Marquette doesn't have the dollars to compete and when did OU become poor?

I don't think either of those are the issue. To me it'll be about the returning players and the in-coming class. Not even close there, advantage Marquette.

what about it, we hired a mid major surprise coach and paid him 1/3 of what it'll likely take Buzz to seriously consider OU.

That was a good win for Marquette. You would think it would hurt OU's chances but no one knows.
Maybe Buzz likes a challenge. There are a lot of people that would take a job that is a challenge then one that is steady.
OU is going to be a challenge for any coach that takes over.

I'm just saying, until we see reason to think otherwise, what do you think is more likely to happen? Joe and Boren shell out nearly $2 million on a coach (on top of the $2 they're still paying Capel) or we hire another young, promising up-and-comer for closer to $1.25-$1.5?

There's nothing wrong with it. I think the head coach at UNT would be a decent fit.

There's nothing wrong with it. I think the head coach at UNT would be a decent fit.

I think the UNT coach would be okay. He has some experience at a higher level unlike our last coach. I would like to get a top major conference coach though. Winning at North Texas is a different animal from winning in the Big 12.

I agree, that's why I asked when was the last time OU was ever spendthrift on a bball coaching hire. I pray and really hope we open up the checkbook for Buzz but until I see it happen I won't believe it either, especially at the 2M+ it's going to take for him at this point.

I will be pissed if we pay an up and comer 1.25-1.5 because for someone like Jones it'll be severely overpaying. Probably going to be the same 700K mid major hire for whoever Joe C finds that fits the bill. And no I won't be happy nor do I think any OU fan.

That is a legitimate question but If Joe C wants to spend the money, OU's athletic department has it. If they give only $4 million instead of $5 million to the general scholarship fund from their surplus then so be it

$1 million will put more than 40 students through all 4 years of college...OU is still an institution of higher education. Not sure the regents would support a huge salary if it was contingent upon shrinking scholarship endowments from the athletic department.

The athletic department has no obligation to give any money to the general scholarship fund, it is a great luxury. If that means my wife and I give more money to our alma mater than so be it also

We shouldn't have to worry about losing the 2 million for Capel because went cheap his first few years with him and saved that much.

When judging what OU is willing to pay a new coach, we shouldn't be looking at what Tubbs/Kelvin/Crapel got their first year, it should be what they were making on average, or a couple of years in. I don't care what we hired Capel for, he was making about $1.5M within 2-3 years. THAT is more reflective of what we can pay, IMO.
