I remember this summer when the assistant coaches were announced, and pretty much everyone was surprised that no "name" assistant or HC from another program was hired. Then a lot of people got defensive about the hires and conversation got squashed as people took sides for or against. Looking at it now, although it's very early, is there a consensus on why these were the people hired for very important jobs? Do they deserve to be asst's at this level or not, and is this causing a problem for this season and our near future? Does anyone think there would be a huge difference in our play this year had we gotten an established quality assistant? Or were these the only people that could be convinced to jump onboard a perceived sinking ship? How much of our season is going to depend on what these guys can or cannot do?

I was surprised that two young guys were hired when at least one experienced coach would have been desirable.

Losing Mark Cline was devastating to the staff, I think his work with post players was very good.

In basketball, the head coach pretty much does it all but it's important to have good teachers at practice to help with the individual work needed to produce wins.

At this point, I don't know a lot about the assistants so it's hard to say but they are young.

Coach Capel blaming the tiny situation on Coach O made it impossible for Capel to hire any quality assistants. Coaches do not want to work for Capel after the way he handled the situation.

This. Capel has made it a bad habit of throwing players and assistants under the bus without taking any blame

Also I very seriously doubt Joe C. gave him much latitude (or money) to go out and try to hire "big name" assistants. The writing is on the wall.

I may be wrong on this but I see it as Willie Warren problems coming back to roost.

Willie and Coach O were a package.

Willie helped us get Tiny and TMG, also with the help of Coach O.

I think Coach O expected to be compensated with raises which may have never been promised.

When Capel cleaned house, he really cleaned house. He went after players with no hands out, no promises of excessive academic help and no character problems.

He may have approached the hiring of assistants in the same manner.

JMHO.

There is a lot of negative recruiting being said about OU. Capel might be gone and/or probation might be coming...... With Capel being on a short leash, not many top assistants are willing to move to OU for only one year. It's tough to build a resume'. Same can be said about recruiting. Not many kids want to go to a school in a state of turmoil.

The truth of the matter is that Capel had 2 quality assistants hired, but
they wanted 2 year contracts and Castiglione would not allow it. So we
end up with 2 assistants only 1 of which had recruiting experience.

I think Capel got rid of Coach O because of that AWESOME UNA-BROW he had. :facepalm

This is exactly what happened the biggest mistake Jeff has made was to hire coach O he brought these problems to us. And blaming coach O was not Jeff's idea it came from the top.

Very interesting
Not sure what this says about Joe C's commitment to Capel and/or OU basketball

Wow if this is true it is very telling and says a lot about the AD's support of Capel. Seems to me if you're gonna keep the guy as your coach letting him get good assistants to make your program better is reasonable especially considering they were only 2 year contracts. Does Joe think Capel won't be here past this year? If he does he wouldn't have been handicapped him with 2 assistants who aren't as good as we could have had.

Also I also don't buy the idea that Capel couldn't get good assts because of some perceived idea that he throws assistants and players under the bus. I haven't had a problem with anything he's said about a player to date. Can't really remember him EVER badmouthing an assistant either. I know he had problems with TMG and WW and talked about bits and pieces of the trouble publicly. But from what I've heard these 2 in particular didn't work hard and weren't coachable.

If you choose to be a cancer you are poisoning the "brotherhood" so to speak, and you lose the right to the team and coaches keeping you in the circle of trust. It's not throwing someone under the bus if they are down there trying to turn the bus over themselves while you are trying to drive it to success.
