Tulsa

Interesting thought. He should be able to recruit. Will play the right style of ball, and should be able to coach-up the guards. TU has had a lot of success with youngish black head coaches.

As a TU fan/grad, I'd prefer they take a shot at some of the coaches that have HC experience at D1 schools, but I wouldn't hate Evans as a fall back.

Has Evans said anything? Seems like he was vocal about wanting OU to look at him.

I would like to see Terry Evans get a shot somewhere in D-1. It would be interesting to see how successful he could be at Tulsa. IMHO, Terry Evans should let the powers-that-be know that he is interested in the job.

Evans is 243-114 in 12 years at UCO, ranking first in winning percentage (.683) and second in wins in program history. He needs 19 wins to overtake Jim Seward (261-165 in 15 years) for the most wins in school history.

Terry has directed the Bronchos to seven national tournament appearances, including one Elite Eight and one Sweet 16. He also led the team to six Lone Star Conference North Division titles and two overall league crowns during Central's association with that league.

Evans has had seven 20-win seasons at UCO -- including a school-record 30-win campaign in 2010-11 -- and has coached 16 all-conference players and three All-Americans. He earned Lone Star Conference North Division Coach of the Year honors five times and was named South Central Regional Coach of the Year in 2007-08.

The best thing about Evans is that he might stick around longer than most, given his ties to the state.

I worry that with Tulsa with such an osu city, that TU might not hire a Sooner, for fear of losing out on some of the "secondary fans" that TU picks up from the aggies.

I would almost guarantee that the only job he would leave TU for would be for the OU job. So he might be that coach that sticks around for awhile.

TU better not be picky. One thing about Evans is that he knows Oklahoma HS ball and he has several Texas ties.

They should have plenty of options. We all like Evans around here, but TU can't afford another failed hiring. Manning finally got things back on track, they need another "good" hire. Evans might be. But he might not be also. I think there are some more proven names that TU might be able to attract, that would probably make more sense.

I don't think the fact that Evans played at OU would impact anything negatively. Heck, most of the younger generation probably don't even know who he is. He was always a respectable player and has been a highly respected coach in HS, AAU and at UCO. If they were willing to take a chance on Deputy Dog a few years ago, they should def be willing to give Evans a chance. I would love for him to get it, do very well and in a few years when Lonny decides to hang it up, Evans ends up in Norman until he retires!

I like Terry but I see Bob Hoffman as the best choice all things considered. Has won everywhere he's been, Oklahoma guy, and old enough to probably stay quite awhile if not retire there.

Last time TU played it safe to pick a guy who would stay it backfired. They need to hire the best coach period.

Agreed but I don't think hiring Hoffman would be 'playing it safe'. Dude can coach.

This would be a very good hire for Tulsa, in my opinion.

I think it would be just the opposite. There was a poll in the paper a while back that showed pretty clearly that the overwhelming majority of OU fans in Tulsa listed "TU as their second favorite school", and vice versa. In contrast very few OSU fans listed TU as another school they pulled for, and vice versa. There were some editorial comments as to why that may be. Many people think it is because OSU and TU were once bitter rivals who played yearly until TU started winning and OSU stopped playing them.

Whatever the case though, TU fans are FAR more aligned with OU than they are OSU.

Agreed. I was going to make the same recommendation. He would be a fantastic hire.

Evans has done pretty well at UCO, but his best year was with talent he didn't recruit. He had a good team this year that played the wheels off the eventual D-2 national champion Central Missouri but still lost. They were 20-10 this year but he hasn't had a season yet that makes bigger programs think he would be a great hire, IMO.

John Phillips was a HS coach moving up to D1. Hoffman is coaching successfully at a D1 school.

And I could argue Hoffman has a limited upside as well.

TU will land a coach with a higher (perceived) upside than Hoffman, I'd bet on it.

Should they hire Terry Evans?

I think it would be a great hire

Has Terry ever been an assistant on a D1 program? I would think if he wishes to be a head coach at a D1 school he would need some experience on D1 staff somewhere. I realize it's not a perfect indicator but I'd be concerned if we hired someone without D1 experience. And yes, I realize Sherri Coale was high school coach but it's very rare for it to be successful.

Terry was an Ast at OU. Director Of Basketball Operations but still an Ast coach

Guess I forgot that. That was with Kelvin, right? I lived out of state from 90 to 05 and although I kept up, the early years there wasn't much internet. Thanks!
