Weekly pokes thread

Don't look now, but Capel quietly doing a very good job at Pitt... Turned a program that was a complete steaming dumpster fire and had gone 0-18 with essentially every scholarship player transferring out before Capel arrived. Two years later, he has them middle of the pack in the ACC and will probably make the NIT, with 7 of their 8 rotation players (including their 5 leading scorers) all returning next year...

Agree.

I think he just needed to grow up in the coaching aspect. Good for him

I personally don't like the strategy of keeping a failed coach for one player who will be at your school for one year.... not a good long-term decision.

They had good hype preseason and early on, but the wheels have come off and they are going to finish last most likely.

You have all heard me talk about Kyle Keller from Stephen F. Austin... he belongs at OSU. They have a good chance to fire Boynton and bring in a real OSU guy.

He had a 28-7 season and they are 17-3 this year. They lost a ton of players after the 28 win season and had to rebuild, but they are having a great season this year including a win at Duke. And this is with one of their better players, TJ Holyfield, grad transferring to Texas Tech this year. He was an all-conference player, all conference defensive team selection, 1,000 point scorer, etc. They might be 19-1 or something like that this year if they had held on to Holyfield for his senior season.

Keller went to Oklahoma State, was a student assistant coach at OSU under Bill Self, then served 9 years as an assistant under Eddie Sutton.

Getting Keller just makes sense for an OSU program that is going down, and going down fast.

Why would you want osu to get better? I hope they suck forever

You lost me Wayman....I'm not sure how I showed any hatred toward Capel. It is true that Taylor was considering leaving OU had Sampson stayed and then he decided to stay when Capel came on board. That definitely helped Capel land Blake but it's a mute point if Sampson had stayed at OU.

My apologies, sdcloud. I didn’t quote the wrong post, I just mistook a consonant (K) for a vowel (O). Not sure how I could have done that, but I did. Yes, Blake was probably headed to Kansas if Kelvin was still the head coach.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Pokes played lights-out on Saturday. Still remember the night they almost beat OU and Wayman Tisdale in '85 in Norman, with a team that had no business being within 25 of OU at the LNC. But I'm hoping the recent Poke-choke tendency in the Big 12 lasts at least another week

I don't think Capel is a bad coach, and I've said on this board that I felt he could do well at Pitt. Just stating that one player can make a huge difference. OSU would be silly to fire Boynton if that means losing out on Cunningham (which I'm not entirely sure is the case, assuming that an asst that shares Cade's last name stays).

Basketball is a game where one player can turn you into a really good team. Look at OSU without Blake under Capel and with him. 2 years with Blake 53-18. 3 years without him 43-51 and technically 13 of those wins were vacated.

We'll see if Boynton and staff will make it to next year though.

Coach K went on a tirade in the game against Pitt where he is seen blowing his top, literally, as he was telling the fans to "shut up" as they were heard taunting Capel. He told the student section that "he's one of us." I mean he was beyond furious.

and then he apoligized in the post game he didn't know what they were saying

They apparently chant it to every former Duke player/Coach that opposes them. So, it wasn’t a bad thing.

Makes Coach K look old and out of touch. Weird scene if you watch it all.
