Sawyer/Mizzou

I'm fine.

It's tough to really get angry after a game like that. Norfolk State had one of those days. They played a perfect game. Games like that are why everyone loves the NCAA tournament. It sucks to have it happen to your team, but there's really nothing you can do. That team on that day was the best team MU played all year.

It's not like MU played poorly. We shot 53% from the field. We hit 45% from three. We scored 84 points. We didn't turn the ball over, we were never in foul trouble. We were outrebounded by 12, but that had a lot to do with Norfolk State having a big guy MU simply didn't have the manpower to slow down. Every one of our players played well, with the exception of English, who was severely hampered by the injury from the Texas game in the Big 12 tournament.

Everyone knew going into the tournament that the thing with the biggest potential to hold MU back would be a bad match up. Norfolk State, of all the low seeds, was probably the worst match up for Mizzou. They had a damn good 6-10 center and a slew of athletic guys on the perimeter, and each of them played a hell of a game.

I've been pretty consistent on here in saying I don't put as much stock in the NCAA tournament as most do. I consider the final four a largely arbitrary accomplishment (especially when you're counting final fours from the days of an eight-team tournament), and unless you win the whole thing the results really don't matter. So this one game doesn't change a thing about how I view this past season or Mizzou's position for the future.

A year ago, MU had a coach walk out on us after publicly and repeatedly assuring fans and his players that he planned to retire at MU. We were publicly spurned by our apparent top choice to replace him after the media reported it was a done deal. We ended up with a coach who'd never posted a .500 conference record, and shortly after he was hired, news of a scandal broke. We had a top 40 player everyone thought was a Mizzou lock commit to Georgetown (and Porter put up 16/8 in their first round game). We had an all-conference player go down for the year with an ACL injury, and we had two players transfer. No one expected a season like this. I sure as hell didn't. But this team was one of the most enjoyable to follow for 34 games, as well as one of the most successful. One game doesn't change any of that.

July 1.

We still have one more Big 12 title to win before we go.

So have you scouted out a good Mississippi State board to post on come July 1?

Softball or baseball? I would guess softball because all my MU friends seem to think it's a foregone conclusion they will win softball, but they think it about every sport. Must be a Mizzou "thang"... :ez-roll:

Your MU friends sound like idiots, but they'd be perfectly justified if they expected MU to win a softball title considering MU won it last year and still has the best player in the country.

Well...they are MU fans.:woot

So, which championship are you expecting to win?

FYI, I've lived in Missouri for 8 years now and I've never met a Mizzou fan who didn't expect to win every game. I can remember before both Big 12 football championship games I had so many MU fans talking trash about how bad MU was going to win. They were smoked in both.

Interesting. MU fans have a tendency to expect getting kicked in the balls much more than they expect to win every game. I was actually talking on Wednesday to a guy from Dallas (but a USC grad/fan) who mentioned every MU fan he'd met was expecting the tournament to go poorly. That's typically been our history. Good things happen, but right before greatness comes something happens. Every time.

I don't know a single person who expected to win the second Big 12 title game against OU. In fact, I bought four tickets to that game, two more than I ended up needing, and couldn't give the other two away. No one was optimistic about that one (and the optimism surrounding 2007 was entirely justified; we were ranked #1 at the time, after all, and I still think the two teams were closer than the scores indicated that year).

As for this spring, clearly I'm talking softball. Our baseball team hasn't been the same since Scherzer/Crow/Gibson came through Columbia.

Gotta give sawyer some credit, he is here representing his school/team, even after a tough loss, and he knows his MU stuff. I have seen posters from other schools stand and talk trash for days, then they become invisible when they lose...

Sawyer always comes back no matter what the results.

yep, this is true.

LOL @ them getting beat by a team that lost to Coppin State. Enjoy the SEC with your peers.

Missouri fits right in

Yup that was funny. MU players wearing SEC shirts like white trash with money after the big 12 tourney. As normal white trash with money always goes broke so did MU against a auto qualifying nobody. Nice way to
show your arse.

MU was a 2 seed. :clap

Like I told you already in the other thread, I'd rather win 30 games and bow out in the first round than win 29 games in two years with no hope at any post-season games.

I understand the desire to trash good teams when your own is no good. I certainly enjoyed kansas losing to Buckness as a 3 seed while MU was in the NIT and losing to Bradley as a 4 while MU won 12 games. Maybe, if you're lucky, you'll someday get back to the point where you can simply enjoy your own team without having to try tearing down others to make yourself feel better.

OU won the same number of NCAA tournament games as Missouri the past two season clown. In addition we hired a final 4 caliber coach while Missouri's coach ran for a better job and they had to settle with a nobody.

LOL @ the insinuation that OU is somehow looking up to Missouri in basketball ... ever. You leave with a losing record to OU, Kansas, Kansas State, Texas, etc. Run along to the inbred conference with your peers.

If OU were number 1 this year and won the national championship, I'd still be peeing my pants excited that Mizzery lost to Norfolk State!!!

Sawyer, you're handling all this reasonably well, but the antagonism towards Mizzou isn't because they were good this season, it's because a) they're leaving the Big 12 after trying to ditch the conference for years, so how else would you expect Big 12 fans to react? and b) Mizzou is a seriously underachieving athletic program, but their fans behave as if they're elite. You can insist all you like that the tourney's overrated, but never, ever having been to a Final Four -- even in the era of an eight-team tourney? That's rough. As is getting smoked in what was probably the biggest football game in your school's history (glad to learn, though, that you take comfort from feeling that the two teams were more closely matched than the two double-digit OU wins that season would suggest).

Enjoy the SEC, but don't expect to be welcomed warmly here going forward. You're a fan, after all, of what it is viewed by many, and not unreasonably, as a traitorous and unjustifiably arrogant program.

Congratulations on your 0-0 NCAA tournament record over the past three years, boca. I'm sure it's a point of pride for all Oklahomans that you haven't lost any NCAA games in that span.

I'd also like to congratulate you on paying $2 million+ to a coach who went to one final four 18 years ago (6-8 tournament record since then). I'm sure that four-game stretch two decades ago (including wins over 14, 11, 2 and 9 seeds) is reassuring going forward. Final four number two is surely right around the corner for Kruger.

If we didn't lose a game for ten years I'd still enjoy MU's yearly fails and their fans pooping their pants and then still bashing big brother KU.

but their fans behave as if they're elite

Not counting Sawyer 'cuz he's a good guy but I never wish ill will on a team 'cuz I know the kids try so hard but there's never been a fanbase more deserving of a repeated kick in the crotch than MU fans. I've never seen more chest thumping and blowharding from someone that's never won chit. I won't miss trying to get out of Columbia alive after football games. And let me be the first to say that Sooner fans can be a handful too.

Don't make room for that softball trophy just yet. Ricketts and company have some new big bats and might have something to say about it.

Course I figured he was out buying one of these...
