Post scoring

Love the way we are playing but have to say I'd like to see more variety to our scoring. We are great from distance but I wonder why that is not opening up more opportunities closer in. Seems like we should be able to spread any team out and take what they give us: the three, the mid-range or the drive. It's not that we haven't seen drives and jump shots but, with our guards, I thought the shot selection would be more evenly distributed than it is now. Love the little jumper Lattin is working on, Spangler can make that same shot and Buford is expanding his game so I'm hoping our game starts to round out more.

Newbie, thanks for the jab. Clearly OU has to get some post scoring. And I'm not talking about Spangler hitting 3s or Lattin hitting 15ft jump shots. I'm talking back to the basket post scoring. When OU gets beat in the sweet 16 because the shooters have a off game, I'll be here to remind you.

oh joy

Just enjoy this team!!! Might be another 20 years before we are this good again. We might have average bigs, BUT what team in the NATION has the 3 guards that we have?!?! What team can matchup with us on the outside?!?

I'm hoping OU wins its first national championship. Only posted an opinion on what would take this team to the next level. This is a very good team, improving every week. Lattin is playing better than I thought he would, Spangler has more range than I thought. When AK played it was clear he wanted to post people up, I just don't see that with Lattin and Spangler. All I'm saying is, it would be nice to see a play called where the guards pass the ball down low and let the bigs take it. Maybe 2-3 more times a game. Because we can't expect our guards to always be on fire. Even though it appears buddy is the greatest shooter in OU history. Denver, is that really too much to ask?

It's a great idea and literally nobody is against it, but it isn't how this team is constructed. If we are relying on Spangler and Lattin scoring off legitimate post moves, we already lost. Please stop with the NCAA boogie man argument, it is the weakest argument around.

When the other team plays almost exclusively zone we're going to shoot the three. We're just too good not too. Rebounding by Spangler and Lattin could have been better but even that improved in the second half.

No question. Had we lost the boards by 11 like we did in the first half we may not have won this game. No question Kruger told the big's to roll up their sleeve and get on the boards and they did.

I am more interested in rebounding than scoring. We need better rebounding.

For conference games the front line has been averaging 23.5 points and 20.6 boards. I expect that to remain pretty close to the status quo.

We have a trip to LSU next. Let's see how we handles Ben Simmon.
Perry Ellis scored like what over 20 points against us. And he is only 6'8" more like 6'6''.
Perry Ellis took 28 shots that night. If Simmons finishes with the same totals as he did, the guys will be returning to Norman with a double digit win unless somebody else totally unforeseen goes Jawun Evans on us. Simmons or no Simmons, LSU ain't KU.

NCAA tournament is a guards game. Senior heavy guards.

I hope not!! Maybe not next year, but possibly the year after. I heard a phrase one time that "sometimes you have to take a step back before you can take two forward". LK and staff have improved the team and roster every year so far. If this senior class plus Woodward leaves a legacy, I hope it's their work ethic. These guys have spent countless hours in the gym trying to get better. I can only dream it's contagious.

I wish for Christian James, AK, and Rashard Odomes to work as hard this off-season as Buddy, Isaiah, Ryan, and Jordan have done. They have been shown the blueprint how hard work pays off.

Couldn't agree more. OU is getting better talent every year, the question is will they work as hard as our leaders are now. Buford is improving. Seeing James and Odomes in at the end yesterday makes me shiver. I wonder if in some ways their confidence has been destroyed. But, it was only a tiny snippet and I felt sorry for those guys. We need to blow someone out really bad and get those guys in earlier. But anyway, those 3 have an absolutely HUGE opportunity next year. I hope they play together and work their tails off all offseason.

I'm one of the biggest OU fans around. I'm just saying clearly this team needs the ability to score in the post.

(leaving out the Roy Mercer comment so you will see the real question) The team has weaknesses yet they've played a very good schedule and are ranked #1. Since you also say OU is a pretender without inside scoring. Who are the 8 or 10 teams that are contenders not pretenders?

This year, it might be too much. We just aren't built that way. It takes a lot of nitpicking to find issues with this team but, as some Sooner fans must, there are things missing. Blowing them up into some huge issue is just silly. This is one of the 2-3 best teams in the country, a definite contender for a NC, and a really fun team to watch. The only pretenders are some of the fans who post on this message board.

Why? If that post player sinks 45% of those shots (which is a solid percentage because a forwards made percentage is increased by garbage points and fast breaks) your play results in 90 points in 100 attempts. If Hield shoots a three OU gets over 150 points in those 100 attempts. Same with Woodard. Every guy that shoots threes for OU produces more points on 109 attempts than your proposed play. Now if OU shot 30% from three, they should do what you say.

I've asked this joker twice earlier in the thread this exact same question and he refuses to answer it. It was a stupid@ss comment.

Lattin has developed a serviceable 10-15' jumper and I really like his form. Spangler plays high post and when he's healthy with no knee problems, he's pretty good at driving to the basket. Come tournament time, I expect he'll be back to form. Buford has looked excellent ever since conference play started. He may even have post moves we haven't seen yet.

AK is a big question mark. There' are a few things he needs to improve before he gets meaningful minutes. He's our only big with a hook shot.
