Attendance problems at......Duke

This is a college basketball problem except for a very few. Texas had a game earlier this year in Austin where attendance was listed at 8,000 in a 16,000 seat arena. Tickets counted were 4,900. Look at the tourney we played in at California, probably less than a 1,000 every game! Women's attendance is doing the same all over the country. I don't know what the cause is, but it's not just a problem in Norman.

Yep, it's a problem everywhere, even Cameron Indoor. And, we're talking about an arena with a seating capacity of 9,314, not going on 12,000 it takes to fill the LNC.

Most people don't like ugly basketball and let's face it basketball in probably all levels has gotten real ugly. College basketball is downright terrible to watch right now and I love college basketball. NBA is a joke of a "game". HS basketball is starting to get ugly.
I blame AAU, the three point line and the obsession with dunks.

Wow someone sounds resentful. You truly sound like an old man sitting on a porch yelling at kids to get off your lawn. Mostly because you're missing the forest for the trees.

What the heck do the 3 point line and "obsession with dunks" have to do with bad basketball? Dunks are 2 points, and generally the most efficient way to score possible. Athletes skilled enough to dunk who attempt to dunk probably score at a higher percentage than any other play (think how many layups are missed below the rim). 3 point shots are game changing, and for those skilled at them increase point per shot percentages. A 40% 3 shooter is akin to a 60% 2 point shooter, which is awesome and takes less shots (and possessions) to reach same points. Coaches who don't have the insight or balls to regulate who gets to shoot 3s are the failures.

Don't blame 3's or dunks. Blame the generation parenting and coaching the current generation of players, for not having the balls and courage to break kids down once in awhile to send a message, and for letting politically correct rules govern what truly is best for teams and competition. Basically blame yourselves, stop blaming others. But just as you and I pass blame about why this or that sucks, they'll pass the blame to someone else to. Nothing changes, they learned it from us.

A Dem Coltz sighting!

The refs suck so bad, that their routine 20 bad calls/no calls are more important to the outcome than the players when 2 teams close in talent play.

I think the officiating has a lot to do with the current state of basketball. Guys are allowed to mug people on defense . The way defense is currently allowed to be played slows down the game and reduces the score.

In the late 80s and early 90s college basketball was doing great. There were several teams that were run and gun teams. Even the teams that weren't considered running teams scored more points. I think high scoring basketball is more attractive to most fans. I am fine with a 63-65 game but I think a significant number of fans find that less appealing than 86-88.

I don't know the statistics but I bet scoring is down 10-15 points since the late 80s. When was the last time OU broke 100? The answer is Maryland Eastern Shore in 2009 when Blake Griffin was a sophomore. Before that you go back to 2005 against Florida A&M and Baylor. In 1989 OU scored 100 or more points in 17 games. OU has not borken 100 points 17 times since Tubbs left. I suspect you would see similar numbers at other schools.

It's the home team that's allowed to do these things, which is a joke. If you exclude the abortion that is Texas Tech, I would bet that the home team wins 75% of the Big XII games. That's not because of noise, or familiarity. It's because of officiating.

I also think attendance problems have a lot more to do with competing things to do. A college football game is a day long party/ event. The experience is significantly better than watching it at home. That's simply not the case for basketball games. I went to every home game my senior year of college, but going to many of them felt like a chore. It's a lot easier to go watch the games at a bar and have some beers, or do the same in your living room.

I guess I don't see officials letting people get mugged. I see them calling ticky tack calls that slow the game down

Well oddly enough I agree with you but they also let players mug each other at the same time.

I am not sure how this fits the conversation but in the late 80s if you grabed the ball while on your back and moved it was consistently called a travel. You to immediately call time out. Now players roll aroudn on top of each other. No foul is called and one team often comes out with the ball and a fast break.

On the defensive end there is a lot of contact. Moving screens happen all the time. Plaming is accepted as part of the game. It just seems to me the officiating has changed a lot.
