Updated Rankings for 2016

garyeb2,
Okay I'll bite.
How wide are the non basketball filters?? How many kids are they eliminating in your opinion?

I have no way of giving you a number. Nor can I give you a specific players name. I could probably come up with anecdotal evidence from things she or others have said or written. But, just off the top of my head, and as a starter,if a girl doesn't like team prayer meetings or piped in gospel music on bus trips, they might not like playing for OU.

Another would be in one of her white space and time pieces. She related that she was at an AAU to tourney to watch a girl. Then related the antics the girl went through during her free shot routine. From that, she could tell the girl wasn't for her.

The WNBA coach, whatever his name is, said in a recent broadcast the Sherri routinely passes on kids other programs are happy to take. I'm from around here. My friends and family are from around here. For the folks that are from around here, my point on this matter falls well within the realm of common knowledge.

Sherri has been around long enough. And she has done well enough to have earned the right to run the program how ever she wants to. She has earned the right to play tennis whenever she wants to.

But, she is still responsible for the results.

I think there is a filter, a sizeable one, but I don't know exactly what it consists of.

It could be religion. It could be the "attitude" of entitlement some kids have, it could be Sherri's personality vs. the players. It could be she's only looking for goody-2-shoes girls. Maybe she doesn't like tats. Perhaps she doesn't like vegans or doesn't want a kid who doesn't like the flower garden at her house or doesn't even remotely want to deal with a kid who is going to challenge her in anyway.

Only Sherri, the staff, recruits and players really know.

All I know is that I believe there is something something besides academics, Norman/Oklahoma, and program history that is preventing us from landing top 30 kids very often or even getting looks from most of them. Being in on a top 10 prospect is even more remote to the point that I don't even know if we go after those level of kids very hard.

Something isn't right with recruiting and we all know it.

We've all heard the stories about how the staff is high on players and want desperately to recruit the kid and Sherri just says no, or starts and then stops recruiting half way through the process. For NO reason.

Walker has been given as a perfect example of this.

There has been plenty of speculation that Hansmeyer's departure was because of this very issue.

We've read from Sherri's hand herself how she hates sitting in gyms and recruiting kids, particularly on the AAU circuit and at tournaments.

All that said, Sherri's been able to recruit some fantastic guards. The roster is stocked with solid propsects. Where she has failed miserably, the most, IMHO, is bigs.

I cannot explain that either.

As an old journalist, I would love to be able to sit down with Sherri and her staff and former players and just ask questions until I get answers or a fact-based analysis based upon answers or lack of them.

I think this entire issue is one of the most intruiging issuse ongoing at OU.

To be clear, Hansmeyer was replaced for recruiting reasons.

I didn't know that. It is interesting that her name was connected to the Paris twins as well as DRob, and yet she was let go because of recruiting. Best I can tell, her replacement was not an upgrade.

I agree that it was recruiting, Atlanta. That's what I was saying.

If you have insight to more specifics, I know I would love to read it.

The recruitment of the Paris twins and Drob only tangentially included Stacy H. The story I always heard was the Paris twins were good friends with Erika Arriaran from AAU ball. Sherri was personally recruiting Erika A very hard and Erika A suggested to the Paris twins that they should visit OU. They came on the visit and liked OU and decided on the trip to commit. On Drob it was Ashley that suggested her to the OU coaching staff and again it was my understanding it was Sherri that did most of the recruiting.

I am sure there were some recruits Stacy H was the primary recruiter but I can't name any.

Pam DeCosta who is the replacement was certainly the primary recruiter for Pierre-Louis and Penzo so as best as I can tell she is a solid recruiter.

Looking at the girls OU has gotten from Texas in the past few years, both Cox and Mulkey look like girls that would pick OU.

I think so too! I believe Brooke would also fit in great.

Sherri was being nice after Stacy left....and being the post coach she certainly was involved in their visit to Norman. But the word always was it was Sherri's recruitment of Erika A that was the key to getting the visit.

I was told that Hansmeyer was Erika A's primary recruiter. Erika originally liked Texas. Erika met and liked Hansmeyer and got interested in OU. The twins were talking about UCONN, Cal, and Texas. The three had talked about playing together in college. Erika gave the twins Hansmeyer's phone number. In the end, Erika decided to go back to her first choice, Texas, and the twins came to Norman.

I don't believe 10 ViVis and Penzos would add up to one Courtney and Ashley Paris, so no, I haven't seen anything yet that would indicate Pam was an upgrade.

What Cox is looking for in a School:
“A good coaching staff that has been coaching … And a winning history and just a good academic school and stuff like that,’’ Cox said.

I think OU offers what she's looking for.

OU is also close to her home. That should help. If we get Alexander in 2015, I believe that increases our chance to sign Cox in 2016. We would not have Peyton right now if not for Kornet. Relationships are not everything but they can't be completely discounted either. If we get Cox, I think that increases our chances of signing Mulkey as well. I hope we are showing up at the majority of their events and contacting them as often as the rules allow.

It will be interesting to see if any of those players attends camps at Texas.

Except for the academics part. OU is not that great of an undergrad school except in a couple of majors -- engineering and petroleum geology come to mind.

I agree that relationships might be key. As an earlier poster wrote, I hope we are at every game Dungee, Cox, Alexander et al. until they sign an LOI.

The staff can sleep when they're dead as far as I'm concerned. That's the way I was when I ran my own shop.

Is Alexander and Cox still on the same AAU team? I would like to see OU get Cox and big and Sabrina Ionescu from ca to go along with Dungee in 2016.

If that is true, Oliver, (and I'm certainly not willing to concede the point) how on earth does OU manage to convince all those Merit Scholars to come to OU? I believe this past year we enrolled the largest number of any public university. I don't recollect the number but there were enough of them that standing elbow to elbow they reached from one end zone to another. Surely, they're not all petroleum geology and engineering majors!

I read an article about her a couple of weeks ago. She is really good. She is very slender but apparently holds her own very well. I think she would also fit in great with our team.

I really like Calveion Landrum as well. She is a combo guard so she could move over to the point and add depth there. Being from Texas, I think our chances of signing her might be a bit better. Of course, she is from Waco and it might be hard to get her out of the shadows of Baylor.

I think our academics are good as well. The vast majority of basketball players never become rocket scientists. In fact, most never go on to obtain a masters much less a Harvard law degree. Some on here have said the reason players don't want to redshirt is because they want to get their degree and move on with their lives. If they would redshirt, it would give them an opportunity to obtain a masters at no cost to them. They just want a good education at a school that can win in their sport. OU can give them that. Patty doesn't have a problem convincing great softball players that OU is a good school.

The Merit Scholarship preponderance may not be the issue that OU likes it to be. First, the states have different standards based on the test, and Oklahoma has some of the lower standards. A lot of California kids would be eliminated with the same scores.

Secondly, the Merit Scholarship is a $2,500 award. That will go a long way to paying the tuition at OU. Tuition at a lot of schools on the east coast is around $30,000+, and a year usually costs in excess of $45,000. With the tuition rising, I'm not sure that the $2,500 even covers tuition at OU. What other accommodations does OU make to a Merit Scholar to attract them? It just isn't that cut and dried.

No I saw Alexander playing with United Elite-Black this weekend. That team has Erin Degrate 6-4 from Waco Lavega.
