Haven't seen them play much, but they've scored over 100 three times this season and in the 90's three other times. Oregon and Purdue beat them. They are similar to OU - with a guard and a SF leading the way and several role players who can go.

Should be an up-tempo game. Can't wait to see how we fare.

Fears and Moore must stay out of foul trouble and we need Miles, Elvis or Goodine to get double figures. They don't seem to rely on their C for offense, so that should help OU.

Thoughts?

Grant Nelson is 6-11, scores 13.2 ppg, and averages 8.6 boards in 27 minutes a game. He shoots a low percentage from 3, but attempts nearly three of them per game. Sam and Luke are at a major disadvantage. They also are a great rebounding team.

We need to hope they aren't making shots, or getting a bunch of their misses back. Also need to hope our defense can slow the game down, and guard much better than we have been. Getting something from Elvis would be nice because he has not done well in a lot of the games against good teams.

Grant Nelson shooting a low % seems like an advantage. Sag off and help after he misses a couple.

They rebound well. They don’t shoot it well. Gotta keep them off the glass some.

Our defense can prevent them from making shots, not just “hope” they miss. We’ll be playing defense.

Dribble contain is important to me. Gotta keep them in front so we aren’t playing help defense for 40 mins.

According to Kenpom, Bama is the #1 team in the country in 2-pt%. But they shoot the 3 poorly. They are an excellent offensive rebounding team, so that probably helps their 2-pt% on putbacks. They also defend both the two and the three well. Where Bama can be had is that their defense doesn't create TOs, so if we are smart with the ball, we can limit alot of transition opportunities. Bama gets to the line alot, but they also foul a good bit on defense too. If we can find ways to get to the line, we can hang around.

Nelson is good but I “think” we can kind of control him. That is, IF we can stop Sears from driving and dishing to him if we have to help. The problem with that is Sears can also shoot the 3 and they have Wrightsell who can also shoot it. I think containing Sears is the key.

Thanks for your input. Nice to read from someone who actually understands the game. Boomer

Maybe try some zone. Little harder to rebound out of the zone but I still think penetration is key. Have to contain them.

They are really good. Just thinking of ways to limit them.

OU under moser has been pretty terrible on the road. I’d like to see that change. This is gonna be a tough one.

Getting to the line would be great, we shoot a high percentage.

Love the zone though, but doubt we will do it much, not PM’s forte.

Can’t wait to watch

SEC preview of sorts from the Oklahoman

OU men's basketball prepared for SEC play thanks to 'mental toughness'

NORMAN — Porter Moser has said the same thing for three consecutive seasons heading into OU men's basketball's conference opener.

Here we go again. The Sooners are about to be put through the wringer in the toughest league in the country.

"You've got to take your schedule, put something over it and just slowly look at the one in front of you, and not be able to have your peripheral vision see the rest of it," Moser said Thursday. "Because it is, it's daunting. It's opportunity. We're going to be playing the best of the best."

That last paragraph is confusing -- his quote regarding the injured guys. Their legs are, or are not, yet ready for live action?
i listened to it live ..

the are running "live actions" as in set plays 3 on 3 1 set at a time 5 on 5 run the play take a shot and stop

but they are not running Live .. 5 on 5 scrimmages ..

the quotes don't come across very well ..

Thanks, figured there was missing context. Amazing none of the reporters provided that in their tweets.

Sounds like they are still quite a ways away from game action. After several months off, I'd guess it would take multiple weeks of full, unrestricted practice, including full court scrimmages, before someone would be ready to play a game. I think the "closer" talk is going to end up being similar to the season-long belief that some of the WRs were going to be back in action.

Yeahhh, they’re not in game shape. Which isn’t surprising at all. As a fan, I just hope they’re back by middle January or so. I really want to see this team at full potential.

And I can’t imagine either would get more than a few minutes for the first 3-4 games if/when they do return. It might be late February before any significant contribution if there is ever any at all. And, yes, we don’t need to see them hobble off after a few plays like we saw with Nic Anderson.

This is pretty much it & they’re going to launch 3s whether they’re hitting at a high clip or not (and even their low percentage guys are capable shooters if you’re just not going to guard them), & that contributes to both the 2p% and the offensive rebounding numbers because you’re stretched & recovering a lot if you’re not careful. Zone scares me because I don’t think we have the length to be super effective in it and they’re so good on the offensive glass.

They keep great spacing. We’re going to need to be as effective as possible at guarding two with two on ball screens and not overhelping because you end up with re-drives, fouls, & offensive boards from constantly being in recovery mode.

I’ve posted some of this somewhere previously and it may have been on the Scoop board, but Moser’s teams typically do a pretty good job with teams that play their style of pace & space — see Bama two years ago & BYU last year. Stylistically we’re usually pretty good at guarding the things they like to do but we’ll have to rebound better than we have to this point.

I think Glenn Taylor has to play a significant role on the defensive end tomorrow, and Jalon Moore’s intensity level needs a bump on that end with how he’s guarded the dribble some this year. He’s played consistently too high and allowed a lot of penetration but some of it I’d attribute to not being real excited about the matchup across from him. That excuse won’t be there vs Bama.
