Will Travis Ford survive after this season? Despite a $7.2 million buyout, Berry Tramel doesn't believe he will.

Thoughts?

It makes no financial sense to fire Travis Ford. And it makes no competitive sense to fire Travis Ford.

But OSU fans have spoken. They want a different basketball coach. And fans are protesting so loudly with their absence at Gallagher-Iba Arena, athletic director Mike Holder is being left with very little choice.

No easy answers . . . . . . .

If some OSU benefactor came to Holder, willing to fund a Ford buyout, Holder should offer profuse thanks, praise the donor's loyalty and then ask him to take a stroll across the street. Go over to Reynolds Stadium and chat with Josh Holliday, talk about what $7.2 million could do to jumpstart the baseball stadium project.

There is not enough healthy respect for exactly how much money is $7.2 million. Especially in this day of major education cuts and $30 a barrel oil.

nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

;)

Oh, I would hate to see him go myself. He's the best thing that ever happened if you're an OU fan. But, anyone who saw OSU play Tech in GIA over the weekend would have to agree with Tramel. Holder may not have any choice. The empty orange seats were too obvious.

how can he say that with a straight face?

I thought the same thing.

I really don't care who they hire. Whoever it is won't be as good as LK, and I feel like OU has moved past OSU in terms of programs. Let em hire/fire whoever they want.

Good grief, do the aggies in that story's comments section overrate their basketball program.

One bright light actually wrote: "OSU basketball is not the kind of franchise that should be happy just to be in the dance. That is not our standard. It is the equivalent of OU football just being happy to be in a bowl. Sooner fans don't do that, and they shouldn't Neither should Cowboy fans. There is too much tradition and history to let that be the benchmark."

Two good coaches in their history, and one had his success more than a half-century ago, and then rested on his laurels for a dozen years. oswho basketball is not even in the same LEAGUE as OU football.

hes gone very soon.

Also Hiring doug would be a huge mistake. He will be no better than ford. has zero coaching exp.

Sad state of affairs in higher education where we could have a donor come forward to buy out a basketball coach for $7mm instead of using it for other realms.Especially in Oklahoma's current fiscal state.

We didn't move past them. They weren't ahead of us.

If they were smart, they'd do exactly what OU did. Go find a good, experienced, does it the right way coach, and rebuild their program. Not sure who would fit that description, but they are in a similar position to what OU was in before hiring Lon.

But I agree, hiring somebody like Doug would be a terrible move.

Here's to hoping Holder is dumb/desperate enough to hire Doug.

Really, not even in basketball. If not for the 1940's, there would be no discussion. I think media in OK felt sorry for pokes because of OU football and thus anointed (WRONGLY!) them as best basketball program. Such a delusional fan base!

He has a point financially speaking. He's way off base about a coaching change setting them back on the court. Assuming they can hire 1 of the many head coaches or several of the assistant coaches better suited for that job than Ford is, they might have 1 difficult season but they would be able to at least get the program turned. Assuming Evans and Forte don't return if Ford is gone is silly.

I don't believe this program has bottomed out. If they don't make a change, the chances are greater things get worse than improve.

Trammel is simply saying 'you gave him a ridiculous contract so now live with it'. You can't do that as an AD unless you just don't care about the sport. It'd be different if this was women's tennis or another very minor sport. This is what should be a revenue producing sport.

I agree except the timing isn't as good right now with oil prices in the dumps. In 2011 when OU made the move to can Capel and offer Kruger a lot of money the economy in OK was going great guns.

This just goes to show the danger of hiring a poor coach and giving him a lot of money for one good season. Luckily, we were able to get out of it and into a much better situation with Kruger. OSU may have to bite the bullet and let him finish out the contract. If they fire him, they may not be able to afford a proven coach so then they will be forced to hire another "up and comer".

In case everyone else hasn't noticed, up and comer's don't fare well in Stillwater. In fact, a proven coach is the only type of coach that can win there, see Eddie Sutton and also check all the coaches between Iba and him and then since Eddie. None have been successful except a year here or there.

OSU is in trouble. The decision to enlarge GIA was a huge mistake. It's always a much better situation to have too few tickets than too many. Something OU needs to consider if the LNC is remodeled or a new arena is planned.

If T Boone /holder couldn't afford to fire him 2 years ago when oil was over a hundred a barrel , they won't now when it's thirty a barrel.

Not to mention to state funding that has been cut this year . Boren said Oklahoma was operating on about 100 million less then what they did 7 years ago ....... With around 5,000 more students .

Boren is giving himself a pay cut right? You know revenue is down when even the boss is taking a hit in the wallet. As much as OSU fans want Ford gone, it doesn't seem realistic unless booster rally with money.
