Texas Tech

I thought Texas Tech had some good players.
While I didn't really expect Tech to win, I thought the Lady Raiders would put up more of a fight than they did.

Tech has been starting slow all season. Lethargic in the first quarter of many games. Recee Caldwell is a slow starter who starts hitting shots as the game goes on. When she starts hitting, she gains confidence, and it's contagious. So the other players start hitting their shots as well. Sometimes it's someone else who gets it rolling (like Arella Guirantes, who was on the bench wearing a boot) at first and then Recee, and then the others. I think the Sooners' smothering defense of Caldwell kept Tech from ever getting started.

Tech is usually pretty good at defending the three - especially for a team that plays zone almost exclusively. Today it seemed like y'all were raining them in from everywhere. Box score says you only made 6 threes, but it seemed like a lot more at the time.

And I bragged earlier about our 84% free throw shooting in conference. Only hit 36% today :facepalm
So congrats on your free-throw defense, lol. (Seriously, I think free throws are all about confidence. When other things are going well, we hit 'em. When we're missing everything else, we miss those too.)

Weather in Norman must have been bad. No crowd for OU/ Tech.
34-ish and wet, but no ice.

Nice facility. People seemed nice, from what little I interacted with them. Maybe I'll make it up there again sometime soon.

This was kind of a double blow for Tech. The men were expected to win and ran into Odomes' best game. The women might have caught OU, but the women seemed to be ready to play. Nobody shot well.

Glad you made the trip safely mgood.

I expected more of an offensive game, but both teams played better defense than offense I thought. I will admit I was not overly confident going into the game, so it was nice (for us) to come out on top. It will be interesting to see how much things change when the rematch is in Lubbock.

Isn't there a Community College in Snyder?

And Syb, it appeared to me the attendance was pretty normal for what we have been seeing this year.

The only game we have had that might have drawn fans occurred when the students were gone. I thought this might have ten thousand---at least five.

I would have been at both games if the weathermen hadn't given us such dire forecasts. I would love it if they scheduled more double-headers like this.

I wonder if Tech men and women didn't travel together? And if they didn't, why? Might be good for Big 12 look to schedule men's and women's team away at the same time so they could travel together and lower expenses.

I was at the game and while the official attendance (tickets sold) was 3,566 no way was there 2,000 in attendance probably closer to 1,500. So few on the east side that I contemplated counting them instead of estimating them.

The men's game had an official attendance of 8,601 but unlike the women's box score they also publish an estimated attendance (tickets scanned)for each home game which was 4,254 for the Tech game. Two or three years back they also published an estimated attendance for the women's games but it was discontinued.

I suspect Sherri did not want that low attendance number published in that a university concern would have discontinued publishing both estimated attendance numbers.

Yeah the program has really fallen attendance wise...I'm sure that doesn't help recruiting much. I would go to some home games if I lived closer. Good win Saturday and they played pretty good. But overall the quality of play the last few years just are not very good. Make some deep runs, knock off Baylor, win the Big 12 beat UConn and the attendance will take care of itself

Agree. I go to all home games. Have said they need to put curtains over the upper bowl like they do at Chesapeake Arena for the Big12 Tourament. It would look better on TV. There would still be many seats in the lower bowl. Attendance has taken a big dive the last few years.

I noticed that Iowa State does that. They leave the top section completely dark - so it is not as obvious that it is empty up there. They publish pretty high attendance figures, but if you noticed on the video of the game, the top was totally empty and the bottom bowl was not nearly full.

I expect OU keeps both levels open to allow for 2 different pricing levels - Reserved and General Admission. This works especially well when high school students attend the games - and quite a few do on occasion.

If you notice on TV, we have as many in attendance as the mighty whorns, who are the next hypocrite u, according to some. Attendance has dropped in almost all collegiate sports (with a few exceptions), including football. With almost every football game and men's and women's basketball televised and costs of tickets, more people than ever are staying home watching on TV. OU softball is kind of anomaly in that not near as many games are televised. Once almost all games are televised, attendance will drop or at best, remain stagnant. Collegiate football stadium expansions/renovations are now pretty much reductions/renovations. See OU, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, CU and many others.

Edit: Mighty whorn averages 3500 per home game this year (I'm sure tickets sold) and almighty Hypocrite U averages 5900 after averaging 6800 during Sims senior year, just about 3 years ago.

Easily fixed once they start charging for all sporting events on TV

Some suggest that the appearance of the Thunder has damaged college sports in the state. I expect it has had some impact, but just how much is an unknown. But something has hit college sports pretty hard all across the nation. And they tell me it has become easy to get Thunder tickets at reasonable prices. So who knows?

Yeah, they like to use Thunder as an excuse but I think it's minimal, at best. This decline is all across the nation and across a lot of different sports (with a few exceptions). I think there are multiple issues. Conference/school networks that show all the sports, costs rising (because of facility competition so schools have to continue to find new revenues to fund constant renovations/expansions) and with the explosion of smart phones, tablets, giant HD televisions screens give people other options than attending in person.

I think this is more generalized than sport. Newspaper readership has declined so much that we may not have a print version within ten years. Magazine readership is down. On one hand, TV viewership is down for major channels. But, there are now a hundred channels to choose from. We simply have too many choices.

When I went to highschool, the only available TV required at least a forty foot aerial that blew over with each windstorm. Even then, you only got one channel from OKC as a rule, and Amarillo interfered. The movie was open six days a week, but few went to the minor movies. As a result, every highschool event drew the entire town, whether they had kids or not. The highschool gym was usually full, and you had standing room only at tournament time. Even the highschool concerts and plays were sold out, usually for an afternoon and evening performance. There just wasn't anything else to do.

Now, you can watch one show, tape two others, and spend time on the internet on several different sites. The local community center gym serves as the home court for the highschool team and JC team, and both are free to members of the community center. The library is next door and has ten computers for kids who have no computer. There is so much that you can do that driving a hundred miles to see a basketball game isn't even on the mind.

You are absolutely correct. I had very low lower bowl season tickets for about 15 years and the cost this year was $250. This year did not renew my tickets and now purchase upper bowl general admission tickets and at the first timeout go down, which is permitted, and sit in my old season ticket location adjacent to the same friends I have sit with for years. Saves me about $150 per season. I could just as easily go to my old season ticket location before the game starts but instead wait for the first timeout to comply with the university ticket policy. Any fan in the upper bowl is allowed to move to the lower bowl but few do.

No question attendance to college athletic events is declining overall. There is much pressure on the entertainment dollar and where it is spent. OU is not immune to this pressure but there is also no question that consistently winning championships and beating your biggest rivals will also significantly increase attendance and this is something we have not been doing for the last 6-7 years. Failing to consistently win championships spurs a drop in attendance. The habit to always go to the game because of continued success is broken and extremely difficult to redevelop.

Just one old man's opinion, but a couple conference championships and make a Final Four in the next 5 years and you would see attendance double to 3-3,500 at the non-conference games and 4,500-5,500 at the conference games. Attendance similar to the Paris twins' era of 8,500-10,000 is probably not approachable.

Unfortunately winning 2 conference championships in the next 5 years would be a monumental task. But those expectations by fans were established when the Sooners won 6 conference championships from 2000-2009. And the fans are not going to be truly happy with anything less.

Start charging for minor sports viewing on TV and the viewing audience will be nil and hence soon not available on TV whatsoever excepting perhaps some championship games.
