Sherri accused of racism

Facts prove you wrong. There is systemic racism in government law enforcement.

No doubt and it is terribly wrong and action needs to taken to better train the police to address black issues with less violence. But perhaps police officers wrongly look at Afro-Americans from a different perspective than they do whites because they know that the Afro-Americans comprise only about 12-13% of the population but are charged with about 50% of the murders, 54% of the robberies, 44% of the illegal weapon possession, 38% of the violent arsons and 34% of the aggravated assaults and are naturally very suspicious. A fact that is often totally forgotten by the media. However there is still no excuse for the unnecessarily violence taken in their apprehension. Better training and community interaction with the AAs appear to be the key.

It is a different perspective but perhaps more focus by AA leaders on getting AAs to clean up their act would also help mitigate how law enforcement interacts with AAs and should be emphasized to AA leaders in their community interactions with the police.

Not sure what naturally suspicious means. I'm as black as the night, but I don't do anything to be considered naturally suspicious.

Statistics are funny in that they can always be found to support a point. So many factors you didn't include in your post. You didn't address over policing in predominantly black areas. You didn't mention biased directives like stop and frisk, and disproportionate sentencing among black men and white men who commit the same crimes. Poverty and low educational opportunities have always been an issue in the black community, and it ushers in violence, addiction, and broken families. It amazes me how so many people can readily identify issues in the black community, but are unwilling to help.

With your naturally suspicious label, should I as a black man expect every white man over 35 to molest my child, or rape my wife? Should I expect every white kid who enters the school to be carrying a rifle, ready to shoot up the place? Should I expect every white business man to try and cheat me, or embezzle money from my account? Those are all crimes where white people commit them more than black people.

I know all to well the struggles and issues in the black community. America has never addressed the lack of trust and positive interaction between law enforcement and the black community. That lack of trust started during the civil rights era when blacks who were protesting and demanding appropriate treatment found themselves on the end of fire hoses, night sticks, and sometimes guns held by police officers. That lack of trust continues today, and not much has been done to fix it. I find it hard to believe we as a country can care enough to enter foreign countries and attempt to change their entire way of life to fit ours, yet we have been unable to stop the flow of S. American drugs into the inner cities in America, yet drug busts rarely go above the street dealer level. Pretty suspicious.

I agree 100% with everything you say and I am not saying a police officer should approach a young black male with suspicion however when they are 4 times more likely to have an criminal interaction with a black person than any other ethnicity it is only natural that some will be suspicious despite training to do otherwise.

Much needs to be done to educate law enforcement and the general population to overcome the racial problem. Unfortunately it is likely to take decades to totally rectify the problem. During the interim the black population in general and the entire police department are going to be falsely labeled by too many for the errors of a very of their peers.

Having been raised in rural S. Oklahoma and worked extensively in SE Oklahoma for many years I know that the teachings of the deep south toward racial bias is not going totally away anytime soon. But it is making advances with each generation through education. Sadly I death is the only resolution for many of these biased whites and their teachings.

I agree. I would add the black community is in desperate need of good, strong male role models. I'm talking fathers, clergy, and local leaders, not rappers and athletes. I'm glad so many people are working, listening, and lending their support. I wish the idiots who choose to loot, riot, and use the cause as a means of selfish action would go away. That is where strong leaders could make such a huge impact.....

Good points, however, let's be clear. ALL looting/rioting by idiots should not be assumed to be only African Americans.

I think it wouldn't hurt for whites to have the same...

I do agree with that, for the most part cops could pretty much do what they
wanted and answer to no one. I dunno some say that will change (maybe).
Cops will enforce feelings, polices over what the law says. Some of those videos
on youtube showing just how bad the corruption is with police and courts..can really make you mad.

I thought this was a basketball board. Guess I was wrong.

No you're right. However, one of the basketball coaches has done/said things that bring the topic of racism (systemic and otherwise) into the basketball forum.

Oh I know!!! I don't believe most would understand how much of the bad behavior is instigated by people who just want to tarnish what the real protesters are trying to do.

There was an instance in Portland (?) recently where the looters were arrested. The police said in the press conference that the people who had been arrested weren't BLM or in any way supportive of the protest. They just wanted to make the protesters look bad.

I think there are some athletes that are trying to use their influence in a positive way these days. I saw there the Thunder had set up a booth to register voters and players were working in the booth. Hopefully, they are learning that their vote can make a difference.

Thank you for being so respectful in these comments, folks. It is a sensitive topic for sure. Sometimes I skip comments because I'm trying to avoid the insensitive ones, but that wasn't a problem here. Cheers.
