For an explanation, look no further than this quote from the article:

Hightower has always been known to have a flair for the dramatic -- even when no drama exists.

Hightower's problem is that he thinks he's part of the show. He doesn't seem to realize that the kids who play the game should be the center of attention, not him. When officials call a game and no one remembers their names a day or two later, it's safe to assume that crew did a good job.

No one forgets an Ed Hightower called game. Enough said.

Great comment Ada, that's they way I always felt after a game, I was not there to be seen only to do a job and do the best I could. I have worked with Ed and in spite of the negative comments I always enjoyed working with him because I didn't need to worry about his area of responsibility.

Hows the family doing?

We're all fine, oketex. How are things out your way? Any plans to come through here this summer?

IMO, Hightower was not a bad official in his early years. It's just that his showboating style got really old after a while. He seemed to go out of his way to make a call so he could do this: :ed
