Can you guys explain some Trump things to me?

When you're the president of the United States and you say something that you know is false like "The city of Portland is ablaze all the time" that isn't hyperbole, that is a bald-faced lie.

Trump isn't 8 years-old, but his followers (as demonstrated in this thread) make excuses for him all the time like they would one of their little kids. "Oh he's not lying! He just has a creative mind and likes to make up fantastical stories!" He has the lowest bar of any public official I've ever seen. He's the most dishonest and corrupt politician in my lifetime and I was alive (barely) when Nixon was around. He even lied last night and said that Mexico is paying for the "wall." I'm sure Andres Obrador is laughing his ass off.

I think people need to go read the dictionary on what a lie is. A lie is something that is said that is intentionally told to deceive.

You can't lie out of ignorance...that would be just being wrong.
You can't lie out of hyperbole (maybe you could but it would be rare).
It has to be intentionally deceiving someone

Hyperbole absolutely can be used to deceive. That is well established. Is it a lie? Technically, probably not. But it is a form of deception.

Some of the examples you gave are more figures of speech than hyperbole...

See how the bar is lower for Trump?

"He wasn't *intentionally* deceiving anyone, he's just ignorant!" isn't much better when you're the president of the United States of America.

I think what I find funny, is that now, all of a sudden, the liberals on this board are so triggered and offended by everything Trump does. Even tho all politicians lie and tell half truths. All politicians and presidents have done this and far worse than anything Trump has done. You and your friends think Trump is the devil and cling to any hope that one of the hundreds of made up stories will be true. Yet, you make excuses for Obama and other liberals who’ve done the same or worse.

You all are hypocrites. Pathetic.

Red herring.

And some cannot but feel betrayed that Santa Claus is not for real. Their antics are indeed childish and behavior displayed by those with dainty hands. Being gullible is in no way an excuse for being dumb.

that is just ridiculous

hyperbole itself is a figure of speech.

It can be used as deception, but in itself, it is not.

Let's be honest...do you guys really think Trump meant to deceive people by saying all of portland was on fire? Do we really think people are out there thinking that literally the entire city, every sq inch, of portland is on fire because trump said that?

This is an odd position to take

And the hits just keep on coming. He lied to us about Covid-19. Of course we all already knew this, but it's nice to have confirmation.

Being ignorant and lying are completely different and shouldn't be confused. One is forgivable and one isn't. We are talking about lying. If you want to discuss how many wrong statements Trump makes, you won't find much push back from me.

Trump is the President of the United States. What excuse does he have for ignorance? He can get a briefing any time, day or night, from the most senior expert in any field he desires. It's inexplicable incompetence or it's lying, it can't be both.

I never said it was both.

We are discussing lies. If you want to discuss ignorance, we can. It won't be much of a discussion

Yes I'm sure you don't want to discuss how ignorant Trump is. It's just hard to figure out if he's lying or ignorant. That can be a problem.
