Fred Hoiberg the new HC at Iowa State.

Got to be loving this if you're an ISU fan.

Does Hoiberg have any coaching experience anywhere?? I understand that he's been in basketball for years now but not as a coach.

I'm friends with a lot of ISU fans. Let's just say they're less than thrilled with this move.

What a great nickname. Was it b/c he got write in votes for mayor of Ames correct?

I don't think it's that complicated. He's from Ames. He played at ISU. Nicknamed "The Mayor" because of that.

Wow. Wouldn't this be kind of like us hiring Ryan Minor?

No.... Hoiberg has been the VP of basketball operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves and played pro basketball for 10 years.

I think this is a great move for Iowa State... I bet Hoiberg recruits really well with his NBA background and he will do a fine job coaching. His first couple of years will be rough but I think this is a pretty good move for ISU.

Incorrect, he did receive a write-in vote during the Ames election...that is where the nickname originates.

Laughing at ISU fans upset with this hire...WTH do they want? You have a legend coming back to coach a worthless program because he cares, your previous coach left you voluntarily for a Mo Valley school to make more money and he has NBA playing, coaching and management experience.

This.

I'd love to see Hoiberg hire Hornacek as an assistant coach. Then they'd have ties to the 2 most successful basketball tenures in their history (Orr and Floyd).

I think Hoiberg may be a great choice considering the circumstances they were in. He was always a very smart basketball player, kind of like a coach on the floor so I think he will do well if he can recruit to Ames. He doesn't need a bunch of 5 star athletes, but some good players who are willing to sacrifice for the team.

Well, I grew up a Hawkeye fan, so I guess I missed the "real" story on that nickname!

I could have sworn he had that name from day one, but I've been wrong before. Once.

This is a great hire by Iowa St. They are actually revelant and news worthy today. Hoiberg brings a big name that will recruit well. It's Iowa St...I don't think they could have done any better.

hoiberg isn't going to be able to recruit. you can't just walk into to recruiting without knowing anyone and hope to acomplish anything.

fortunately for isu, they don't need him to. either hoiberg or pollard was smart enough to retain otzelberger from mcdermott's staff. he's really good. he'll get hoiberg players, just like he did mcdermott.

Maybe we need to hire Otzelberger.

he makes more sense for a northern school, but, really, if ou could, they should. assuming ou still has someone on staff that recruits texas.

If you're an ISU fan you have to love this hire. Will bring in talent, and there's not much better the administration could have done, given that your coaches are leaving for Missouri Valley schools.

Even if it doesn't work out, whatever coach replaces him should have a good bit of talent on the roster.
