I gave it a B-

With the relative short notice, Moser did the best he could as far as convincing transfers to commit. We weren't a powerhouse in basketball prior to him, so he probably had to do a lot of convincing. With what he had I suppose he could have done better, but I expected about a 20 win season, which he was 1 short of. I do like the look of all three incoming freshmen, and believe all of them could be stars for us if they stay all 4 years.
I think our biggest concern moving into next season is developing our big guys. Let's face it, Groves needs to hit the weight room! He's tall, but by no means a strong guy and he got pushed around A LOT. I thought the younger Groves might be more of a Brady Manek-type, but I was sorely mistaken. Perhaps he will have more confidence next season.
I expect both Gibson, Hill and Harkless to be pretty much the same, hopefully a bit better though. Mawein is still a big question for me - does he have the ability to step up and contribute more? I like Cortes & Noland and expect them to only get better, but I'm not quite sold on Mason and wouldn't be shocked if he transferred. Not sure who else will return and if we have any room at all, but if I were Moser I'd bust my rear end to pick up a productive big guy before next season, otherwise we may be looking at another long season ahead of us.

I will give Moser two more seasons before I make a final opinion on him. Give him a chance to weed out the previous administration's kids and bring in the type of guys he wants to do what he plans on doing, then if they still struggle/fail I'd say he's a failure as a coach. I thought we could only go upwards as a program after Kruger, but that appears to not be the case. I just hope we don't get worse and this season was the only 'rebuilding season' we had!

Interesting take that you thought we could only improve on a program that made the tournament 8 of the previous 9 years. In that regard, I read an interview with Fran last week when KSU was looking for a coach. At one point, he said that a good goal for that program is making the tourney once every two or three years. He went on to talk about how impressive it was that Kruger and Scott Drew led their programs to a string of constant tourney appearances. So I think it’s crazy to say that Moser needs to weed out Lon’s players, as if the previous staff had us in a bad position. But you’re certainly entitled to that opinion … it’s a message board, after all. 😊

I voted B-.

To be one win away - or so it appeared - from the NCAA Tournament was a solid accomplishment with a less than ideal roster.

Moser can clearly coach even if he can be too rigid in-game.

It will be interesting to see how we finish out the 2022 class. Moser doesn't have the built-in excuse of a short time frame or COVID issues to fall back on.

We need to significantly improve the roster with the 2-3 (whatever the number) of scholarships we have to play with. No excuses, the players are out there.

My biggest disappointment this season was that none of our younger players seemed to get better, or even earn time on the floor, as the season progressed. How does that bode for Oweh and Uzan or future prospects?

Well I believe I said that I was wrong in saying we could only get better, didn't I? It's obviously not the case - we could and did get worse! What I mean as far as weeding out Lon's players is that it's not fair to have a final opinion on a coach until they have the players they actually chose to run the team the way they want to run it - then if they still fail you can make a final opinion on if the coach was a success or a failure. That's how I'm going to make my final decision on Moser anyway. I went to OU and was a student athlete as well back when Sampson was the coach, so I know what type of program we had before he left, so I suppose I could simply be comparing Kruger's stint to what OU mbb was when I went to school there. I actually think Kruger was definitely a great hire at the time to replace Capel and rebuild what he and his players were dismantling. I remember we were pretty horrific those couple of years and were going downhill fast, so I suppose we could always look to those years and say it could always be worse!

C-

Unless grading on a curve, that includes facts like, whole new coaching staff, rebuilt roster, and extreme SOS... then B-
