this hire is like that Eddie Murphy joke

in cool's defense: he's been around awhile, knows a lot about basketball, and has been pretty reasonable in the past. Capel's last two years seem to have soured him...let him vent.

I agree but it gets to a point where the crap is just annoying as hell....Sorry, that we didn't hire someone that he approved of....If he wants to be involved then he might want to think about taking over JC's job as AD...

He better hire a damn good recruiting staff
Think its a decent hire, but not sure it will put butts in the seats

Season tickets in Seats 9 and 10 in section 12 are available at United Spirit Arena in Lubbock. Please buy them! Take coolm with you!

stability and winning are not to be underestimated at this time for the program, imo. we've been in a free-fall for two years now.

not a scorching hire, but not too bad given we whiffed on our *public* #1. never a good spot to openly be hiring a non-first choice.

see, Missouri right now and the NU football search that ended up with Bill Callahan.

You don't have to be "not sure." It won't. Not immediately. Not on name or style alone. But when he starts winning, and wins year to year, the butts will return.

unfortunately you're wrong. I've seen many games coached by Kruger ... if for no other reason than the time at KState. He doesn't coach a bad game and he has had some really good guards (always liked Mitch Richmond), it's just a really safe hire.

If you wanna keep railing on me for saying it's a really safe hire (which you're gonna hear a million times) then rosin it up get it rollin'

Whats wrong with a safe hire?

Experience is something a program like OU needs. It got ran into the ground by a guy with limited experience. UNLV sucked until Kruger got there, and now they are good. He will do the same at OU.

Kruger is a great hire. He has left every program he's been at in better shape than he found it.

I agree with Cool M. For the (reported)money this a mediocre hire.

Perhaps it is a little much, but the main reason Joe C. was willing to spend that much was because of the reported TV deal in the works (or that's what I've been told).

I'm glad he was willing to splurge to get a very, very good coach rather than settle on the cheap for a coach not-as-qualified. It reinforces OU's commitment to succeed in basketball.

really shows how people have changed.

They were just overcome with grief for years over Kelvin's offense and supposed "lack of excitement" ... now Joe hires someone so milktoast and flanders that he makes Kelvin Sampson look like Steven Tyler and they're excited to be back to "safe" and "even-keeled".

Remember this ...if he does get this program back to where it was then keep yer fricking yaps shut this time and be happy for what you've got.

No you said "Mediocre hire" and gave it a grade of C+.

And I'll rail on you for that because it demonstrates that you have no ****ing clue what you are talking about, or you are just mad at the world.

That is the first thing you've said in a while that I can get behind.

If you are talking about how people were spoiled during the KS era, I completely agree.

What I don't agree with you about is how you are failing to give Joe C. credit for this hire. A "C+ hire"? LOL, come on.

I don't blame people for getting excited over a coach that has proven to turn around programs wherever he has been. Not to mention going to a Sweet 16 with three different programs, and an Elite 8 with two different programs. Those aren't easy tasks.

The guy is arguably the 2nd best coach in the Big 12. I don't know what else you can ask for.

I don't know if you are doing this as an April Fool's joke, or you truly are failing to realize that this is a great hire.

So, he's a "safe" hire.

On the "safe----------------------risky" scale, where would you rate the Capel hire?

if you're STARVING then anything tastes amazing...even this bland saltine cracker.

when you're thinking that the best you might come up with is Buzz...then maybe Pastner...then perhaps the Wichita State dude...or maybe Terry Evans...at that point OF COURSE Lon Kruger sounds like the second coming of Coach Wooden.

Honestly Kruger's a mediocre hire at best. No risk, no high ceiling. He adds nothing to recruiting and brings nothing dynamic to the job. He's tapioca instead of vanilla.

I worry how his style will thrive in the Big-12 without 3-4 year starters or upper tier recruits. We'll see...maybe a change of scenery revitalizes him.

Overall a C+ (plus because of experience)

If you're starving and somebody throw you a cracker, you gonna be like this, dang that's the best cracker I ever ate in my life! That ain't no regular cracker, was it? What was that, a Saltine? Golly, that was delicious! That wasn't no Saltine. That was... That was a Ritz. That wasn't a Ritz? Gosh, that was the best cracker I ever ate in my life!

1 year from now:

Hey, I just got some regular old crackers. :(

hehe.. pretty funny! FTR I'm for the Lon Kruger hire... I think he could be a great fit at OU. We shall see though.

I would say he's done quite enough of that over the last 2+ weeks.

Now is the time to get behind our new coach and start enjoying OU Basketball again.

I, like most on here, are pretty damn excited about this hire.

if Joe C was just trying to make sure OU didn't slide into the cesspool of college basketball mediocrity then it was probably a good hire. But what does it tell you when we hafta pay top-10 money to get a guy just to bring us back to the mendoza line? It means we're fighting a constant uphill battle and unless he adds something new that battle will continue ...

LK will do fine if he can recruit some good basketball skill players, have them for a few years, and let them control his team. He is NOT the guy who can recruit a slew of top-50 athetes and scheme them into winning games. By that same token he's also not the guy who is gonna walk in and take recruits away from Barnes or Self...so you can get that out of your head right now and we're already down to fighting for 2nd or 3rd place at best.

He'll do fine I am sure. Hopefully you guys will defend him just as boisterously when you figure out his ceiling is lower than Kelvins' and he wouldn't have done any better with this years team than Capel did.

Nah, I think what actually will happen is you'll be wrong and we'll be right. You've been backtracking since your first post and will continue to do so. If I'm wrong in two years, you can re-direct all your seething internet hate onto me.
