2020 Recruiting

I think Harmon playing at OU may not be a positive thing since they play the same position.

Thompson could play 1 through 3. I don't think just Harmon being on the roster is a concern. Now you could make the argument that Having a solid group of Harmon, JB, Reaves and Hill could play a factor. But I don't think it will. If he doesn't come to OU I believe it's just because the allure of the Blue Bloods was just too much.

Maybe so, but I doubt if the blue bloods on Bryce’s list will wipe their roster clean of players who can play the point to make room for him. They always seem to have a back up to the back up plan. Besides, he and De’Vion can swing to the two if need be, just as I think we’ll see Harmon and JB do next season.

The bluebloods will have one and dones at that position. I think OU sees Thompson as a 2

You think a soon to be 5 star is afraid of a little roster competition ?

Come on boys. He’ll start anywhere in country day 1, minus a monster class from duke, unc etc.

Do we know if the official went well for BT and his fam? Staff needs to put every effort into this instate kid. It’s rare that we have this high of chance with a potential 5-star

They are putting in every effort. When he chooses someone else, it won’t be because OU didn’t put in the effort. It will be because OU is a second rate basketball school, not on the same level as the blue bloods.

Yeah, there's not a chance he could pick OU. No highly ranked local talent ever has.

Oh, wait...

I didn’t say there was no chance. I should’ve said IF he chooses someone else. The point of the post was, IF he chooses a different school, it won’t be for lack of effort on the coaching staff.

I take exception to you calling OU a “second-rate” basketball school. That has a negative connotation for me. I looked it up and some of the synonyms are bad, substandard, deficient, inferior, faulty, etc. There are 351 Division 1 basketball teams in 32 conferences. I consider OU in the top 10% or so of all teams. They may not be a perennial top 10 team but they sometimes are in that mix, but we don’t pay our players like some schools do.....

OU is easily in the top 10 percent. It is a top 20 all-time program, so close to being in the top five percent. If his point was simply that OU isn't a blue blood, that's fair. But second rate is definitely a poor choice of words, which I imagine he realizes.

Fair enough. It was indeed the word "when" that led me to think you were writing our chances off altogether.

It will be announced soon that Chris Crutchfield will be leaving for the same position
at Arkansas. This will cost us Bryce Thompson and any shot at Wilson. Our best
recruiter is leaving because Castiglione would not meet Arkansas offer. Yet we continue
to pay a women's basketball coach 1.2 million for a program that has gone steadily downhill
for several years plus losing over 2 million a year. I have been a season ticket
for 42 years and I have never been so disgusted. Served on the Tip-In club board for
over 30 years, including a term as president

Damn it all to hell! Probably a good move for Crutch with Lon nearing retirement. The ou women’s program is a huge burden to the AD in its current state. We could hire someone for ~$200k and get the same results.

Thanks for the update Leopard!

Man that is brutal news. Losing a coach to an inferior basketball program over what amounts to a drop in the bucket in the athletic department's budget is ridiculous. And for all those who constantly griped about the assistant coaches last year -- seems pretty clear that an unwillingness to pay limits the pool of top notch candidates willing to come to Norman. Sucks that it comes in these circumstances, but this is the type of inside info that few other than leopard can provide.

I wonder what it will take for Joe C. to realize that the fans are sick of the basketball programs (both are not where they need to be, in my opinion). Its pathetic to lose a coach like Crutch to a program like Arkansas (granted, they won a title, almost 25 years ago). Whatever, we know only football matters.

Didn't we pluck Taliaferro from Arkansas under Capel under the reverse circumstances? Not really sure if that means anything; mainly just an observation.

Sounds to me like OU was happy to "move on". Might have been a way to do just that without letting the guy go. Shouldn't be a big loss. Not saying it won't be, saying it shouldn't be.

Joe C isn't going to be cheap for the sake of being cheap. It's not like he owns the program and keeps any money they don't spend. Budget realities have likely been enforced from on high, you're never going to meet an athletic director who doesn't want to spend to get top talent.

OU will hire another 70-year-old assistant.

Joking

Highly doubtful imo. Crutch is a very valuable asset to the program.
