OT: Football Talk

I'm just surprised you guys are so quick to dismiss his production. If the offense we're running isn't conducive to his style, well, isn't a coach's job to tailor his scheme to the personnel? Can it get any worse? I'm not some Sawchuk fan boy, but I've seen the guy be a solid D-1 back.

In other news: I appreciate the civility of this thread. Usually football talk devolves pretty quickly, but there are plenty of informative and respectful takes flowing through here.

BV says Sawchuk strained his quad, which is why he didn't play.

What was the exact quote? I saw it paraphrased on Twitter but was confused because it indicated he was healthy going into the game, but got hurt Saturday? Did he even see the field Saturday? Was it a pregame injury?

From Bob P: Asked BV about #OU RB Gavin Sawchuk. Never been listed on an availability report (yet) but didn’t see any time Saturday.“Gavin Sawchuk strained his quad. That’s why he didn’t play Saturday.”

I don't know the context.

Only thing else to say is you're wrong, the kid is fast. He's got verified speed, now if you want to say he's not quick or elusive that's another thing.
I could be wrong. Maybe he is a slow accelerator and never gets to top end speed (or rarely). I just don't see it . He looks like he is always in mud

Thanks. Sometimes, the lack of follow-up questions by the beat guys is frustrating!

I think that's him trying to find a lane. He's got good vision and wants to hit a hole, but there just isn't any with this Line & TE play. That's my observations at least.

i agree .. he does not run through trash very well and he is not "quick" he needs holes and he is a 1 cut and go guy .. and toward the end of last season proved that he can be very very good doing so ..

Disagree. He doesn't have good vision. He can't make defenders miss. He can't break tackles. He doesn't have patience. He has no traits that exceptional backs have, except maybe speed. And speed just isn't enough at this level. I would kill for a back like Kennedy Brooks right now.

I think because there have been no running lanes, the few times he has gotten opportunities, he's now running timid. Last year he looked much more more explosive through the hole, but now he kinda gets the ball anticipating contact immediately, and that makes him pick his way tentative, and not explosive. Last year he proved he had adequate speed in several games. If there was a lane, he exploded through it. I 100% agree about his lack of vision, and inability to make people miss.

The mark of an elite back is the ability to make something out of nothing. We don't have RBs right now who can make something out of nothing. Tatum appears to have some of that in his tool bag, but we haven't seen enough of him to truly know. If Barnes is our best back, well........ all I can say about Barnes is runs like he thinks he's Earl Campbell or angry AD, but when he takes on LB's and physical DBs, he gets hammered every time. He has zero tackle breaking ability, and he NEVER makes anyone miss. I've never even seen him attempt to avoid contact. He seeks out defenders, and gets blown up most of the time....

Barnes running style is really odd. There was a field level view (prob from Eddie) where he is running g down the fumble or interception and he looks bow legged

If you disagree with me that just makes me more confident in my stance.

I don’t think there is any chance we make a bowl game. We will be massive dogs in every remaining conference game. Missouri and Ole Miss haven’t been as good as projected, but on the road, we will be big underdogs in both games. Alabama and LSU aren’t even worth discussing.

I won’t be surprised if both QBs leave. And many more players, for that matter. If we finish 5-7 with 6 losses in our final game, and go 1-7 in league, people will be jumping ship left and right, and I wouldn’t blame a single one of them.

Maybe. If our WRs get healthy, I expect us to get another SEC win. 6-6 isn't a high bar, but I still expect to get there. Our offense won't be lighting it up this season, but there really isn't an area that I don't see our offense improving in. Certainly can't regress. This team could look much different with a new playcaller and WRs that are actually capable of getting open. It's hard to win games when Jacob Jordan is your best WR.

In another sign of roster mismanagement, Walker had another big game today for Wisconsin. So glad we chased him off.

Meh. He's putting up decent numbers against the quality of teams he put up decent numbers against last year. He's okay, which we already knew, but let's not pretend he's all-world for averaging 5 YPC against teams like Northwestern, Purdue, and Rutgers. He had almost identical numbers last year and averaged 2.4 YPC against Alabama.

Kennedy Brooks would get tackled in the backfield the majority of plays. Patience is only helpful when your OL is blocking.

I just don’t see where we get another win. We aren’t winning in Baton Rouge and we aren’t beating Bama, even with them going through some issues. This Saturday seems extremely unlikely. I just don’t see how our offense could realistically be that improved. Same players who have done nothing all season, coaches who have been part of the mess are in charge, and they haven’t had enough time to really change the system even if they want to eventually do that.

Mizzou has been very underwhelming. I have a friend who is a Mizzou fan (good guy otherwise) and he complains how they keep dropping in the rankings even when they win, but it’s obviously because they have looked like crap in some wins against bad teams. If that continues, I guess that’s theoretically a game we could get if things go well and we stop turning it over a million times.

He would by far be our best option this year
