Tramel: "OSU fans have spoken on Travis Ford"

This just goes to show the danger of hiring a poor coach and giving him a lot of money for one good season.

It's not even like Ford did much to earn the big contract. He was given the ten year deal after his first season when OSU went 23-12 (9-7 in conference), got an 8 seed, and bowed out of the second round. That's an OK season, but certainly not worth tying the program to a guy for a decade.

Sadly, I don't see any way Travis survives this season. On the bright side, it seems like they might seriously consider hiring Doug Gottlieb.

I am in favor of giving a guy a second chance; in Travis Ford's case, I say give him as many chances as he wants.

Wasn't that the same year they beat OU and BG in the Big 12 tourney in OKC? The year we went to the elite 8? I bet that win was the impetus for the big contract.

All my contacts in Stillwater/OSU tell me Pickens really likes Ford. Based on injuries, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get another year.

If T Boone /holder couldn't afford to fire him 2 years ago when oil was over a hundred a barrel , they won't now when it's thirty a barrel.

Not to mention to state funding that has been cut this year . Boren said Oklahoma was operating on about 100 million less then what they did 7 years ago ....... With around 5,000 more students .

I don't recall ever hearing they couldn't afford to fire him 2 years ago? From my sources, Pickens likes Ford which is why he will probably be given another year and maybe even able to complete his contract.

Boren is giving himself a pay cut right? You know revenue is down when even the boss is taking a hit in the wallet. As much as OSU fans want Ford gone, it doesn't seem realistic unless booster rally with money.

Boren took a $4k pay cut. He isnt hurting...!

I don't know why we would be upset for them firing Ford? He's the 3rd best coach in program history. They are much more likely to get someone significantly worse than significantly better.

Yep. OU swept them in the regular season. They beat OU by 1 in OKC.

That certainly helped, but more than anything, I think OSU was ready to quickly move on from the disappointing/scandalous end of the Eddie/Sean Sutton era. Ford was a hot young commodity (he'd had some success at Eastern Kentucky and UMASS) who was showing promise on the recruiting trail. But again, the problem was committing to him for a decade before he'd ever proven the ability to sustain success at a P5 level school.

It also helped Ford that Kentucky was looking for a new coach that year. Holder wanted to lock Ford up so UK couldn't offer him a better contract. Length was the only thing Holder could offer. Ford exceeded expectations that first year with Sutton's recruits. Recruiting was improving also. At the time, there were very few complaints about the contract. Who knew that just a few years later Ford would have 4 professional basketball players on 1 team (2 NBA, 1 NBDL, and 1 overseas league MVP) and not be able to win an NCAA game. Better yet, had to sneak into the tournament each year.

I'm sorry but Ford didn't exceed expectations when he took over for Sutton. That team he inherited had elite 8, final 4 potential and he ruined it. He inherited 3 5 star players. And add harris to that mix and you have an NBA player. He ran off his 2 bigs just like he does every year since he took over and he moved Obi to the 4 and the 5 and played Page at the 2.

The guy had Smart, Nash, Forte, Brown and Cobbins and he finished 8-10 in conference. He wants to play small ball just like he is doing this year. He has Hammonds and Burton playing the 4. He only has one post player out there right now at a time.

Holder has to get rid of him. Figure out how to get Marshall. If not him maybe Tommy Amaker. Gottlieb is not going to compete against guys who have coached their teams to final 4's with no coaching experience. They be better off hiring Terry Evans

I don't remember it this way at all. I think was considered outrageous by many and, at the very least, overboard by just about everyone in both yearly salary and, most especially, length.

Gregg Marshall isn't leaving Wichita St for Oklahoma State and Amaker isn't leaving Harvard for Stillwater. I guess T-Bone could throw so many millions at someone that it might happen, but I'm sure they both have their sights set higher than Okie St.

I seriously doubt that they get a big name unless it's someone who's struggled at a Power 5 school and is getting run out, Rick Barnes-style.

I agree with Tramel.... This is a horrible year, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. They have gone to 3 straight NCAA Tournaments.

Next year:

PG: Juwan Evans (All Big 12 caliber player)
SG: Phil Forte (All Big 12 caliber player)
SF: Jeff Carroll (Good shooter at 6'6'' averaging nearly 9 this year)
PF: Leyton Hammonds (Averages 10.5 and 5.2 this year)
C: Gorjok Gak (6'11'', 4-star recruit out of Florida)
-Had offers from Florida, UCONN, Missouri

Davon Dillard, a top 100 freak athlete, coming off suspension.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zMQQ7Wf2Ug

4 star Cameron McGriff coming in at 6'7''....

4 star Lindy Waters coming in...

Thomas Dziagwa, listed as one of the best 3pt shooters in Florida, coming in...

They have boatloads more firepower coming back next year, assuming Evans and Forte are good to go. Dillard could be a star, Waters and McGriff are VERY good recruits, Gak seems like a solid player for a Travis Ford style team....

On top of that, ok role players like Shine, Griffin, Solomon, etc are around. Solomon sucks, but he won't start next year. He will be a bench/role player to soak up minutes and fouls, assuming he doesn't get better.

No reason to fire Ford. If they stink next year, fire him. But, I'd bet on them being in the NCAA Tournament next year.

They have been under .500 in the big 12 for three straight years now. They are still aggies and Ford can not coach.

Everyone knows ( I guess but you ) that the reason Ford wasn't fired three years ago was his contract.
Pickens doesn't care about basketball , and holder isn't going to cost the school millions or make himself look bad by giving a ridiculous contact t a coach and then firing him

Boone makes all the calls on football and let's holder handle the rest .

It's too late for Holder. He already looks bad by giving Ford a tens years extension on his contract. Maybe he's the one who should be fired.

We didn't move past them. They weren't ahead of us.

It's truly a shame that anyone with OU ties has ever thought OSU had the better program. When I was in Albuquerque, a lot of our alumni group thought OSU had the series lead, and it's now at 40 games in OU's favor. But it's easy for those who don't keep up (or in one guy's case - an OU grad in the local ABQ media who hated Kelvin, with an agenda) to read on-line DOK and Tulsa Swirled stories and get the wrong idea.

For some reason you really like to exaggerate the talent Ford is bringing in. 2 of the 3 "4 star" recruits you mentioned are composite 3 star guys. Evans still has a long way to go before he's an "All Big 12 caliber" player, and Carroll and Hammonds average 9 and 10 because someone has to shoot the ball on their squad with Forte out and Evans missing extended time.

The sad thing is this myth was born in the mid 60's, when we caught and passed them for good during Iba's late slide into mediocrity.
