Ortiz turns in another big game in Oklahoma’s 78-46 win at Colorado State

Gabbi Ortiz is giving Oklahoma women’s basketball coach Sherri Coale plenty to be thankful for this week. Ortiz continued a recent tear, scoring 18 points with six treys in OU’s 7846 demolition Tuesday at Colorado State.
The senior guard was 6 of 10 from behind the arc, one game after going 5 of 11 in a win over SMU.
Ortiz, who has shifted to an off-the-ball position after playing point guard most of her career, was a bright spot on a night OU’s otherwise prolific offense struggled early.
The Sooners were just 12 of 31 from the field in the first half and had a 31-19 lead at the break, their lowest first-half scoring total this season.
OU entered the game 11th nationally in scoring offense.
Things shifted in the second half and OU (3-1) shot 55.2 percent, as Maddie Manning (13 points), Shaina Pellington (12 points) and Ana Llanusa (11 points) joined Ortiz in double figures.
Ortiz hit two 3s during the Sooners’ 12-2 run
in the third quarter, which opened up a 43-21 lead.
OU’s defense turned in one of its best performances of the young season, limiting Colorado State (2-2) to just 30 percent shooting from the floor. Rams leading scorer Lore Devos had just three points, well below her 15-point average.
CSU made just 4 of 21 3-pointers. Defending the line had been a point of emphasis for OU after allowing DePaul to hit 19 treys last week.
The Sooners’ road trip continues Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the PK80 Invitational against No. 10 Oregon (4-1) in Eugene, Oregon. The Ducks already own an impressive win over then-No. 19 Texas A& M.
OU beat Oregon 10061 in 2012 in the teams’ only meeting. A victory this time could move the Sooners back into the Associated Press top-25 after they fell out this week.

At this point, the team statistics are far superior to what they have been in recent years. There are five who score in double figures: Vivi, Maddie, Gabbi, Shaina, and Ana. All of these, except for Ana, are shooting over forty percent. Vivi, Gabbi, and Maddie are a combined 49 of 59 from the free throw line. Gabbi has yet to miss. Vivi is averaging a double-double (17.3 and 10.0).
