Football question

The Texas game is in 2.5 weeks. That would be a borderline miracle since he's having surgery tomorrow. We can hope he can go against South Carolina, but I'm guessing Mississippi is the more likely scenario. The guy is obviously a tough SOB since he broke his hand in the 1st quarter and kept on playing...but we all know the coaches will make the final decision on the return date.
the comp would be Jerod Goff

he missed 19 days .. Mateer would have 17 days to texas

Goff was 21 of 27 for 174 yards and a touchdown less than three weeks after undergoing thumb surgery,

that said I do not expect JM back until South Carolina (and if hawkins looks good OU might sit mateer until Ole miss )

I don't think texas would happen but Mateer is a gamer and probably really really wants to play in the red river rivalry....so i won't rule it out.

I haven't seen a lot that I like from Hawkins in the passing game so hopefully he has improved there.

But its not like mateer was tearing it up in the passing game either. His numbers are pretty abysmal...like below trevor knight numbers.

Hes using the exact same surgeon.. it'll be tight and personally I don't expect him back by tejas. But my friend that is an insider says he'll be back. Who knows

well, if he's not able to come back in time for Texas, i bet he's back the week after. I wouldn't want to rush his return and have him reinjure himself in the process. I don't think Hawkins is good enough to beat Texas alone, so the run game will definitely have to step up, and our defense is always on point, so it'll be interesting. If he's out and we lose, are our goals for the rest of the season ruined? Only time will tell!

I guess the question is, do we know if it is the exact same break? It sounds like the Indiana QB broke a bone near the top of his finger. Not sure where Goff's was, or where Mateer's is, or whether it is displaced.

If it is near the base, it would be extremely tough to have the range of motion to grip the ball. I broke a bone at the base of my thumb and it took several weeks before I had any range of motion -- i couldn't even come close to touching my thumb to my pinkie. Of course, my doctor initially misread the x rays, so they didn't realize it was broken for a month. By that point, they decided against surgery since the bone had started healing on its own.

67% completion percentage and 300yds/gm isn't abysmal.
he does need to clean up 2-3 passes per game to up his game to elite status.
gotta hit that pass to barnes that went high....would have been a td.

I agree with this. It’s an unpopular opinion but a lot the reason Mateer has had to put his team on his back in the 4th against UM and Auburn is because of turnovers or missed throws earlier in those games. I’m glad he’s good enough to overcome the mistakes but he’s not lighting it up. I see no reason why Hawkins cant be as good as Mateer in the pass game.

Maybe abysmal is too strong. But just looking at his rating, it isn't good.
Outside of Illinois state, his rating has been in the 130s for every game

He isn't in the top 50 for qb rating in the country and if you take out the first game, he would be around 75

Mateer has been solid. But it shows what a joke the Heisman machine has become because he was leading pretty much every straw poll.
Makes you wonder who votes on such things.

mateer has been very effective with both his arm and his legs.
again....fix 2-4 bad passes per game....and he's definitely one of the top qb's in the country based on his total offensive impact.

Very true, but also, no one else has really shined, either. The QBs who came into the year with a lot of hype have not been great. Smith, the OSU receiver, didn't play very well against Texas. I'd guess we will start to get a clearer picture in the next two or three weeks.

Ott is my dark horse. They seem really confident he is about the break out. (And yes, I am obviously kidding.)

Don't get me wrong, I don't think I would trade him for anyone else in the country...his running ability, toughness, and intangibles are off the charts.
But just as a pure passer, I'd say he is average. A lot of that could be working with new receivers and a lack of a running game.
And you are right, he has been just barely off on a few big plays a game that would greatly help his stats.

I think our WRs are nothing to write home about. If he had better WR talent, I think you'd also see a boost for Mateer

Took a 6-7 team to win 2 top 25 games.

Best player in the country right now.

I don't know about the best player in the country, but he certainly has my vote for the best "leader" in the country. Mateer gets a lot of comps to Baker....and some of those are true with the way he plays with reckless abandon/gunslinger. However, I think a better comparison may be to Tebow (in leadership). I'm not saying Baker wasn't a great leader (Baker was much more brash than Mateer), but I just see how he commands the presence of his team like Tebow did (a calming influence for lack of a better term).

I agree. I like mateer a lot and he’s a great leader and football player. I think his throwing motion and lack of accuracy prevent him from being an elite QB tho. He's really good but he could be elite if he masters the finer points of the passing game, like touch throws and putting the ball in more tight windows accurately.

i don't know if his throwing motion can be changed/fixed....but his low release costs him a couple completions per game when they're batted down by linemen.
