Why do you guys think we miss on so much in state talent?

1) sheldon williams
2) stevie clark -- assuming we miss on him
3) orton
.....ect......

You listed two kids who chose (arguably) two of the greatest basketball programs of all time over us. Everyone has a hard time against those schools. We can't write Clark off until he commits. Not to mention OU did land the two best in state talents in Tisdale and Griffin.

I will never get upset about losing a kid to programs like Duke/KU/UK/NC/Indiana/UCLA. How can you?

We actually do pretty well on recruiting in state kids that don't go to top programs.

I'll get upset over losing a kid to KU, but that's more because of how much I hate the Beakers.

I just wish our attendance were such that they'd take OU more seriously as a basketball program. Even when we were really good, it was if they never noticed.

To my understanding, OU screwed up with Clark when they chose Parker over him initially. Now they are missing out on Parker by recruiting Clark.

don't they play two different positions or am i missing something here? why would you not recruit a PG and a wing if you have multiple scholarships? I thought OU was recruiting both players but that Parker was just high on Memphis.

Sheldon IIRC was enamored with Duke early so that wasn't a surprise and would have been a very tough get. Orton, good riddance. Glad he went elsewhere. A kid who didn't go to class and had every intention on staying just 1 year.

Stevie Clark- who knows. I know he's a very good player but very undersized for a scoring PG.

As for some others there have been some things within the AAU in state working against OU. No matter, Kruger will get who he needs to build a winner. He's done it everywhere he's been.

Seems like we've been over this before.

I don't see how OU fans have any room to complain on this issue.

Practically every big-time in-state recruit over the past 30 years has either gone to OU or left the state for a big-time program like Duke, Kentucky, etc.

About the only "big time" in-state prospect that I can remember staying in-state and not going to OU was Chianti Roberts.

Obi muonelo was another one. The worst was missing of on udoh twice

I watched Udoh in high school. If someone would have told me he would be a lottery pick I would have saidthey were crazy.

The position they play has nothing to do with it. Think Willie Warren and Rotnei Clarke.

still think the biggest out of state recruiting miss ever in any sport is Mark Price to G Tech. Can't imagine how different OU history would have been having Tisdale and Price on the same team.

I don't pretend to be an expert on in-state recruiting, but were any of these guys from the Sooner State (I'm positive the first three were highly recruited) - Byron Houston, Richard Dumas, Desmond Mason, Bryant Reeves, Jon Starks?

I do know that two of the biggest years for talent in the Sooner State in my lifetime were 1982 and 2002. In both of those years, OU landed two of the top four (Tisdale, Bowie, Bookout, Alexander). The four they didn't land ended up at North Carolina (Hale), Georgia Tech (Price), Duke (Williams) and Kentucky(Azuibike). Three of those four no one could blame as they went to national powers. Mark Price was the only head-scratcher and he claims he never considered OU despite the fact his dad played there.

As for the 2002 class, Oklahoma State got shut out on all of those players. It hurt them so badly that they were in the Final Four during their sophomore years, so I'm not going to panic if OU loses out on the Stevie Clarks of the world.

OU had a legit shot at Azuibuke, but Bookout and Alexander didn't want to play with him, so OU stopped recruiting him. Would we have kept him from Kentucky? I don't know, but we had a good shot.

Mason isn't from Oklahoma. He's from Waxahatche, Texas.

Reeves wasn't a "big time" recruit... He was a project that turned into a superstar.

As for Dumas and Houston... I don't recall if they were considered big time recruits, or if they just turned out to be great players. I know John Starks wasn't considered a big time player.

I think Dumas was a pretty big time kid, too bad he couldn't stay the course at OSU, he was a tremendous talent.

Houston, I'm not sure that was a long time ago.

I met Dean Smith when he was recruting Tisdale (they signed Steve Hale from Jenks) out of that class. He said Tisdale was one of the best kids he had ever seen. He also told me that Price was very underrated and would be a tremendous player at Georgia Tech. Said he was sorry the kid was going to be in the ACC for them to play against. Smith was a super nice guy and engaging to visit.

Thanks for the clarification on Mason. He was still big-time, just not from in-state. Dumas and Houston were definitely big-time recruits (Sporting News Top 25). Billy Tubbs said during the early '90s that not pursuing Houston as feverishly as OSU was one of his biggest ever recruiting mistakes...if the guy was just a bit taller, he probably would have had a decent NBA career.

Starks was not highly recruited, if at all, coming out of high school. He didn't even go to college right out of HS, he worked at a grocery store then went to a couple of JUCO's before playing 1 year at OSU.

Yep. Reeves was a huge project coming out of Gans, OK. Just shows you what hard work can/will do.

Shea Seals was a player that I wished OU would have got as well.
