Capel promotes Goodman, Phelps to assistant coach positions

Re: Capel promotes Goodman, Barnes to assistant coach positions

Should be great for recruiting and new ideas for defense, offense, etc.

Re: Capel promotes Goodman, Barnes to assistant coach positions

Are these the best 2 guys for the job? Time well tell. But from a standpoint of trust, i am sure Capel feels being around these guys for awhile he can trust them... So i am all for the choices....

Re: Capel promotes Goodman, Barnes to assistant coach positions

I hope both guys contribute to the staff but would have liked if Jeff hired more atleast one experienced guy such as Bobby Lutz. Also, Oronde was Jeff's connection to AAU coaches....I hope these guys can recruit.

I think I pretty much agree. I don't really care about the recruiting but I'm really surprised he did not want a fresh set of eyes to come in and look at the way we do things. It doesn't mean that the other two guys aren't perfectly competent, just that sometimes a new perspective can really help things.

Wow, this is a surprise.

Wonder if Kellen regrets leaving now. I wonder if he would if got promoted in front of Dione guy.

Kellen wouldn't have gotten promoted in front of Dione. Dione was a head coach in college.

Weak. And I'm a Capel supporter. This does not help me sleep at night, even though I don't lose sleep over the OU BBall program.

Do you really think any employed asst. coaches from outside of the program were going to pursue a job at OU with a probable probation and a possible firing of Capel next year. I think these hires speak volumes about what's going on behind closed doors.

You guys shouldn't be so surprised about Goodman. I always thought he would get one of the two openings and deserves it. The Phelps promotion is more surprising.

Just out of curiosity, who are the best players Phelps or Goodman have recruited during their career?

I thought we would've hired at least 1 guy who was connected in the AAU world. Maybe we did and I just don't realize it.

Anybody critisizing these hires is "weak". Truth is, you know nothing about either of these two individuals...most people are so shallow..they think if you don't hire a "name" guy like Lutz, etc. then it is a bust. We need guys who have character, can communicate, coach fundamentals of defense and are hard workers dedicated to the university.

Lutz would be looking for the first train out of here so he could be a HC again..plain and simple. Get a clue! Goodman is a great great guy..and is a solid hire. I thin ktime will validate these hires.

Makes me think that coaches out there don't believe the Oklahoma program is stable with Capel at the helm. People must think he won't be around in the next couple of years. This just tells me Capel couldn't hire anyone outside the program, so he had to promote from within. Not a great sign if you ask me. But at least he knows what he's getting.

Are you insinuating you know something about these 2 guys? Did you think OT was a good hire too? How'd that turn out?

I asked a question. Who have they recruited? Still no names of difference makers they have ever landed. We won't beat many Big12 teams with the Bucknell or UTSA level recruits.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that an assistant job at OU isn't highly valued today or we would have heard of some interviews.

C'mon, what assistant coach does NOT want to be a head coach somewhere? I wanted to get Lutz just for the thought that Jeff could have a fresh and new perspective on things. I thought Jeff needed to hire at least one Lutz-type assistant. Oh, well. We'll just have to see how things play out and hope that we all look foolish for not being excited about these hires.

I expected Goodman to get promoted and I don't have a problem with that, but promoting Phelps from "video coordinator" to assistant coach is a very surprising move.

Goodman for Taliaferro seems like a good deal because I didn't think OT did much coaching...he looked clueless to me. Phelps for Cline is a downgrade, so I'd say the coaching staff overall is less than it was last year. Not to mention as Romulus said no new ideas for offense and defense, which is sorely needed.
