I remember when he transferred there was a bunch of debate on here about whether or not he was worthy of a scholarship. He definately was and has made a huge difference for the team.

If anyone doubted that Capel needed to be fired the fact that he didn't recruit him out of Bridge Creek was reason enough.

There were also a number of posters on this board who couldn't understand why Capel let Spangler get away in the first place.

I'm just glad that Ryan decided to overlook that mistake and give OU another chance. He was clearly head and shoulders better than any big we signed that year.

Yeah, not to mention the fact that he was the Gatorade Player of the Year as a senior, who averaged 29.2 points, 17.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. No wonder the coach passed on Spangler so he could sign Nick Thompson.

Why does it matter, Capel wasn't the coach here when Spangler was a freshman in college. Whether he offered/recruited him or not is irrelevant. He did bring in Cameron Clark and Romero Osby. But its about a player that he did not recruit for a team that he would not have coached.

The point is it's a talent mis-evaluation. The fact that Capel wasn't the coach here when Spangler was a freshman is what doesn't matter. Not offering such a talented kid right in your own backyard was down right stupid. Caple didn't know what he was doing. But, like someone else said, we can all be happy, now, that Ryan picked up Henson's phone call. Love what Ryan's doing. And hopefully Lon can get more local talent.

Nobody dislikes Jeff Capel as a coach more than I do. That said, I hate pinning the non-recruitment of Spangler on him. Outside of Gonzaga, there were A LOT of area schools that could have used him, but didn't offer him a scholarship. Not like he had offers from a lot of quality schools. He did not.

It also proves what a genius Mark Few really is. He picked Spangler out of small-town Oklahoma despite the fact that none of the hometown schools offered.

He offered Tyler Neal the year before and Tyler has been terrible the last 3 years.

And James Woodard is looking pretty good at Tulsa. How come Kruger didn't pursue him very hard or at all...he's right in his own backyard.

On Spangler, I "think" I heard at one time that most schools thought he would pick football over basketball.

Nick Thompson was terrible...right up there with Casey Arent.

...which makes it even worse. Seeing the baller he signed in Thompson(for those of you with dull sarcasm detectors, sarcasm) he didn't think Spangler was good enough for a scholarship after. :clap

A lot of coaches outsmart themselves in recruiting. They're all obviously pretty intelligent basketball minds or they wouldn't get to where they are. But all the intelligence in the world can't make up for a lack of common sense. Seems like the obvious, simple question of "Can he play basketball?" often doesn't get asked.

You are correct on the offers. Being from the Tuttle area, I followed his recruitment very close and Ryan had 30+ BB offers which about 15 of them where from very good BB schools. The ones listed on Rivals are the one he narrowed his choices down to the ones he was interested in, he also was recruited very heavy in FB.

I think there is a difference between being offered and having interest from colleges. I'm sure Spanglers mail box had letters from KU and so on.
