Anyone saying this is just giving into to defeat. We return 3 freakin' players that played last year on this roster. And one of them really played well. Fitz had his moments and so did Pledger but none of the returning guys are a point guard or a post player. This is not a good thing. We had one of the youngest teams in the Big 12 last year and we lose all but 3 guys that played. I know people here think I'm negative but this is just the way it is right now. I've never seen anything so bleak. This may be too tough a spot for any coach to turn around.

100% agree

But at this point I have no clue what to do...you get rid of capel you take a small chance of tj and cam wanting to go elsewere then we really would be terrible

Depends on if you're referring to the short term or long term success of this program.

Yes, these players leaving is not a good thing for the short term.

The long term is another matter

I don't think you can get rid of Capel right now. This is his grave to dig. And we can't get rid of him after a bad record next year because I don't know if any coach can win more than 15 games with the group we'll have unless we get Ross and Jones.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. We will be alright. May take a year but Capel will get this team cookin'.

So having players leave is a good thing? This is'nt like football when you have 85 players on schollies. You loose players, you just can't throw a walkon out on the court & try to compete.Anyway you slice it being one of the worst teams in college basketball 2 years in a row,is unexceptable..Go Sooners!!

I will agree with you that it is not like football however, IMO its easier to turn around a basketball program in 1-3 years then a Fball program. If, and this is a big if, you recruit well a basketball team can recover from a bad season fairly quickly. In football you need a lot more depth, whereas in Basketball you can play 7 and get away with it. ...Hopefully we have 7. :)

Unfortunately, I think this is a good thing. You don't leave the cancer in the body if you want to get well. We are just going to have to grin and bear it next year while OU recovers. However, in the long run, this is the best thing that could have happened to OU.

As for Capel, OU is in a Catch 22. They could fire him now with cause and not pay him because of NCAA violations but would lose TJ and Cam in the process leaving too few players to play. Then they would have to hire a coach to play with the walk ons. In contrast, they can try to recover with Coach Capel but they will lose their opportunity to fire him and will have to pay a big buyout since the contract goes to 2016. OU is obviously going to take the chance and hope he can recover.

I hate for talented young players make such a mess of things that they feel trying to make it in pro ball is the way to go after one year. I think Tiny and TMG are both making a mistake but both have painted themselves into a corner at the same time and this is probably their only option. Good luck to both of them and learn from you mistakes fellas, same for coach. Willie is a different story, at least he tried to come back and better his postion good luck to him as well.

^^^^This. It may be painful for a couple years, but the lessons learned will be invaluable in the future.

It is when the players you are loosing are not helping the team. the view of losing with burger boys is wayyyy worse than losing with players deemed less talented. one thing that i like from the football team is it's concept that goes along the lines of "hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard". It's not the exact quote but it's along those lines. that's what happened to OU this year, the talented didn't want to work hard and racked up a lot of losses.

I think now this takes longer than next year to turn around.
Unfortunately it could be 2-3 years or more before OU is back in the NCAA tournament because the rest of the Big 12 isn't going backwards.

Looking forward to hearing how bleak things are for the rest of the offseason...nothing like beating a dead horse.

Your right, let's instead talk about all the sunshine around the OU program.

1.) we signed Cam Clark, TJ Taylor and Tyler Neal.
2.) Cade Davis returns.
3.) Fitz and Pledger will be improved.

That's it. If that's all we have to talk about, this message board will die. We can sum up those 3 points in probably 3, maybe 4 threads.

I understand you have to remove players that are not good for your program, but that is what Capel has been the best at..I have lost track of all the busts of JC players & the players that have left for disciplinary reasons.Capels rosters are like a revolving door!!Go Sooners!!!!!!

4.) Assistant coach hire
5.) Future recruits
6.) Former players successes and failures
7.) Every school in the Big 12
8.) Can UNC bounce back?
9.) texas and osu and how they still suck
10.) Rick Barnes' future at ut
11.) The one and done rule and how it blows
12.) The NBA draft

Plenty of stuff we can talk about

True...but none of the ones you mentioned are "sunshine".

Question -- why is Capel taking so long to hire an assistant coach? Does anybody wonder if maybe Castiglione is actually hiring the assistant? Seems strange Capel was at the Final 4, which is usually when connections are made and yet nobody has been hired yet. I know Taliaferro was fired after the Final 4 was over, but surely Capel and others knew he was involved in the Tiny ordeal before then? Wouldn't you network anyway even if you didn't have a position to fill?

Because I'm guessing he is more worried about recruiting than hiring an assistant. Which is more important right now?

Maybe Capel is going after McClain and was waiting to see if he got the Colorado job. Or Mike Dunlap

We get it, BOB. You think Capel did a horrible job this season, and you're obviously not alone in those thoughts. But, continuing to beat a dead horse is not accomplishing anything worthwhile, and it's not going to change the fact that Jeff Capel will be OU's coach next season.

Find something else to talk about. PLEASE! I'm not happy with the state of the program right now, and I'm more than disappointed with the way things are shaping up in recruiting. But I'm also smart enough to know that continuing to bash our head coach is counterproductive to OU's recruiting efforts. You are, too. You're just so determined to prove how right you are about Capel that you can't see the forest for the trees.
