OT: Football Talk

He would by far be our best option this year
I agree. On a team with poor line play, a guy who runs hard and can break tackles would be our best bet. One thing I know is that when Walker gets hit, he is not getting knocked backwards. He won't win any sprints, but he will get every last inch available.

Listening to the interview Teddy and Gabe just did with Gundy … wow. He doesn’t criticize Brent directly, but everything he says highlights how many areas Venables has failed in. Complete failure in the portal OL guys we signed, lack of player development on offense, poor play calls given our inability to move people on the line of scrimmage, and the thing that really stood out to me was his comment about the lack of a true quarterback coach. It’s just staggering that a coach who clearly isn’t an offensive coach himself wouldn’t have a specific coach on staff to coach the most important position on the field. Gundy mentioned the obvious fundamental issues our quarterbacks have. No doubt coaching (or lack thereof) plays a huge role in that. That is the kind of thing that makes me confident that Brent will never be a good head coach. It’s such a stupid, unforced error and one that no one should make, even if they are a first-time head coach.

We have guys like Losman and Johns on staff to help QBs.

And his point is, there shouldn’t be three guys helping quarterbacks. There needs to be one guy whose only job is to coach quarterbacks. Not multiple coaches who also have other coaching responsibilities. Clearly, the guys who have been dabbling in helping the quarterbacks have done a terrible job, because Arnold has gone backwards since he got on campus, and Hawkins didn’t exactly impress in his audition.

while some of that is fare ... it is also fare to say that gundy has an axe to grind ..

he has also said this year on multiple occasions .. that the OU defense is just average .. which is crazy town ..

I didn't understand his comment about why having 3 guys helping with QBs is bad

Too many cooks in the kitchen. You can't have three different voices in their heads.
I just don't agree with that. It's a silly argument. Imagine thinking more advice from different view points is a bad thing. What other profession does that?
I highly doubt it is like 3 individual coaches that don't interact. It is a team giving advice and training. I think the lack of development is more because of who is coaching them instead of how many are coaching them

I'm sure he isn't happy with how his time ended, but he didn't come across as overly bitter. And everything he said is factually accurate. Take the portal OL for example. None of the guys we brought in had been particularly good at previous stops, and a couple of them had injuries when we signed them. How is that a good plan when going into the SEC? And there is no question that the player development has been awful. Guys like Sexton and Taylor seemingly had bright futures a couple years ago, and now seem hopeless.

I haven't heard his comment about the defense. I think we are certainly better than average, but not as good as some seem to think.

Do NHL teams have 3 goalie coaches? MLB teams have three pitching coaches? Taking it outside sports, when I started my career, I had one person supervising me. There were a couple other experienced people in my division of the office who I could go to with questions, but there was one person who was clearly in charge. It would have made my life a lot tougher if I had three people of equal rank giving me different advice on how to do my job.

Never said anything about equal rank. Just that there were 3 people helping with qbs. And why do you assume each coach would be giving different advice? You are assuming a lot of things just to try and make a point.

"We are so dumb, we didn't even have a QB coach"
BV: "Actually we had 3 people working with the QBs"
"We are so dumb, we had too many people helping the QBs!"

most NFL teams have 3 or more coaches working with the QB's ..

most colleges have at least 2 ..

Actually, yes. The Yankees have three pitching coaches. Sam Briend, Matt Blake, and Desi Druschel. Director of pitching, Pitching Coach, and assistant pitching coach, but all are involved in coaching and training. It’s not like coaches are constantly looking over their shoulders to do their jobs from someone higher up.

I'm not assuming anything. Go to the team's own website and find me someone listed as "quarterback coach." There isn't one. So, instead, we have a variety of coaches/consultants who also have other responsibilities trying to help the quarterbacks.

Our quarterback play has been atrocious. Arguably the worst in the conference. How can anyone watch what is happening and not think that the way they are approaching the coaching of that position is completely flawed?

You keep changing what you are arguing about. Nobody is saying the way they are approaching it is fine.

Not changing a thing. My position is very clear: hire one person whose job is to coach quarterbacks and nothing else. Not three analysts/quality control guys who dabble in coaching quarterbacks alongside whatever else they are trying to do.

So you know those 3 are just dabbling? Kevin Johns was the QB coach at Duke, I'm sure he's doing more than just dabbling.

Well, if he is actually our quarterback coach, it’s another thing Brent is lying about, because he isn’t listed as such on the official website and Brent has never referred to him as our quarterback coach. Brent was the one who identified three people when asked who has been coaching our quarterbacks. If someone were to ask who our running back coach is, there is a specific answer. Same with offensive line, WR, etc. Seems pretty clear they are doing something differently at quarterback for whatever reason. Maybe it’s part of the SOUL mission. Or maybe we rotate quarterback coaches like we rotate captains. Either way, it is a mess and I’d guess that by January, we won’t have any scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.

Oh, it’s not on the official website! Oh my. Who is our special teams coach? Just because a guy isn’t listed on the official website doesn’t mean a whole lot anymore. Analysts do a lot of coaching now.

We didn’t have a special teams coach last year. Another great move.
