Secret Scrimmage vs Tech

It's hard for me to keep up with OU. I can't imagine trying to do that with 300+ teams, even if that is your job. Pre-season polls shouldn't be a thing to take seriously anymore.
Exactly right. You’re not only having to evaluate talent, but how an entirely new roster will fit together.

Yeah, the variable that is impossible to measure is team chemistry. We've all seen teams (especially pro b-ball, baseball, etc) collect a lot of talent on the roster...but how will all these kids play together as a team? I look back to Capel's team with Willie Warren, Tiny and TMG. We had 3 McDonald's AA starting (we may never see that at OU again), and that team simply never meshed. If I recall, Willie had some injuries at some point, but that team did not have good chemistry..although from an individual talent perspective, there were some very talented individual players on that team (Pledger, Cade, Fitz, Crocker..in addition to the other 3).

I said a few months ago OU would be a Top 10 team. Was told to stop drinking…

Are you doing an end zone dance thinking that a scrimmage on Oct 9 somehow proves you right?
Honest question: what would change your attitude about OU basketball?

I don’t think you’re always wrong, but you’re nearly always negative.

How was that post negative about OU basketball? We could be the ‘96 Bulls and I’d think it’s ridiculous to base any predictions on a scrimmage on Oct. 9. My comment was directed at how silly I think the post was, not our team. It’s a scrimmage. A lot of times the teams don’t even play by traditional rules. They might have segments where they work on specific scenarios. They may allow unlimited fouls. Guys, like Jones, may not play when they would have played if it was a real game.

Am I mildly encouraged that we went toe to toe with a team that is expected to be really good? Sure. But drawing conclusions on these things is silly. That’s why I made the joke yesterday about Sam. He WAS our leading scorer in at least one of those last year, and the talk was about how his offensive game had expanded. Then the lights turned on, the popcorn stands opened, the fans showed up for the real games, and he couldn’t/didn’t make (or event attempt) a shot from outside five feet.

But to play along with your question, it’s the same answer I always give. Be competitive in our conference, rather than finishing near the bottom of a large league. Don’t collapse around the time people start taking down their Christmas decorations. And win an NCAA tournament game for the first time since the event was played in a Covid bubble, Lon was our coach, and Reaves was our best player.

I appreciate the response, and I agree with your expectations.

Our leading players from the scrimmage have more of a resume than Godwin ever did. You know that.

The question is, if we lost by 20…would we be saying it’s only a scrimmage?? Maybe, maybe not. I’ll take the “W”, knowing this team has some potential to be pretty good. Jadon Jones needs to get healthy. He should have a significant role if he can get on the court.

Wague also had 11 pts in this scrimmage…that’s 5 players in double figures. I’ll take it.

If we lose by 20 we probably don't care as much. Even a close loss we probably would be hyped though.

One thing about this team is we have probably a bit more that we know what we have. Wague really played good ball towards the end of last year and seems to have a higher ceiling inside than Godwin. Forsyth showed that he's capable of scoring against SEC competition. Scoring double digits vs Ole Miss, Auburn, and Vandy. Jadon Jones, Atok, and Nwankwo were practicing and have been around the program for a full year. We don't know where those guys are on the pecking order yet though.

Feels like Brown, Pack, Reid, and Davis have done a lot more against decent competition than the transfers we've gotten before.

Still have to see how it translates on the court. Competing well against a top Big 12 team is a good sign. But it's also early.

This team has alot of upside. Very excited but Coach has to develop and then retain core group. One great year and he could get us to next level with another really good recruiting year. Make or break year in my opinion.

At some point, you did inform us that each of them sucked and that Moser can't recruit.
How about we just enjoy that we’re moving in the right direction? I’m not making any final four reservations l, but I’m not sharpening my knives either.
