The first softball game

Made 3 of the 4 games this weekend. Because of competition I do not know if you can really tell anything from two games against JC schools and two against NAIA schools. Kelsey Stevens definitely had better control (11 innings, 1BB) than anytime since 2014 She looked sharper and more confident. Might mitigate her KO's (15) somewhat because of the level of competition but she looked sharp.

Romero had the best swing of anyone on the team for the three games I saw. Knighton looked good but appears to be not close to Romero. Aviu did not look as good as Knighton with the bat but a quality hitter. Lundberg did not look good at bat. I thought Finney would pitch more innings (2) as some saw her making a contribution in the circle this year similar to Parker last year. I also expected to see he take some swings but she did not.

I am inclined to think that Patty's focus is on getting Kelsey back to her late 2014 level control wise then make the improvement you home to see for a senior. The question is Finney or Chestnut their reliever or are we scrambling.

This team hit only one HR in 25 innings against low level competition so I suspect their power numbers will be way down from 2015 maybe as many as 20-30 fewer big flys. But 85 HR's for the year would be good numbers. May hit for average similar to last year but we have a new hitting coach and he is going to factor into those results.

OU did have 8 stolen bases (5 runners) so they were running a little more but did not steal a base against St. Gregory's. Looks like Knighton will start at 2nd, Romero at SS and Aviu in LF.

Two biggest surprises to me were Reagan Rogers who swung the bat extremely well, stole a base and played LF and SS. Also Paris Townsend was doing a good job swinging the bat. Much, much better than a career .148 hitter. Macey Hatfield looked really good. Kelsey Arnold is again trying to develop as a left handed slap hitter like last year. Would guess that is a Patty's request because we need a couple of good slap hitter. Based on how she was making contact I would not be surprised to see her revert back to hitting exclusively from the right side like she did last year.

Still appears to be a question as to who will start at first base. Based on this weekend I do not think Patty is thinking about Lundberg playing their as was hoped when she signed. Townsend and Hatfield both took turns as the first sacker. Caleigh Clifton played both SS and 3rd. Wodach caught and played LF.

Four games does not make a trend so it is way too early to make any final judgement. We can probably have a better guess after we play North Texas on the 14th and close the fall season with two games against Arkansas October 31. Much better competition.

This report is almost identical to that of someone on SoonerTimes (JSULL) who also saw the last three games.

I do have some questions about some of these observations.

I thought that Arnold lacked sufficient speed to be a slap hitter. She is fast, and Patti used her as a speedster. But, I don't remember getting a lot of slap hits or stolen bases. I remember attempts, but not successes. Is she a step slower than what you need to be to be an effective slap hitter?

We weren't effective running against good catchers last year. I don't know that NAIA or JC catchers tell us a lot.

We had some problems early last year covering bunts, like against Georgia. We finally seemed to learn that Paige had problems getting off the mound on defense, and we used Arnold streaking to home plate to cover bunts that might have otherwise been covered by third or the pitcher.

We remember the one big HR that Bama hit. But, what set that up was our inability to get the #3 hitter out as she kept hitting singles and doubles against us on every at bat. That can be as devastating as a home run hitter.

Townsend has power. But, she really didn't look good last year against good pitching. I had hoped that Lundberg or Finney would emerge.

Self will probably be in left when she returns. Aviu? From what I saw of her in one of the tournament games, she is too good to sit. But, where do you put her?

Very good report! I agree that it is difficult to project the future of the team by the poor competition so far but it is interesting to read your analysis of individual players, especially the freshmen. We really need to have at least one (two preferably) quality pitcher besides Paige. It will be interesting to see who can step up and be that pitcher.

I know that Kelsey wasn't pitching against Alabama. But, last year, she could walk the bases loaded against a junior high team. The opposition didn't seem to matter. Even visiting her on the mound didn't do any good. The next two pitches would be at shoe-top level for ball three and ball four. She just couldn't seem to bring it up without throwing it over someone's head. The level of opposition really wasn't a factor. At least, she only had one walk this weekend.

Normally OU plays 15 games on the West Coast against top competition to start the season before returning to Norman. I suspect we should have a fairly good handle on this team upon by the first of March when we get back from the West Coast.

The advantage we should have in 2016 is the youth (8 freshmen) and inexperience (Townsend, Hatfield and Wodach) of many contributors should make for more exponential growth than the more mature teams of the last couple of years.

Tanks, Syb for the game recaps. Pleased to see Kelsey return to form - at least in this limited sample - and Romero will be a beast.

The next two Wednesday's (one week and two weeks from today), we will play North Central Texas College in Norman and North Texas State in Denton. North Central Texas College is a new one on me. It is in Gainesville.

Then, we wait until Oct 31, 31 days from today, for a double-header against Arkansas in Norman. That is all for the Fall schedule. We have four scattered games left.

I cant imagine Patty not wanting more games in the fall. New grass may have prevented scheduling some(really poor planning), but I dont understand not having more fall games.

I don't think you are allowed to play many Fall games. Eight may be it.
