this hire is like that Eddie Murphy joke

I am pretty good at remembering who was beating a drum for Kelvin back then .... it was a small group and we hit the bunker often.

I didn't post much, but when I did it was usually in response to the avalanch of posts following a loss during the Sampson era.

if Joe C was just trying to make sure OU didn't slide into the cesspool of college basketball mediocrity then it was probably a good hire. But what does it tell you when we hafta pay top-10 money to get a guy just to bring us back to the mendoza line? It means we're fighting a constant uphill battle and unless he adds something new that battle will continue ...

LK will do fine if he can recruit some good basketball skill players, have them for a few years, and let them control his team. He is NOT the guy who can recruit a slew of top-50 athetes and scheme them into winning games. By that same token he's also not the guy who is gonna walk in and take recruits away from Barnes or Self...so you can get that out of your head right now and we're already down to fighting for 2nd or 3rd place at best.

He'll do fine I am sure. Hopefully you guys will defend him just as boisterously when you figure out his ceiling is lower than Kelvins' and he wouldn't have done any better with this years team than Capel did.

There are only about 5 coaches in the country that can do that. This is a safe hire in the good way. You hire someone you know will make us compete for Big 12 championships. What's not to like about that?

see, I don't believe that. I believe you can take these defensive coaches, recruit like that, and compete year-in and year-out...and as your program gains notoriety (and your recruiting accumen improves) you can slip into some better basketball skills and your ceiling gets higher and higher.

Here - unless they make some fabulous ass't hires these teams will likely win their 18-20 (often scheduled into) and will challenge well when LK's lead guys are juniors and/or seniors...and that's it.

Not sure how I can go on now though. I am so very heartbroken.
Hey, don't feel that way! Just continue doing your thing and I'll continue to have much less respect for what you have to say. No biggie!

POST AWAY BIG FELLA!!!

OH NO!

ZOMG!!!!!!!

It just gets me here. I can't give you any excuses for it - there are no excuses. I've been meaning to spend more time on the board recently, but I haven't been too well... things aren't going very well at home. The poor neighbor's son has been put away again, and poor old Mr Dalrymple who does my yard can hardly move his poor fingers, and then there's Gilberto's war wound - but they're good people, and they're kind people, and together we were beginning to get over this dark patch ... there was light at the end of the tunnel . .. now this . .. now this...DISGUSTING loss of respect...

Come on coolmesser...you are better than this.

You aren't happy with the hire, we get that. Lately, you haven't been happy about much, other than I think you were relieved to see Capel go bye-bye.

Kruger will do what we need him to do, which is clean up this mess and win games. With a little luck, who knows we may make another final 4 with him as the coach and then we have a chance to win it all. That's all you can ask for. At least he will make us an NCAA tourney yearly entrant and then we have the same chance as Butler and VCU did this year.

Now this is a ZINGER, I do not care who you are or what your thoughts are. That statement is going to be Televised as a "Instant Classic"

Probably more than 5 coaches..but its not a huge number more.

Regardless of that, OU wasn't going to hire a coach that CAN recruit a slew of top 50 players year in and year out. It just isn't going to happen at this point in time.

OU CAN hire a coach that knows how to run a program, in a clean way (/Stoops), knows how to coach players to play as a team, and is a good X's and O's guy.

LK fits that mold like a glove. He will have our players playing as a team above our talent level. He coaches synergy, getting 5 guys on the floor that are better than their individual skill levels.

I don't know who we could have hired that would be better.

sadly you don't even get the point.

I am glad, though, that you think LK is able to coach to all of your requisite trite sayings like:
"playing as a team"
"synergy"
"greater than the sum of their individual parts"

Because we all know how important those things are...just like the required pre-game Gipper speech and final shot from Jimmy Chitwood.

Maybe I dont get the point because you dont have one.

If Capel could have coached OU to those three "trite sayings" two years ago, do you think we still would have missed the tourney?

that MUST be it. if you didn't get it then there must not have been one. right?

do you have any clue where the basketball skills in the recruiting class are and where the athletes are? and what the difference is? and how this makes a difference as to a coach's style?

there's a lot you're missing here. MAYBE if you took the time to get a clue instead of just opening you piehole for soundchecks then you'd understand a little more of what's going on.

if you're STARVING then anything tastes amazing...even this bland saltine cracker.

when you're thinking that the best you might come up with is Buzz...then maybe Pastner...then perhaps the Wichita State dude...or maybe Terry Evans...at that point OF COURSE Lon Kruger sounds like the second coming of Coach Wooden.

Honestly Kruger's a mediocre hire at best. No risk, no high ceiling. He adds nothing to recruiting and brings nothing dynamic to the job. He's tapioca instead of vanilla.

I worry how his style will thrive in the Big-12 without 3-4 year starters or upper tier recruits. We'll see...maybe a change of scenery revitalizes him.

Overall a C+ (plus because of experience)

I believe you set the bar for success at Oklahoma as simply having a winning record each season and showing improvement throughout the year. Lon Kruger will accomplish that with ease, and there is no reason to believe otherwise. He has done it his entire career. He will exceed the expectations you have for Oklahoma basketball.
