Capel: "I just didn't get enough time"

I like Capel, but I feel that his system isn't suited for the guys that would typically consider Oklahoma. When we had NBA type talent, we were really good. But with the everyday college player, we struggled.

The issue for me is what would it have taken next year to not fire Capel. Based on past success and failures, making it to the NCAA and increasing attendance would have probably been enough to keep his job for one more year. I don't think this was going to happen. We didn't have the talent to compete in the Big XII and fans aren't showing up for losses. Thus, why wait until next year, fire him this year and move on.

Kruger now has an extra year to develop his system.

I agree with his comments.

That being said, I think Kruger will do a good job.

Every coach that thinks they got fired too early uses that same excuse. I believe John Blake said the same thing 12 years ago.

But I honestly don't have a big problem with anything Jeff said in context. Even that comment. He didn't try to blame OU for what happened, It seems like he thinks he got screwed by what happened in general. The comments about being stuck in a tornado show this. But that's what you expect when you get a firing.

He had a lot of time. He just mismanaged personnel so atrciously that he needed "more time" to recover from his mistakes. OU is not a learner job. It should be a destination for those already accomplished.

He had more than enough time. I couldn't be happier he's gone. I love what Kruger is doing. He's getting rid of the rift raft Capel brought in or wanted to and will run a solid program that will bring the fans back to the LNC.

This is best for both parties. I wish Coach Capel well.

This was more like a man-made disaster.
Kinda like Chernobyl.

The only difference is, after I post, there's not 5 other posters face palming. Can't say the same for you.

I'm going to avoid face-palming, OUhoops11, but I'll admit here that, for all the value I find in your posts -- and there's a good deal -- I often find them needlessly contentious and confrontational. There's no need to call out or insult posters you disagree with; simply state your counter-argument and let the wisdom of your post stand as sufficient.

I realize the irony here -- that I'm, in effect, calling you out -- but I'm only doing so because of your suggestion that BOB's posts are somehow not appreciated and considered worthy, while your own are. There's an arrogance in that stance that's risky, at best. It's a rare poster indeed (and I'm certain that I'm not one of them) who doesn't annoy, confound and even anger a certain percentage of the other posters on a board like this one. BOB's hardly alone in that.

So consider this, if you will, a face-palm in prose.

Lester Lane did not get enough time.

Jeff Capel, on the other hand, had plenty of time to prove he had what it took to be our coach.

Enough time for what? His last two years were the worst in our history. Is there another level for screwing up a program? Sorry, but I'm not buying that excuse.

On the personal side, however, I wish Coach Capel nothing but the best. I still believe that he is a good guy who was simply in over his head at OU. Hopefully, he'll learn from the experience and be better for it.

exactly

I actually don't disagree with Capel about more time...but he contributed significantly to getting less time (and there were many circumstances outside his direct control there also).
