their favorite candidate, whoever that might be.

I've seen several posts that indicate that if we don't get their favorite candidate, it somehow Joe C's fault. OK. Assuming we don't hire your favorite candidate, how would you have done Joe's job better than him? What would you do to hire your 1st choice coach?. How do you guarantee that the coach who is your first choice has OU as his first choice as well?

Nothing is ever Joe C's fault. Joe's doesn't stink.

No, I never said that. But if you are going to criticize you should have a idea of how you would do the job better. Otherwise, it's just so much hot air.

And 'blank check' isn't a really a viable option for any school.

I'm not one who has said anything about Joe C being on the hot seat or anything, but I just respectfully and completely disagree with this philosophy. If I hire someone to install my cable, and they come over and do a bunch of stuff and leave, and then I turn on the television and I don't have cable, I don't think I have to just accept it because I don't know what I would have done differently.

It's his job to make a successful hire here, and if he fails to do so, it will be his responsibility, even if we mere fans don't know exactly what we would have done differently.

That's not the question. The question is how would people on this board do better.

Hiring a new coach is just like recruiting. You try to sell the candidate on the positives of your job and other people who want him to stay or go to a different job tell him the negatives about coming to Norman. Unfortunately, message board posters like to ignore or minimize the negatives. The uncertainty about the Tiny/Taliafero situation is the elephant in the corner of the room any time another coach considers us.

When Kelvin was here, people commented all the time that we could do better. They hoped he would go to another school so we could hire a different coach. I said then that hiring another coach as good as Kelvin would be difficult. People scoffed. They were sure we could easily hire someone better. Unfortunately, nothing that has happened in the past 5 years has changed my mind.

Of course that's the question. That's exactly my point. No one on this board would or could do better. Of course we couldn't. We would probably collapse after an hour of trying to do his job. But he's trained and highly compensated to make and execute the right decisions, particularly one as significant as hiring a men's basketball coach. If he fails to do so, there's no reason he shouldn't face criticism, even if we ourselves couldn't have done better. Joe C. says the position of head basketball coach at Oklahoma is a highly valued one. I agree with him.

No one is claiming to be able to do Joe C.'s job better than him. But, if he doesn't loosen the purse strings on this hire, then we know he doesn't take OU basketball seriously.

Joe should know what we want... and do his job accordingly... just like everyone should... you should all know what i want and when i want it... make it happen!!!!

Lots of assuming going on.
