Texas Hires VCUs Shaka Smart

I'm apparently in the minority because I believe this was an excellent hire for Texas. Also, while I understand the obvious comparisons to Jeff Capel and Anthony Grant, Smart achieved far more than either of those guys did at VCU. 1) He got them to the Final Four, 2) He won 7 NCAA Tournament games, and 3) He went 5-3 as a LOWER seed in the Dance. I think #3 impresses me the most. Since the start of the Billy Tubbs era, we're 4-9 against higher (or equally) seeded teams.

I fail to see why people put so much into this one stat?

On selection Sunday we all sit here and question why X didn't get into the tournament, or how did X get seeded so high, or why did X get put in the toughest regional,...

But when our team loses to a lower seeded team, then it's all on the coach.

Makes no sense to me.

Sorry to derail the thread. Carry on.

No way. Playing shaka's system with their current crop of guards who can't handle the ball and beefy post players will be a nightmare.

I agree. They may get there, but it's going to take a transition.

Comparisons to Capel and Grant are based strictly on where they came from. It's pretty obvious that Smart's a better coach than both. And UT is certainly a better basketball program than Alabama. Arguing that he won't do well because Grant and Capel didn't do especially well is extremely facile.

Shaka Smart will probably have Texas rolling in a couple years. The Big 12 just got a lot more interesting.

I agree. I also think their is some bias in seeding that puts mid majors a bit lower than they should be. When a mid major gets a 9-13 seed there often isn't a lot of evidence how they will perform against a major conference team. Therefore, they win some games against weaker major conference teams that might have benefited from a slightly higher seed due to a bias towards the big conferences. In a picture sense, this bias is probably justified but on a case by case basis it is sometimes wrong.

Conversely, when a major conference teams gets a 9-12 seed, there is typically a lot of evidence that suggests the team deserves to be in the tournament but will likely lose a first round game.

I think Shaka Smart was a great hire for Texas. I also think the UT job has the potential to be a great job …… 2nd best in the Big 12 behind KU. It's within 200 miles of recruiting goldmines in DFW and Houston in addition to San Antonio and Austin. The HS talent in Houston alone is scary good.

Here's some quotes on the hiring of Smart:

JEFF GOODMAN ON SMART'S MOVE TO TEXAS
"Shaka Smart, first of all, works harder than Rick Barnes did, especially on the recruiting trail. He's got a hot name. Everybody knows who Shaka Smart is. ... He plays a style the kids really enjoy watching, up and down."

"He felt like Texas was a place that he could win a national title and have a chance to go to multiple Final Fours. There's so much talent in the state of Texas that he knows he can go there and lock down that state."

Shaka Smart already getting after it since taking the Texas job. Called and offered Vermont Academy guard Bruce Brown a scholarship.

Shaka Smart steered VCU to greater postseason success in his time there than the Longhorns achieved during that same period. In the past five seasons, VCU went 7-5 in the Big Dance while Texas was 2-4. As a lower seed, VCU went 5-3 as Texas was 0-3 since 2011.

Shaka Smart took VCU to new heights, winning more NCAA tournament games in six seasons than all other coaches in program history combined.

From Fran Fraschilla: If recruits stay on board, Shaka has at least a Top 15 team at Texas. Very happy for him. Great coach with great character. Seamless fit.

I agree about the Shaka Smart hire. He should do well in Austin.

Recruiting was never a problem for Barnes. He didn't always bring in the right mix of players at every position, and that was especially obvious with last year's team. Still, he had more than enough talent on paper to compete at a higher level in the Big 12. I have said for years that he was a great recruiter and no better than an average coach. UT's brass and their new AD finally realized that, too, so they cut him loose. IMO, sending Rick packing and hiring Smart was a good move both ways.

Feels more like Jeff Capel to me

listening to the national media talk about the upgrade in recruiting

fans excited about a home and home with Texas or 250K.

Texas just took the best available.
Really think some KU backers should have contributed to giving a couple extra dollars to Texas to get Greg Marshall out of Kansas.

Undoubtedly, KU has some backers with deep pockets, but they'd have to go some to dig deeper and pull out more moolah that this guy:

Charles Koch Ponied Up To Keep Gregg Marshall At Wichita State

Wichita State men’s basketball coach Gregg Marshall was a hot name after the Shockers handled second-seeded Kansas to make it into the Sweet Sixteen this year. But with a little help from a thing called “a lot of money,” Charles Koch and the rest of the school’s boosters were able to keep their in-demand coach.

Charles—who, along with his brother David, comprise the politically influential and obscenely rich duo in charge of Koch Industries—has financially backed Wichita State for years (the Shockers have played in Charles Koch Arena since 2003). Last December, the Kochs gifted $11.25 million to the school, with $4.5 million going to athletics. He and Marshall reportedly have a yearly meeting to discuss the “state of the program.” (To be clear, Koch is not Wichita State’s athletic director or university president.) So, of course, he played a hand in convincing Marshall not to take an enticing interview at Alabama. Marshall’s base salary stood at $1.85 million a year; Koch organized a group of boosters and raised that to about $3 million, according to the Wichita Eagle. The Shockers keep the best coach they’ve ever had, and he gets a top-10 salary. Everyone’s happy. Most importantly, Charles Koch is happy.

The Shockers are still considered a mid-major: they play in the Missouri Valley Conference, and their total athletics expenses of approximately $21 million pales in comparison to any school in any of the power conferences. For comparison, the athletics expenses of Northwestern, the smallest school in the Big Ten, are about $68 million. Wichita State works with a smaller budget. But whenever help’s needed, the world’s sixth-richest man can provide some support.

BS walks, but MONEY talks. Charles gets what Charles wants.

I doubt Shaka Smart recruits better than Rick Barnes. Although Smart had limited experience as a recruiter of big time players for a short stint at Florida I don't think of him as the national recruiter Barnes was.

Lamarcus Aldridge, PJ Tucker, Maurice Evans, Kevin Durant, Cory Joseph, Tristen Thompson, Daniel Gibson, Jordan Hamilton, Avery Bradley, DJ Augustine, Myles Turner, Cameron Ridley, TJ Ford, Chris Mihm - right there is the makings of a team that would win a lot of games in the NBA. Although he's a better bench coach. I don't see Shaka Smart having anywhere that much recruiting success.

I hope Shaka is successful at Texas. I am all for better basketball in the Big-12 conference. We would get to see better games and bigger wins at the LNC.

Agreed. I think people are forgetting some of the talent that has passed thru Austin over the last 10+ years.
