Post scoring

I'm hoping OU wins its first national championship. Only posted an opinion on what would take this team to the next level. This is a very good team, improving every week. Lattin is playing better than I thought he would, Spangler has more range than I thought. When AK played it was clear he wanted to post people up, I just don't see that with Lattin and Spangler. All I'm saying is, it would be nice to see a play called where the guards pass the ball down low and let the bigs take it. Maybe 2-3 more times a game. Because we can't expect our guards to always be on fire. Even though it appears buddy is the greatest shooter in OU history. Denver, is that really too much to ask?

No, all you're saying is that OU is a "pretender" and can go no further in the tournament than the Sweet 16. Look, you're probably a nice guy and even a good OU fan. But the reaction to your OP was to be expected – and exactly what you deserved.

The Sooners may fall even before the round of 16. It happens to some high seed almost every year. But if OU gets beat in the first or second round of the tournament, it won't be because we have no "back-to-the-basket" guy in the low post to save us when our outside shooting fails.

Is it that hard just to enjoy the season?

Chances are we will lose in the NCAA and it is guaranteed that it is because another team outscored us. It is the same for every other team in the country, but when you have the guard play that we do you don't take post shots "just because" as that would go against every advanced statistic out there. If you wanted to "worry" about something, I'd be more worried about rebounding in that scenario than counting on Lattin and Spangler not being Kareem or Hakeem.

We have a trip to LSU next. Let's see how we handles Ben Simmon.
Perry Ellis scored like what over 20 points against us. And he is only 6'8" more like 6'6''.

Simmons and Ellis are two of the best bigs OU will face this year. Basketball is a team sport. If we game plan to keep one player from scoring, we'll lose.

You and soonerjunky worry too much about how many points we're getting from the post this year. That's not to say, I wouldn't be thrilled if our post players scored more. Who wouldn't? But, given a choice between a post player who could score almost at will and the guards we've got this year, I would take our backcourt and not think twice about it. Truth be known, I'll bet LSU's coach feels the same way. College basketball is a guards game now, and it's been that way for the past decade or more.

It may surprise you to learn that the number of points being scored from the post positions this season (26) are eerily similar to what we scored last year (25.2) with TaShawn Thomas on our roster.

OU's offense runs through Ryan Spangler most of the time. But we don't depend on him to lead the team in scoring. This OU team is guard oriented, and rightly so. Nearly every team in the country would like to have guards who can score like Hield, Cousins and Woodard. Add Spangler's double-double average to the mix and you've got a potent offensive team without the presence of a dominant big you guys are wishing we had. If Lattin continues to improve, we may have one next year. For now, we'll just have to settle for a rim protector who is beginning to show a knack for scoring as well.

If you want to say we need more rebounding than we're getting now, I'm all ears!

In my opinion it is a simple little math problem.

Coachtalk, skyvue, and stormspencer; is this newbie still making a clown thread? Maybe I was right!

Yep. Buddy struggled for a half. And cat from KU had a career day. Still a top team.

How far do you think we go in the ncaa tourney?

Regardless of how far we go in the tourney, if/when we lose you'll claim the loss was because our bigs didn't score enough and Kruger can't develop low post players and Manyang didn't get enough PT. It could be in the final 4 and Buddy only scores 19 and Woodard goes 3-10. If Spangler only scores 8 and Lattin has 6, to you, we will have lost because of the lack of low post play.

Our best scorers are perimeter players. Accept that. We'll go as far as their offense takes us. The job of the bigs is to supplement our perimeter players. Deal with it.

I am disappointed that Lon can't get some improved plays. A screen and then go one on one. That is disappointingly easy to defend by a well coached athletic team.

As far as 3 point shooting will take them. If they get hot, they can't be beat. If not, could knocked out in the sweet 16

This is fair. For such a renowned X and O guy, I too am surprised at how much the ball gets "stuck" in our half court offense. I know it's an offense that is predicated on getting mismatches, etc, but OU's halfcourt offense seems incredibly easy to stop. Many times everyone just stands around and when they do screen they are weak. I hope if teams have adjusted to our offense then Lon can now make adjustments. OU can't get all their points on fast break.

I would concur that Lattin and Buford are improving and think that Spangler is more than holding his own. However there was a big drop off in the front courts performance from Lawrence to Norman. We scored 36 (1p every 1.53m) points in the paint in Lawrence, only 12 (1p every 3.33m) in Norman. Our bigs had 34 boards (1r every 1.62 minutes) in Lawrence and 14 (1r every 2.86m) in Norman. We did improve in second chance points especially when compared to the Hawks. However I attribute that to the guards out rebounding the front line by 5 board. Whereas in Lawrence the interior players out rebounded the guards by 13 boards.

Quite a turnaround for the big from Lawrence to Norman.

And damn we lost by 4 to an "avg" KU team? What a sucky loss!

That's my point, we were ice cold and got down 16 points and had plenty of chances to win at the end.

Which is what one the best coaches in ncaa history has built.

I want a prediction when do we lose?

NCAA tournament is a guards game. Senior heavy guards.

Of course they are critical but it takes more than that to get to the Final 4. We have the overall team to get there but need to keep improving.

Average team for the Jayhawks, perhaps. But the boys from Lawrence are 2-0 against my guys this year and it has been Self's M.O. for years to close the season strong by winning the tough games on the road. In other words when the going gets tough his teams get tougher (Kansas 5-0 the last 5) not so much for the Sooners (3-2) this year. We have been far from impressive the last three games. Now is the time for the Sooners to get on even keel and win out. For certain I do not want to open the B12 tournament playing ISU or Texas and that is where we are now. We need that #2 seed.

Sarcasm. KU is above avg.

Kansas is very average, we are the better team. ku will be gone after the first weekend. as usual.

OU Final 4

hard to overcome the refs when they help ku in big moments of games. the warning on cousins was bush league. stopped the roll we were on and we were about to go on a huge roll..

facts are facts....

OU

I didn't see a lot of facts there.

Unfortunately, I think KU is the better team.

The warning wasn't just on Cousins, but they warned Mason too. And it didn't stop our roll, it stopped a KU fast break with numbers.
