The team had a 2 hr. practice today. There isn't a lot to go on. But, I'll try to note some things that are different or new from last season.

They have picked up 3 new walk-ons and lost one. I didn't get the new ones names. There are 2 guards and a 6'8" forward. All 3 of them appear to be upgrades from the walkons from the previous 2 years. The big looked to be the best of the lot. None of them are likely to get any playing time to speak of. Steve N. has moved from walkon to the training staff. James was absent today but will be back in a few weeks.

Neither of the juco bigs will be in till the fall semester starts.

The 1st 30 minutes were drills. Then they went at it pretty good 5 on 5 for about an hour. There wasn't any 1st or 2nd team. Woodard, Cam, Bennett, Booker, and Hornbeak were the red team and Spangler, Buddy, Cole, Tyler, and Cousins were the whites. The reds probably got a little the best of it.

No one was outstanding and both groups were turning the ball over too much. As compared to the last time that I saw them, Bennett looked to have taken the biggest step forward. He was really doing a nice job. Spangler had a good practice also. Cam looked a little more relaxed and did seem to be doing well consistently. Buddy looked to have picked up a little weight and also looked like a good player today.

Hornbeak and Cousins looked like that they had grown up some. Woodard was just outstanding on the offensive end. As a ball handler and ball hawk one couldn't have asked for more from a early practice. He seem to be able to get into the lane at a much higher frequency than any recent point guard.

On the defensive end, well, Buddy and Cousins both were way to quick for him today. In his defense, Kruger had them all up in everyone's grill all the time. In high school he probably didn't have to play much defense against guys with the 1st step quickness that he will catch in college.

I was really impressed with Booker. Not that he was better than the other guards. But, because he just looks more ready to play than I thought he would be. He looked like a freshman that had some game. He was being defended pretty hard and still scored some.

I thought the kids looked pretty good.

I didn't expect them to get started this soon. Thanks Gary.

Thanks for the update.

Good to hear that Woodard is looking good offensively.

What an unexpected surprise! Thanks, and keep them coming Gary! How did the guards outside shooting look?

Booker hit a couple from outside. But, outside shots were hard to come by and they were all well defended. As I mentioned earlier, the emphasis was on the ball defense.

Shot making was not the high light today. The players that stood out some were the defenders, rebounders, and shot blockers. Woodard, Buddy, and Cousins did a good job of getting by their defender and getting some open jumpers.

I don't know how it will be going forward. But, today we had a new offensive look. Kruger set them up with 2 guards, 2 wings, and a post. Basically, four around one. The two juco bigs aren't here. But, Cam, Cole, and Tyler along with the walk on big were here. So, I don't know if that is the new look or if it was a lack of post players that had the offense going the way it was. The defense was the winner today. But, a new offensive look might have something to do with it.

I think this Europe trip is really going to help the team. It is very dissappointing the Juco guys didn't have their act together to participate and I say that for two reasons. Obviously, the selfish reason is because the team would be better if they had the experience but I also think it sucks for those kids. That is an amazing opportunity and they will miss it because they didn't study enough.

As memtioned before, a former college coach told me he expects Woodard to be a four starter.

Thank you for the report!

I am encouraged by the emphasis on defense.

I am also very encouraged by the potential of a four year starter at PG, although it would be spectacular if Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn could come in next year.

Thanks gary! Just one practice but sounds encouraging re Woodard and Booker.

Great stuff, Gary! Keep the practice reports coming.

This part made me smile:

Both squads were applying full court pressure all the time. Cousins and Woodard both did a really good job of getting the ball up court. But, the pressure sped up both offenses.

The NCAA rule change this year allows for 2 one hour practices or one 2 hour practice per week. Kruger has opted for the one 2 hour option. It is my understanding that there will be one practice this coming week and then the following week they will get into the 10 additional practices for the trip.

Thanks, Gary!

I was also pleased to read your positive remarks about Bennett. I think he could be the sleeper on this team. He has the size and the athleticism, and he darned sure passes the eye test from what I was able to see last fall.

I'm really not concerned about our backcourt. I believe our guards and wings will be better than good. The main questions I have centers around our bigs. If Bennett is better than expected, that could change in a hurry.
