Is he holding out for the Gonzaga gig or something? I can't believe nobody has come around and offered this guy a big salary from a major conference.

Since 2002 at Utah State
2009-2010: 27-7
2008-2009: 30-5
2007-2008: 24-11
2006-2007: 23-12
2005-2006: 23-9
2004-2005: 24-8
2003-2004: 25-4
2002-2003: 24-9

I'm not sure I've ever heard his name even being mentioned for a big job. Makes you wonder why when you take a look at his record.

he's lds. getting up there in years. likes it there. makes decent money (600k or something like that).

not to say he would never leave, but he isn't chasing other jobs.

If you are making around 600K at Utah State, I'd reccomend staying there.

his teams need to quit letting me down in their conference finals. i blame wild bill's absence.

I ran into Tom O'Neill- an official who has reffed big12 games and did the Final game last year (UNC v Michigan St)- in the Tulsa airport on Saturday. O'Neill said that Utah State was his sleeper pick for the tourney. He also had a funny thing to say about Turgeon and Bryan Davis of A&M. I asked him what coach whined the most in the big12?

I was surprised that he said Turgeon. He said, "I call a foul on Davis and Turgeon is always calling me out asking me to explain the entire play to him. I'm like, 'which time?' I can call a foul on Bryan every single play if I wanted to."

I thought that was funny. He also said the big12 was far and away the best league this year and the most difficult to officiate- one large reason is that games at Kansas and OSU have difficult sight lines for refs because the fans are right on top of the court.

I asked him if the Big East or Big 10 was more physical than the Big12. His response, "Give me a break. Big 12 is the toughest league this year." We'll see how they do in the tourney.

You were surprised he said Turgeon? Why on earth would you be surprised?

I am not sure which ref called the double foul on a charge at an OU home game but I have never liked Tom O'Neil, I think he is too inconsistent.

Morrill had a couple of decent seasons at Colorado State in the early 1990's, but I think his teams generally underachieved. I think he left CSU on his own, but just one step ahead of the death squad.

If he wanted the BYU job he could've had it. Stew is LDS, very happy in Logan (the Cache Valley in Utah is truly one of the most beautiful places on Earth) and probably on the back end of his career. Before BYU become a (relative) power in football Utah was actually a basketball state. Up in Aggie-land, they are still obsessed with hoops. He gets fantastic crowds, a very good salary, and the people treat him like a king. Maybe you could've pulled him away 8 years ago, but at this point he's dug in like a tick.

I thought he would say Self, Ford or Barnes over Turgeon. Guess I haven't noticed excessive whining from Mark. He did mention Capel, Drew, Martin, Knight and Bzedelik as coaches that he liked and thought were fair with the refs.

He didn't say anything bad about the other big 12 coaches, but certainly wasn't chomping at the bit to praise them.

I have always liked O'Neill and Welmer as refs. Higgins is the only one I have a problem with. I can't believe that guy keeps getting the bigger games. His home court foul count is like +12 for Mizzou and +9 for UT. That is ridiculous favoritism. Most refs are in the + 4 range for home court.

Ah, Utah State. One of my fondest NCAA memories.

2003, and the Aggies come to OKC to play Kansas in the 2-15 game. It's the nightcap, and the place is packed. KU keeps USU at arm's length for most of the game, but after the 10:00 mark of the second half the Aggies begin to claw back.

USU does a peculiar arm motion to their fight song. They move their arms like they're doing jabs, only they do it vertically. Right arm up, then right arm down while the left arm goes up, and so on and so forth. Seeing as how I'd cheer for the Soviets before I'd cheer for KU, I observe this little shimmy for the first half and begin to partake right along with them in the second half.

After the 10:00 mark USU really starts to give KU the business and the game becomes REALLY close. More and more people are starting to do this arm shimmy along with the Aggie faithful. All the while USU draws closer and closer, so close that it's 64-61 KU with a few seconds to go and USU has the ball with a timeout on the floor. By now I'm doing the arm shimmy so furiously I'm beginning to get lightheaded, but I look around and everyone not wearing a blue sweater and white turtleneck is doing the arm motion. Every non-beaker in the house, whether they're in crimson, orange, maroon or Memphis blue is going ape for the Aggies. It was hilarious to see.

Utah State missed a trey at the buzzer, but I'll never forget that night. I was there for the Rhode Island slaying of Paul Pierce and the Bucknell bonanza that ended the careers of Miles, Langford and Simien, but I'll NEVER forget doing that little arms shimmy with the mighty Aggies of Utah State.
