Trae Young visiting today

This petty back and forth gibberish needs to stop. There are no winners when posters who are supposed to be friends get involved in a nonsensical debate about nothing that really matters in the overall scheme of things.

I'll give my two cents about prep schools for whatever it's worth. Maybe nothing. Some are good and some are not so good. But the prep schools that Trae is thought to have an interest in, Findlay Prep in Las Vegas and Monteverde Christian Academy in Orlando, Fla. have historically been ranked among the best high school basketball programs in the country for as long as I can remember. Personally, I can see why he might want to transfer. There should be no doubt that he will play with and against some of the best talent in the country if he transfers to one of those schools.

The downside, of course, is that Trae could be a small fish in a big pond with the kind of competition he'll face for playing time. He'll be the man at Norman North. Will he be there? I have no idea, but his chances at Findlay and Monteverde Christian won't be nearly as good as if he would stay home and play at NN this fall.

Agreed. Good post Ada. What chances do you see of Trae ending up out of state?

I don't have a clue, Jackson. I'm selfish enough to hope he stays home and finishes his high school career in Oklahoma. But I understand why he is at least thinking about transferring to a basketball power like Findlay Prep or Monteverde Christian Academy. He knows he's good, but he can't be sure about how good until he tests himself against the best the high school ranks has to offer.

Isn't it completely normal for elite players to switch to prep schools to play against/with elite players? Seems par for the course to me. If he's got a Duke & UK offer he should probably switch to a prep school where that type of talent resides.

Yes, anyone who says otherwise has an inherent bias. Kid should strive to play against the best if the opportunity arises, no different than kid who is given the chance to go to an extremely prestigious academic school because of his/her grades.

Idk if been talked about but guy called Al last night on the Animal and said his sources told him that Callipari is the one pushing Young to go to prep school.

Calipari is a douchebag. He is a cheater and he has been everywhere he has been.

If he is telling him to go elsewhere, you can bet he is trying to get him somewhere where it is easier to get his dirty claws into him.

I don't care, honestly, about the situation...I just know I am not fond of the prep school route...not because it doesn't get players playing against better comp, but because many of them are shady and I am not a fan of shady dealings anywhere....I was always a stickler for rules and feel like everyone else SHOULD follow them as well. I realize not everyone has morals and values though...so, to each his own.

I hate what AAU has done to high school basketball and hate what it has done to college basketball even worse.

But that is just one mans worthless opinion

The talent pool in American basketball has never been deeper, whether people like to admit it or not, it's due to the numerous opportunities young players have today over their parents and grandparents. It's a fact.

Everyone just needs to calm down. Trae is not going to OU, nothing negative about OU but more about the opportunity to play at the elite programs in the country. Trae and Michael Porter will attend the same school, Duke, Kansas, UCLA or Kentucky. He's a good kid with great opportunities ahead of him in basketball and life. My understanding on prep school was that he was told by a coach at one of the above mentioned schools that he doesn't need to go to prep school

Disagee 100%. Aau basketball has hurt today's game. Sure it helps some, but a good portion are just padding the pockets of coaches and tournament directors. Look at the transfer list, if I don't play, or I'm not the star... I'm switching teams. Parents have made the game worse, entitlement has taken over.

Too many gurus and "skill" coaches... Too much playing games and not enough real practice.

Think about this...

16 yr old plays aau. 40 min running clock... Say he plays 25 mins... Would it more beneficial or go get 500 shots up in :45 mins and 15 mins of ball handling.

Hours and hours of driving and hotel stays... Hundreds/thousands of dollars wasted.

Sure it's good to play games, but too many are played.

Lots of good points here.

Coach has hit a ton of key points here. No one has to take him as an "expert" if you don't want to, but check some of this out:

European players practice 9 hours for every game played. U.S. Players avg 41 minutes. And we wonder why their game is catching us?

Steve Kerr and Stan Van Gundy both are on record saying that American basketball has been severely and negatively impacted by AAU and its game first model.

Kobe Bryant and Charles Barkley have both stated that AAU has destroyed basketball.

NBA players like Jason Terry and Michael Beasley have often talked about how AAU is "fun" because you never practice or work on your game...it's just compete, compete, compete. No defense, and games are not close to anything complete in the total sense of the game. Kids today don't think they need to defend as a result.

All of this is just the tip of the iceberg...so many others such as Coach K, Tom Izzo, and Rick Pitino have denounced the current meat market that is AAU basketball, and the lack of skill that is being sacrificed.

AAU Basketball has hurt team basketball and kids by the fact that it kills ball movement and it burns kids out.

However, from an individual basketball standpoint, AAU basketball has created more players with more talent. The level of competition that Trae Young has played against this summer has done more for his game, than playing Edmond North or Westmoore two times a year. He has a chance to see live speed.

Go to an EYBL event and it's a whole different ball game. The PGs at these events would be playing center in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Iowa. The state of Oklahoma can never simulate that type of Senario for Trae Young.

Playing prep school ball is just glorified AAU ball. You take online classes, you're in the gym for 5 hours a day, and you play against bigtime size and speed. Allonzo Trier became a McDonald's All American based of of that approach. I believe that is what Young is trying to do.

The other side of the Young senario is that Nike plays a big factor in pushing kids to go to prep schools and also go to high profile universities. Young's playing ability is putting him in good standings with Nike.

It's not.

Take the 10 best Americans and the 10 best players from any country in the world, and we beat them. Probably by double digits.

Take the 60-70th best American players and the 60-70th best players from any country in the world, and we would probably double them up if not worse. It would be a shellacking.

We lost the Nike Global Games.....

Not true on any level. The u19 team barely beat Greece in the semis and would've lost to Croatia in the finals but their best player didn't play because of a shoe dispute. USA is still the best country but the HS players would lose to the world.

You see such a dramatic improvement throughout the year when kids go to college because they are actually practicing with great players, not glorified scrimmaging them. I like the idea of AAU to play better competition but most teams never practice together so it's five 1-on-1 games.

But since in oklahoma coaches aren't supposed to instruct during the summer I'd rather them play AAU than play video games.

I think all youth sports at the upper levels are out of control. The people making the decisions are the people that are making the money.

There is some momentum building to try and reverse the current trend. I hope someone gets a handle on the current youth sports landscape.

Trae gains nothing by playing Prep school. He is already McD's AA. Blake never played Prep School, Xavier Henry and neither did Daniel Orton.

Where is the momentum coming from? The only thing I can think of that would change things would be if most NBA players were from overseas or Team USA consistently lost in the Olympics.
