Projected depth chart with current roster

Chief is right to keep everyone realistic in these guys. I want all schollies used on grad guys. But the maine kid's team went like 4-20.. there's something to be said about that in a sport that only plays 5 players at a time....

Hell prolly be a Carl Blair level player.. but sadly we need a carl blair for next year

Kendall Smith started pt for OSU last year after transferring from a bad Cal St. Northridge team. He averaged 16.7 pts/gm his last year at CSN and averaged 13.1 pts/gm last year for OSU. I'm pretty sure he proved time and time again last year he could play at a high level just fine.

He's not being realistic; he's being pessimistic. No one is building these guys up to a degree that we need to be "kept realistic." One more poster who's in a rush to proclaim the future of a player he knows almost nothing about (few of us do).

As for blaming Calixte for Maine's record, did OU's record this season (especially down the stretch) reflect the talent and potential of our PG? The NBA doesn't think so. No one's claiming Calixte is a superstar (which he'd have to be to have elevated a bad Maine team to the degree you're looking for), but we can darned well use a solid, reliable, hard-working, mature PG for this season, and he might well be the guy.

I've been watching the guys we are depending on since they got here. I watched the highlights of Kur and he's so much taller than everyone he's playing against. And no defense in the clips I watched by the other team. He will now be playing against guys who are as tall or taller and alot stronger than him. Look man, I'm a realist. I played ball and can tell you guys that will help or not. He's a project that might turn out ok but we can't depend on him next year. And I'm supposed to get excited about two guards transferring from Pacific and Maine. Just plan on a rough year next year.

I get what you’re saying, Chiefdaddy. But after watching every video I could find on Reynolds and Calixte, I think we may be pleasantly surprised.

Try to look at it this way. Shepherd was going to run our offense next season. Putting Maine’s record aside for the moment, will Calixte be just as good as the Shep we saw last season? I think he will be better. He appears to have good handles, sees the floor well and makes some impressive passes, plus he can score in a variety of ways. He’s replacing Jordan Shepherd, not Trae Young.

The same is true of Kam McGusty. Reynolds is not replacing the McGusty we saw as a freshman, the player with a promising future at OU. I see Reynolds as someone who does a lot of things well. He’ll add quality depth on our wing. If Kam had been willing to work hard in the off season, get his head on straight and come back next season, he might have been better than Reynolds. That’s not what we got from him last year, which is why I see our grad transfer as the best option.

Coach....let me see the finalized schedule and we can make a wager. I understand guys. I'm one of the biggest OU fans on here. Grew up watching Billyball and went to school with Sampson and the boys. I was friends with the Sampson boys back in college. Played pick up with them sometimes. I want us to be good but our recruiting has been trash. I was so excited when Trae announced last year that my wife was wondering what I was yelling about. I really thought bringing him in could push us over. The returning guys did not improve and it cost us a year with an All American PG. If you guys think Kur is better than Lattin, you really need to take off the crimson colored glasses. Basketball is a sport where a couple of guys can make a HUGE impact but we keep taking projects or guys that can't play in the Big 12. I hope I'm wrong about next year, but the minimum standard around here should be the NCAA tourney. And I don't see that happening next year.

That's kinda my point Ada. Shep shouldn't have even been here. He was headed to James Madison. He's not a high D1 PG. This staff seems to get blindsided all the time and then rushes out to get a body to fill a scholarship.

No argument from me on the rush to fill scholarships, ChiefDaddy. I have had more to say on that topic lately than in recent years. Some of it real head scratchers to be sure.

If you can overlook the fact that we’re in a position like the one you describe right now, I actually think the staff has done a fairly good job of targeting the best options available to fill current needs. That is, if we get Calixte. IMO, he’s the key to any success we have next season.

totally agree....the guys we are bringing in are stop gap measures. I've said before that I'm sure they are "better" than they were coming out of HS, just by playing college ball for 3 years...but they obviously weren't major D1 guys then.

I won't expect them to be major D1 guys now. Yes, maybe they are a bit better than Shep would have been..but again, Shep was never on the floor more than 5 min...so who knows IF he had played more would he be better?

As I stated before, I'm thinking 0'fer so I can be pleasantly surprised...lol

But yea kendall was good for osu. Still he's an exception not the rule. Im just being extremely cautious bc some on here are claiming calixte coming here will fix all seemingly. We don't know if he's strong-moore or kendall

The good news for me is that any success at all will exceed my expectations. Will still be watching, hoping, and cheering when I see the opportunity. Hope to make it to a few games next season. Tickets will not likely be a problem.

We have a stable of potentially decent bigs, hopefully Manek, Doolittle, Freeman, Muni, and Polla will improve if from nothing else playing and competing vs D1 level competition another year. At 6'9" with a 7'5" wingspan the bouncy newcomer Kur should bring energy, rebounding, and shot blocking.

Looking at their numbers Reynolds or Calixte appear to both be improving players who shoot well enough from the three and are talented enough all around players to start and play competitively in the B12.

The real question is if they bring team first attitudes and hustle? If so they will be a blessing and they will win enough games and be a team of fun to watch over-achievers.
If they bring selfishness and mediocre effort they will lose lots of games and we will all suffer through a brutal season.

Ada has a nice post regarding Reynolds on the Reynolds committed thread. From the sounds of it he may be the type of guard who is team oriented and will come in and compete hard and bring it every night.

Stats say otherwise.

I'm sure you feel the same way about OKC. Added PG and Melo and finished with 1 more win than last year. Clearly PG and Melo suck and didn't improve, right?

Honestly i dont think he has to come in and be all world for OU to be successful. In order for OU to be successful IMO is ALL of them have to he solid. They dont have to be great individually all the time. OU proved that doesnt work very well last year with one great player. OU needs to get back to having a team that 5-7 guys can hurt you any given night and average 10-13 pts per game per player. Have 5-6 guys be a threat not just 1-3. Move the ball better on offfense and play better team defense and they will be fine. I get Calixte played on a bad team overall but put him around overall better talent and see what you have before writing them all off. At least thats my plan ;)

I don’t see Calixte as a “fix all.” Just better than the guy he’s replacing. If he commits to OU this weekend because he wants to be here, I see that as a bonus.
