Best Teams not to win the NCAA Title

Since I was old enough to really start paying attention to college hoops, I'd say the best team to not win was that '91 UNLV team that entered the tournament undefeated. They had won the title the year before and had a win streak of something like 45 games before they lost to Duke in the semi-finals.

'88 OU would probably be #2 on my list. They were awesome.

Earlier teams would probably be the Phi-Slamm-Jamma team that lost to NC State and the Patrick Ewing Georgetown team that was upset in the finals.

Good observation, Jeff. All four of those would be in my top half-dozen, and I would agree the '91 UNLV team should be #1. Why? They won the title game the year before by 30 points with the exact same rotation. My other two would be the '97 Kansas team and the '99 Duke team.

Have to basically totally agree with osuJeff.
That UNLV team...'91 or '92, whichever it was, is my #1.
They were awesome. But that Duke team was pretty awesome too.

I would rank the '88 Sooners up there somewhere in my top 3 or 4.
The 1985 Georgetown team (35-2) that lost to Villanova would be there as well.
Throw in Houston and that's a good top 4.

I am struggling to think of others.
WaymanFan brings up a good one - '97 Kansas. That's my top 5.

Was the 97 Kansas team the year that Roy Williams publicly outed himself as the wheeper?

I don't remember. All I know is they were loaded.

And as a lifeling Celtics fan, I just have much respect for Pierce.

Collison/Heinrich's senior year could also maybe be mentioned?

Agreed about '97 KU and '99 Duke.

Remember that '99 Duke team played Bill Self's Tulsa team in the second round and destroyed them.

That Tulsa team returned almost everyone next year and went to the Elite Eight.
