Texas Loses to WVU in OT

Re: West Virginia wins at Texas

I watched the game. It was beautiful. Texas might be a different team when Kabongo is eligible, but by that time it might be too late.

Ibeh and Ridley haven't come in as talented as they were supposed to be and J'Covan Brown leaving early is still hurting Texas as they lack that pure shooter. Also, Rick Barnes can't coach. His team has struggled with offense all season. UT has the ball down by 2 with 12 seconds left and Barnes chooses not to call a timeout.

UT isn't an effective offensive team and they're the youngest team in the conference. You need a timeout there to draw up a play.

Re: West Virginia wins at Texas

WVU went on a 13-0 run at the end of the game, only to have UT make a 3 to tie it and send it to overtime.

I want to share with you all: Link

In a nutshell, I go to an opposing fan's board and post highlights from their post-loss meltdowns. The latest entry is shaggybevo's game thread from their WVU OT loss. I did it for football season and am hoping to get some to give up on football angst by doing basketball ones too.

Enjoy :D

Texas lost at home to WVU? How is that possible? UT was picked to finish fourth in the Big 12 and WVU is supposed to be a bad team.

As I said after our game in Morgantown, we will look back on that W and feel very fortunate to get an important road win against what I believe is a decent WVU team. Anyone who has followed Bob Huggins over the years knows that his teams don't stay down too long, and they definitely don't play soft too often.

Good win for the Mountaineers! I'm always for any team that can go into Austin and come out with a W over that whiner Rick Barnes.

Anytime the Bevoids lose = :ez-roll: :ez-roll:

But, I never understood this notion that WV is bad. I finally caught up with some "reading" the other night and noticed that Basketball Times picked the Mountaineers second in the Big 12, behind KU.

Who gets forced out first: Mack Brown, or Rick Barnes?

Deloss Dodds is keeping his guys around. If Deloss goes, expect there to be a LOT of changes. Quickly.

Texas apparently values money over winning though, or they might have made changes by now

I think Barnes is a good coach.

He is a good coach, but he's definitely not an elite coach. Then again, the only elite hoops coach at a "football school" is Billy Donovan. I can't think of any elite football coaches at a "basketball school."

The problem with Barnes is that he once inked the likes of Kevint Durant, TJ Ford and Lamarcus Aldridge. The NBA is flooded with Longhorns. Suffice to say, the fans got a little spoiled. It can't be easy maintaining something like that at a "football school." Think about it. Billy Donovan won two titles last decade, and then started missing NCAA Tournaments shortly thereafter.

I agree that Barnes is a good but not elite coach. He's obviously a good recruiter. And, as you correctly pointed out, it's not easy to bring in elite reruits like Durant, Ford and Aldridge at a football school.

Barnes weakness, though, is that he is no better than an average coach when he doesn't have an elite player like those you named on his roster. Kelvin Sampson owned him until T. J. Ford came along. Kelvin deserves a lot of the credit for that. But he won with a lot less before Barnes found a way to bring in elite players that put UT on the map nationally.

Barnes may prove me wrong. But, if Kabongo is not good enough to raise the bar when he returns, UT will continue to struggle. The whorns blew an all-important chance to hold serve at home when they lost to WVU.

If you are factoring in recruiting, I'd call Barnes good. If we are talking about what he does with talent after it gets to Austin, I'd say he is pretty average. Seems like they consistently underachieve, given their talent levels.

Due to TV money (especially in relation to being in the best conferences via reallignment), I think all basketball schools are doing their best to become football schools. Hell, even Duke made a bowl game finally this past season. DUKE! FOOTBALL! wtf.

TJ Ford... ugggh. The Milwaukee Bucks were my childhood team till I married a San Antonio man and our fair state got the Thunder, so not I just casually follow them, but wow what a bust of a draft pick he was.

Maybe so, but T. J. was one heck of a college player. UT was average at best before he arrived on the scene. More importantly, perhaps, his presence on the roster attracted more high-profile players to UT, guys like Aldridge, Buckman, Tucker, Gibson and others I could name.

One of my worst days as a Sooner fan was T.J. ripping the hearts out of Hollis and the boys on Senior day. Still makes me sick to this day.

Surprised WVU beat the Horns in Austin. Starting to feel a little optimistic OU might get to 10 maybe 11 wins in conference.

Even though the Horns roster is mostly Texas natives, Barnes doesn't seem to recruit as well in-state as he should be. Most of the top talent has been going elsewhere(Baylor, OSU) the last few years.

Barnes used to win with D. he won the Big XII early with nobodies. coach them up. then he won with talent. then he won with recruiting. now, he's got NBA players who are stars and a program with holes.

i don't dislike Barnes. i don't think he's a bad coach. kelvin did own him badly, so that's that.

TJ Ford changed basketball at UT. they used to not care a lick, and then they were the greatest thing ever in their own mind. just like always. that's UT. Barnes did that for them. Ford was a great college player.

edit: all that said. Hooray Huggy

I'd say Thad Matta is pretty elite...he's got Ohio State rolling in basketball...it's possibly to have an elite coach at a football school, but it definitely takes a lot of work...

I'd agree that Barnes is a good coach, but not quite elite...
