Thoughts? I'm a little surprised at how the Big 12 stacks up here. Think we might be a little low and Iowa State might be a little high. Also surprised to not see West Virginia. I expect 5-6 Top 25 ranked Big 12 teams before conference play begins and the losses start tallying up.

Boomer, did you notice that 3 of our former Big 12 teams are ranked? We took a big hit in all sports by losing Nebraska, Texas A&M, Colorado and Mizzou.

That is true. Then again - Colorado's last loss... Kansas

And although TCU might be struggling, WV has proven to be a force to be reckoned with at least on the women's side. They didn't lose a lot from last year (Only Dunning who totaled 17 points in 3 games against us and probably spent more time on the bench in foul trouble) and seemed to gain a lot of height and a preseason first team selection (Bussie - First team in the Big-East and leading scorer her junior year) I'd say they are being a little underestimated. I think they will probably be one of the toughest opponents we will face all season.

I agree that WVU will likely be the opponent we should be the most concerned about. Baylor is right there too.

West Virginia only finished 17-14 last year including 9-10 in the Big 12. They did play well vs OU and I think that has skewed our opinion of them. They struggle shooting....last year they shot 38.2% overall, including 30.7% from BTA. They weren't great at the free throw line either at 64.7%. For them to become a top 2 or 3 Big 12 team they will have to have improved their shooting signnificantly.

Baylor is a mystery to me this year....we know Sims will make sure they are good but how good will depend on the other 4 players on the floor and none of them have played significant minutes yet. Those players will be highly recruited so there will be talent on the floor but they haven't proved they can play at a top level yet...hence Baylor's non-conference schedule to make sure they have success and gain confidence. I would not be surprised if Baylor won the Big 12 and I would not be surprised if they finished 6th.

Agreed on all points.

If they have their leading scorer from the year before back, then I'm sure that could raise their percentage. And I agree that Baylor is a bit of a mystery, but I wouldn't expect them to finish out of the Top 3-4.

I guess we'll see what the coaches think when the preseason poll comes out.

What I find interesting is Nebraska, Colorado and Mizzou were never ranked when they were a part of the Big 12 (except for that one year for Neb). The minute they left they are all ranked.

ASIDE to moderators: I tried to do "reply with quote" but it kept telling me I needed to log in. Is my account messed up?

Colorado is on the upswing with a new coach. She has been there 3 or 4 years. In fact, I think they beat us in their last year in the Big12-2-2+2.

Who all is tired of seeing UConn and Stanford at the top, raise your hands. Good to see little Marist is a ranked team - to start.

I don't think Stanford will be that good this year. Even if they do have Ogumike. They had a #1 seed in the dance last year and lost in the elite 8.

I wish we could giggle and point and say they're all worse off for having left the Big 12, but I have not seen anything that suggests that, except for that their outstanding teams might have gotten more conference/national title and poll love this/last season in football in the Big 12 than a bloated 14-team SEC and a rust belt leaning B1G.

I don't miss Colorado in anything. Apathetic fans, pathetic programs for the most part and no signs of improvement. The other 3? They would have at least made basketball season more fun, let alone football

I've been giving some thought to where I think OU should be ranked. With the number of returning starters, I think potentially we should be a top 10 team. We have some good players in Aaryn, Morgan, Sharane, Kornet, Maddie, and Kaylon and should be a tough matchup for the majority of teams we play. But, when you consider we lost by far our strongest rebounder, I could see us finishing in the 13-18 range. While Kaylon should be a good rebounder, I think our best chance of over-coming the loss of Joanna is by playing better team defense. Aaryn has said she is working hard at becoming a better defender. We know Sharane is a very good defender. We just need to see Morgan, Kornet, Maddie, etc step up defensively. I really have no problem with where we are ranked right now as, like most teams, we have some question marks so we could move up or down depending on how well things go.

Overall we have good firepower, maybe better than that. Defense and, especially rebounding, will take us where we want to go.
