“First of all, it’s always good to get a win. I thought we did some good things out there today defensively, with the exception of a couple of plays early. I thought we were pretty solid throughout. Second half, I thought we found a better rhythm offensively. We had some opportunities in the first half, we just didn’t finish plays strong. I thought we settled for some jump shots when we had opportunities to drive inside and finish some plays. I thought we did a better job in the second half.“It was good to see Calvin Newell have a good game. Calvin and I talked earlier today. He’s kind of in a transition phase to figure out how exactly to be most effective. He’s used to scoring his whole life and he’s maybe been a little bit less aggressive and trying to pass, not knowing when to score. One of the things we talked about was -- just be you, just go out and play. If you have opportunities to score, take shots with confidence. We have confidence in you. I thought we saw that today.
Calvin Newell
“He (Toles-Bey) had nine straight points and Coach (Capel) wanted me to come in and take him off of his hot streak. Once I did that, my defense led to offense.”

I love Capel saying, "we aren't the pretty girl anymore"

It just struck me that the same statement now applies to the OUHoops.com men's basketball board. Sad, really.

What's sad is you don't believe in freedom of speech. You want everybody to believe the same thing and in this case it's that the OU mens basketball program is in great shape with a great coach. Sorry, but that's not the case.

I've been an OU basketball fan longer than you've been alive. I was attending games before your parents were married. I can remember when the OU team played on a tartan surface under the wood court in the LNC. I remember watching former Big 8 greats Ed Nealy, Rolando Blackmon, Darnell Valentine, Steve Stipanovich, and Jon Sundvold come to Norman before packed raucous crowds and losing to the home sooners. I was there when Bliss left and Tubbs was hired and everybody thought the basketball program was going back to the cellar. Then I was there when Tubbs left and Sampson was hired and everybody again felt the program was headed to the doldrums. I've seen the program reach heights never before seen in OU mens basketball history. I can remember when Nebraska, ISU, KSU, Mizzou, and OSU all led the overall basketball series with OU but now OU leads every series.

So, pardon me if you don't like the dose of reality I provide because frankly I don't have the patience to deal with having a coach who is in over his head and was given the keys to a cadillac when he should be driving a GEO.

If you don't like the reality-laden posts, then move along to some other board or simply ignore the posts you refuse to believe.

Awesome post...

Well I can go back to Gar Heard, Alvin Adams and John McCulloh and if you don't like people that disagree with your threads then you need to go to another board. And if you think Jeff Capel was handed keys to a cadillac after three guys refuse to honor their commitment to the school, and probation for cheating, then maybe you should move on to another board.

I'm not the one complaining about opinions of other posters. I don't agree with some posters, such as yourself, but I'm not complaining about it with every post.

It's fine to disagree just as you disagree with me. IMO, if someone wants to complain about another posters opinion then go somewhere else.

BTW...I go back to Alvin Adams and John McCullough who played for 2 different coaches, too. Heard was just before my time.

It's kind of bizarre that we're going back to the "state of the program when Kelvin left" excuses again. That was 5 years ago. Also, the same coach was able to overcome those obstacles to advance to the elite 8 in his 3rd season, but now he can't even win 12 flipping games in his 5th season? I'm sorry but I don't think those excuses apply anymore. 5 years is more than enough time to get your own players in and win.

I simply said Capel wasn't handed keys to a cadillac, and I stand by that.

Considering a Cadillac is not a BMW, Mercedes, Maserati, Ferrari, or Porsche, which I would consider programs like KU, Duke, UNC, Kentucky, and maybe UCLA, I think Cadillac is an apt descriptor for the OU basketball program 5 years ago.

Now, it may have needed some tuning-up and a fresh set of tires, but it was a cadillac nonetheless.

He's got a point, We are a top 25 all time program. Out of 347 that makes us top 7%.

Oh I agree the program was all that, but not at that time. I'm not trying to bash you or anything, just saying some of the things that are being said about capel was said about sampson, tubbs and bliss. Lets just hope capel can turn this thing around quickly, and lets stand behind the kids.

Contrary to what many think, I really do want Capel and the players to succeed. If they succeed, OU succeeds, and we are all happy again. I want whats best for the PROGRAM.

I think most of us fall into this camp, but I just can't see that Capel is capable of it. Nothing he has done leads me to believe he can succeed without the best player on the planet on his team.

My mind can still be changed and winning 6-9 games in conference this year would certainly begin to convince me he may be able to do it. I just think that's a tall order.

And I am with you in your camp. I have stated many times I don't think he can, but I would love to be proven wrong. Nothing would make me happier than to be wrong in this instance

He needs to show some progress this year. I know we're all sitting around saying "wait til next year", but we don't need to fire out a 10-20 record this year.

Definitely agree, but I'd be content with a 14-16 record, maybe 13-17 if some of those 13 include a road big 12 win and a win over KU. Of course, it has to include wins over Texas and OSU as these are non-negotiable.

Lol @ the freedom of speech argument.
