playing along side T. Groves or Chargois). But I could see him being the 5 at times playing alongside J. Groves or Hill. Depends on a host of factors. It's okay to have a 5 that can play outside on offense.

I agree with you guys...but when my team played Mercer at Mercer my last year at the college level, we started 5 guards...we only had 5 TO's in 40 minutes but got beat by 30 because we couldn't guard their 6'10" center who dropped like 38 on us. My biggest player was 6'5 so we didn't really have anyone to cover him anyway so we went with 5 guards to handle their press and tried to simply harass the big as much as possible...obviously that didn't work. LOL

I don't disagree with you, but you jumped all over me in the other thread for saying the exact same thing about Jalen Hill, i.e. that JHill would play the 5 in certain lineups as necessary due to foul trouble or special situations, but that he was primarily a 4.

I even started with "Mawein can guard the 5...". So I'm unsure what I'm doing that's any different than you.

We're saying the same thing. Mawein's the 4. He'll play off of Groves like Aher Aguak at Loyola played off Krutwig. He'll also be the 5 in certain lineups.

Let me put it into perspective for you, Stikboy:

Manek 10.O ppg/ 5.8 rpg
Iwuakor 2.9 ppg/2.6 rpg
Kuath 5.1 ppg/3.8 rpg

T Groves 17.2 ppg/8.0 rpg
J Groves 9.3 ppg/4.2 rpg
Chargois 8.8 ppg/5.4 rpg

Mawein (if he comes) 12.2 ppg/5.2rpg

I think it’s safe to say our front court will be an upgrade even if we don’t get Mawein. Add him to the mix and the word “substantial” is in play. I also think he checks all of the boxes you outlined in your post.

this is spot on who you can guard is what "position" you play ...

We’ve definitely upgraded our bigs.
Kur was a shot blocking fool and should have played a lot more we’ll miss his defense. He was not a good position defender but a long athletic freak. His offense was dunks and layups.
Manek was a good shooter and I’m thankful for his contributions but I’ve never seen a Sooner surrender so many points, such a high shooting percentage, and offensive rebounds to his man
Iwuakor is a 6’5 1/2” or 6’6” guy with a broken jumper trying to get by as a post player through athleticism. There’s a reason he averaged less than 3 points and 3 rebounds per game. If he was 6’9” he’d be all conference but he’s lucky if he’s a true 6’6”. He’s fiesty as all get out but not tall nor skilled enough to be a difference maker in paint. He’s Doo’s size without the midrange jumper or the basketball IQ.

I’d rather have Chargois than both Manek and Kur. And Ethan is the transfer the fan base is least excited about. But he’s listed at 6’9 and 235 prolly about 6’8” 235 but for a for a big who shoots so many threes and doesn’t have a true post game he mixes it up really we on defense, is a solid rebounder and is an exceptional passer. He can post up shorter guys on mismatches. But he plays defense and rebounds like a true post player. He averaged over 12 PPG as Soph.

Groves is a true inside out post player with back to the basket moves and the ability to shoot out to 3 point line. He rebounds well, blocks shots, passes extremely well and is a legit threat to get hot and dominate down low. He’s a guy who has to be accounted for by the defense at all times. Our best big man since Blake. I’d rather have Groves than all the bigs we had last year Manek, Kur and Iwuakor.

Is the big JUCO Akol Maiwen (sp) who decommitted from ark coming?
When doing a comparison JUCO points should count or .60 per point and rebound vs D1. Anyone seen any film on him?
