Spoke with a very well respected retired coach tonight. He as no idea what OU is trying to do nor does this coaching staff according to this coach. Said OU has enough talent to win games but they have no identity yet again this year.

i think the real thing they dont have is a coach!! because there is no accountability with these players.. i hope capel is showing these guys film after every game so they can see the lack of discipline mistakes and improve on them

they have assistant coaches that have never coached (or have very little coaching experience) and they have a head coach that has not done squat without BG.

The substitution patterns are puzzling to say the least.

Why don't Tyler Neal and CJ Washington play more?

Why don't Tyler Neal and CJ Washington play more?
Neal's been playing well, so he gets the start. Comes out 8 minutes into the game and isn't seen again until late in the second half. Washington had played relatively well, and was expected to see more time. Isn't seen at all til, what was it, last few minutes of the first half?

Unfortunately, despite Newell playing well for the most part tonight, it wouldn't surprise me if he barely plays next game.

I agree with about everything in this thread, especially Neal starting and then not coming back in until well into the second half.

But Mr. ButterMaker did this coach say exactly who this talent is that OU can with?

He is certainly entitled to his opinion, but I have no idea how anyone can make this claim with a straight face.

Who's the tough rebounder on this team?
Who's the legitimate leading scorer?
Who's the point guard who can consistently maintain a positive A/T ratio?
Who's the lockdown defender?
Who's the vocal leader? Or a leader period?
Who's the guy off the bench who can bring instant offense/spark?
Who's the guy who refuses to lose late in the game?
Who's the guy who can create his own shot against a good defensive team?
Who's the guy who can consistenyl knock down key threes?
Whose athleticism causes problems on both ends of the floor?

I'm sure Coach Capel knows he has to do a better job, push some different buttons, find some different options, etc. However, he's not on the floor throwing the ball away or forcing up bad shots or not blocking out or not stopping the dribble drive. Sure, he's ultimately responsible for making sure his players do these things, but he can only yell at them and show them what they're doing wrong so much. Players eventually have to start making plays, or at least stop forcing bad ones.

lol, serious? All of our talent outside Cade are sophomores and freshman. This team does not have the horses.

Every team in America watches film, having it translate to the floor is a different thing.

Since Capel has been here our only real identity was a player. We've had no identity on both sides and I'm thinking more and more it's not about talent. Last year we had talent everyone liked coming in. I'm not saying that group should have worked out. But maybe the talent didn't work because the system was poor too.

Holy crap, I know what the problem is! When Capel hired the video coordinator he forgot to hire someone to take his place. This team must not have watched tape all year. If only Joe C would give Capel the budget he wanted we'd be able to hire the best video coordinator in the country. Problem solved. Clearly, video killed the JC3 star.

I am a coach also, and I really don't like what they do offensively. That same old shuffle-cut offense over and over is really gettin old to watch. They run one or two little variations off it, but looks pretty easily scoutable to me and doesn't give our guys a real good chance to be successful. I have also never thought they were real disciplined with their rebounding. Blake and Taylor would both just turn and go get it. That usually worked for us until we got against people with the same kind of athletes those guys were. All these other years it hasn't worked out very well at all. And we aren't a fast break team or a team that is a great half-court offensive ball-control team either, so I agree with the no identity thing too. Not sure I agree we have alot of talent, but again, whose fault is that? Not sayin I wanna run JC off, but I would really like for him to show me a direction or kind of coach he wants to be. SOON please!!! LOL

Exactly, we ran these identical sets in high school and if you don't come off screens hard and if you don't set real screens and if you do not throw the back screen lob ever to make the D honest than this offense is stale.. Unfortunately we do not do any of these things

They don't have enough talent to win. But he's correct in they don't have an Identity. He needs to cut his losses on some guys and get core guys ready. That means Neal, Newell, Fitz, and Clark. That's the core talent of this team. They need to find some sort of defensive philosophy. They actually pressure pretty well and are better defensively than last year. Maybe Thompson at the top of a key in some zone situations.

no offense works if you don't run it hard and well.

That team didn't work out because principally one member with a little help ruined any chance for this team to be competitive. Some kids dont listen - some kids dont hear no matter how loud you yell. My problem is the Lack of judgment in choosing him. If he was as dumb as he certainly appears to be, how could Capel have missed it?

the most disappointing thing to me is the lack of intensity on defense by nearly everyone except Cade.
and last night, omg.. how many charges did we have? seriously? there were a few that might have been questionable, but heck ark was camping in the lane and we kept driving right to them.
to me it seems like we have a 3 point shooting team. i am very disappointed in Thompson. how many rebounds has he really gotten this year? not the ones batted around that he got to, but the ones he went up and got? and i know cj is coming off an injury so maybe that is the reason he doesnt play much.
it obvious our offense runs a lot smoother with blair out there, but it is also obvious that several players still dont know the offense well enough to run it. and looks like several are just going through the motions.

anyway, the way i look at it is that things can only get better b/c im not sure they can get any worse.

I think the team's defense over the past five years has been deplorable (BG made up for a lot of deficiencies) for major college basketball. They don't rotate, help, or communicate in either zone or man. Typically, when you play multiple defenses, it's cause you can't defend anyone in a man.

Defense and rebounding is a lot about emphasis and player desire. I often wonder if they do shell drill or defensive series drills in practice. It doesn't look like it most of the time and the players act indifferent.

Offensively, the team is challenged because they have no primary scorer (sorry but CD is not a consistent primary scorer).

But that is not a reason not to defend and rebound.

If this team thinks it's going to win by outscoring other teams, they may not win 10 games total. It all starts with defense.
