Baylor/OU TV?

Having the team ready to play is just one area but I do think Kim did a better job of having her team prepared than did Sherri. I didn't think Sherri defended Baylor well at all. Baylor made three 3s. That's a total of 9 points. On the other hand, Baylor had 50 points in the paint. It doesn't take a Bob Knight to figure out that we have to stop the easy buckets in the paint. If that means moving all 5 defenders into the paint and dare Baylor to shoot outside, then do it. But, to continue to worry about the perimeter when we are getting killed inside made no sense to me at all.

On offense, I would have liked to see us go inside-out on just about every half-court set and try to create a few more easy scoring opportunities.

We let Baylor dictate the tempo, what we did on offense, and dared us to stop them with one or two defenders inside which we could not do.

Let's just say I respectfully disagree. For this team to come back the second half and slug it out even with the Bears says volumes about the guts of this team. Now the naysayers will argue, "Oh you're happy with playing even for a half"? Of course not, but I would much rather have a team to have some fight in them, instead of just laying down. How about from now on when we are down 20 at the half, we just go home. Yeah that makes sense. I remember many a game that the Sooners have come back from similar deficits and have won. Not happy but at least they didn't give up.

If I see one more (expletive deleted, deleted, deleted) bounce to the post that ends up lower than her knees when she has to catch it, I am going to scream.

I agree with Syb. I think it's time to bench Sharane and go two bigs. With Goyia, Peyton and Gabbi, we have the ability to shoot the 3 and the mid-range, as well as drive. It only makes sense to go Kalyon and Treece and bring Vivi off the bench to spell them, or reverse Treece and Vivi. Our bigs can clog the lanes, block shots. I know that may be risky because Kaylon is a fouling maniac, but I think it's time to take that chance.

Big game -- Kaylon doesn't show up. I am sick of that too.

I know Sherri loves the 4-guard set, but it's time to get tough and bigger. Let Sharane bring her energy off the bench. Ellenberg needed to be benched a few times to get her head straight. Kaylon had to be benched. It's Sharane's turn in the barrel.

I was really disappointed tonight. But I don't think the girls were unprepared to play.

The more I think about it it seems that first 15 minutes was filled with whatever it is that is causing Gioya to make all the out of control plays. I'm not saying it was only Gioya doing that - it was basically all of them - even the coaches for not getting it under control.

The question is - why has Gioya been playing that way lately? Is the erratic undisciplined play the 1st 15 minutes caused by the same thing? It was almost like they just thought if they threw the ball around it would end up in the basket. Really an undisciplined, out of control 15 minutes.

What causes that? Why did Sherri not call 2 or 3 timeouts to try to slow that down? I have no idea - but it puzzles me. Very few coaches let the opponent go on a 20 point run without several timeouts. Once you are behind by 20-25 points your timeouts are worthless anyway.
She did call one time out. I was rather surprised at her substitutions. She kept taking players out. But, nobody was making an effort. When she put Whitney in, I thought she was making a statement to the team.

From the outset, we simply did not play defense. This team thrives off of defense. It helps get our engine started. We didn't play D at all, even in the second half. We would hit a three, and we would let Baylor score uncontested. How many times was Agbuke alone under the basket when we scored? They let their center run the floor, and we had nobody go with her? She's all alone, under the basket? We had more braindead lapses than I have ever seen in a big game. People were wide open.

I keep hoping that we will have someone get angry and yell at the players making mistakes, even if it is a freshman. Let them know that it is not acceptable to be comatose. When we are at least semi-conscious, we are pretty good.

I tend to agree with this. We might try Treece, Maddie, and Nicole at forward to go with Kay Kay. But, Sharane simply isn't doing much right at this time.

I agree! And I think we found our leaders for the next few years. We got punched in the mouth and then Peyton and Gabbi decided they were going to do everything in their power to get us back into the game. Gioya had some good minutes, although not many as she was in severe foul trouble. Derica had some good minutes and I thought Vivi was tough getting some rebounds when she was in during the first half. Skeletor, outside of an NC game, would rather beat Sherri and OU more than anyone and her class showed when she tried to get 3 starters back on the floor when we cut it to under 20 with about THREE MINUTES LEFT IN THE GAME! I may be wrong, but I think it will be a different game in Norman. I think some young ones learned a few things tonight.

Cohen hit two free throws late. Other than that, the same players made all of the points for the entire game. They were still in there at the end.

I do like the idea. I would much rather have Maddie or Nicole in the 4 position because of their versatility, other wise I would use Kaylon and McKenna. Both,if need be, can step out and hit the twelve footer. As we go forward we may need the rebounding more than a four guard offense.

Boy it's obvious I know absolutely nothing about basketball. Thank goodness Peyton showed up tonight, other wise probably a 35 point loss. No contesting on the defensive end, and no toughness on the 50/50 balls. Davis is really, really good. I new she was a nice player, but she was the bomb tonight. The only bright spot as a team, is the kids didn't give up. When we got to 16 and had opportunities to get to 12 on back to back possessions, I thought they might make it a respectable game. We just forgot how to play defense and block out.

If the kids will come to play for 40 minutes, this team has the ability to beat the Bears at home, but they have to want it, and have to own the lane for that to happen. I still love this team.

Baylor has athletes all over the plce - again. Davis, Prince, Wallace. And Johnson is really good.

I'm only about ten minutes and am about ready to call it a night. I don't know what the rest of the game is like but this loafing back on defense is making me sick.

And Texas lost to OSU. All of the home teams win. I really do not get that we have such a high percentage of home teams win when compared to other conferences. If there was any type of crowd, even against me, it would pump me up. So, is it just shooting in a different gym and if your shooting is off, it affects everything? Surely, the refs aren't deciding all of these games.

Here is one factor tonight:

Texas (V) made 1 of 2 Free throws, were called for 15 fouls.
OSU (H) made 10 of 15 Free throws and were called for 8 fouls.

I-State (V) made 15 of 18 Free Throws and were called for 23 fouls. 2 fouled out 2 more with 4 fouls.
Texas Tech (H) made 17 of 23 Free Throws, were called for 19 fouls and had 1 foul out, 1 other with 4 fouls.

TCU (V) made 7 of 10 Free Throws and were called for 28 fouls. One fouled out, 3 more with 4 fouls.
K-State(H) made 23 of 37 Free Throws and were called for 12 fouls. No one with over 3 fouls.

OU(V) made 7 of 13 Free Throws and were called for 22 fouls. One player fouled out.
Baylor (H) made 16 of 23 Free Throws and were called for 17 fouls. One player with 3 fouls, no one else over 2 fouls.

Does officiating determine every game? Of course not. For example tonight that is not why we lost. But officiating is a statistically significant factor in determining the outcome and point spread of games generally. One factor - not the only factor.

Home teams do not always shoot more Free Throws - or get the better end of officiating. BUT they usually do. That is one of the reasons it is so hard to win on the road. You can deny it until you are red in the face. But the absolute facts - the numbers in Black & White - prove you are wrong.

Interestingly enough, once in a while - especially after a lopsided week like tonight - the next week visiting teams get more favorable calls. I sometimes wonder if someone in the Big-12 office has pointed out that it is becoming too obvious and says "do something about it".

They only correct it if Baylor or Texas is on the road.

There were a couple of bad calls on OU during the twenty point run that might have alleviated the run a bit. But, we weren't helping ourselves either. One of Kay Kay''s fouls was an obvious Davis foul, as Davis jumped into a perfectly still Kay Kay.

My only issue with that is how will they fare against these teams that have these 6' - 6'2" athletic girls that can bang? I wish we'd recruit a few of those.

Here is my prediction for the return game in Norman. If we don't get good scoring out of Sharane and Gioya and if Sherri defends Baylor the same way she did last night, we will lose by 15. It will be ugly just like it was last night.

I like Maddie at the 4. I could live with that. She has to be made to shoot more.

Hell, even Kellog could give you 2 or 3 minutes a game and not kill us.

Kornet, as much as I like the young woman, is just a complete liability on the floor. It's time we admitted that. She's a junior. It isn't getting any better.

IMO Baylor doesn't care if they are on the road. Last night happens anywhere. Whenever you practically have to play a perfect game to win the margin for getting stomped is small.

I hate to say it, but Gabbi might be a bit of liability on defense. She's not "slow", but she certainly is not quick. Nina Davis can get all the headlines, Niya Johnson was the player that beat us. This is a reoccurring theme that point guards have been able to beat us up.

With that being said, if we can atleast reroute Niya Johnson every once in awhile we can beat Baylor. It will take a team effort but, they can do it. Baylor played out of there minds, and we were afraid. Maybe not a afraid OF Baylor, but afraid to make mistakes AGAINST Baylor. That is not basketball. There is no room for timidness. We won't shoot like that again, and it will really help to face there speed once then come back and play them again. The game will slow way down the second time around- But we will have to stop Niya Johnson from breaking us down. She is Baylors best player IMO

Would also like to Add, our posts are soft. We a very run and gun/ offensive oriented- Sherri needs to toughen them up, or they can take a seat. We are a soft team otherwise, and vulnerable to anyone that wants to get rough.

Yes, they really are that much better and we might be the second-ranked team
in the conference, but other conference teams match-up better.

An hour before the game, Mulkey finds out she is not a number one seed at this time, they had just that much more incentive to not only beat us but to stomp on us. I can't fault her for that. (just the one point I am making before anyone goes ballistic with me)

I think maybe Maddie and a post and sometimes, two of the posts. McKenna can step away and shoot. I do wish it was something that had been done earlier in the season. I did not think of Maddie earlier because did not know how much nor how quickly or if she would comeback, but it had crossed my mind that maybe there were times we should play two of the bigs. Also, I think maybe Shaya but Sherri hasn't played her for a total of ten minutes(?) this season, so maybe not. I know she is involved in every game on the sidelines. When there is a timeout, she is often shown talking to Kay-Kay and it is like she is telling her what she is seeing.

The speed, agility and ability to elevate of some opponents is tough, but if two of the bigs could just limit their ability to get to the basket...clog up the middle, don't try to steal the ball, don't foul,...just get position and stand straight-up with their hands-up...this would be an improvement over what we have done is some games.

Did you somehow think I was arguing? I was wondering. FTR, I do believe other factors come into play in a home game other than the refs, but you said that also. As far as the different things that might also account for more fouls, away losses...I could be wrong....but there are things I wonder about but do not have the experience nor background to do anything but question.
