Football question

Took a little while to settle in. Got going. Really good 2nd half
Offense humming a few drives. X fumble killed one obviously.
You see that all the time in football. Opponent goes down and scores easily the first drive and the fans flip out thinking the game is over.

Some teams are just really good with their opening script

BV has built a very good team in pretty much all facets except the QB. It’s incredible what he’s done with the defense. The guys are CLEARLY bought in to what he is selling. He somehow found the best kicker, I think, in program history. Special teams, overall, has been solid. He is a good quarterback away from a playoff birth this year. I hope he sees that and goes and gets a guy from the portal to compete with Mateer. I think Mateer is a very easy guy to root for, but if BV is serious about winning championships then he’s gotta atleast try to make a change in the offseason.

I agree, Wayman. I thought they’d kick deep, load the box to try to stop the run, and hope to get the ball back down two with a minute left. It’s a tough call so I don’t think it was a terrible decision, but there is definitely an argument to kick deep.

Regardless, hats off to our line. I didn’t like our chances to get a first down if we just tried to run it up the middle multiple times, but it didn’t even take more than one snap. And I love the fact that X had the presence of mind to look to the bench and see whether they wanted him to score. That was another tough call … we couldn’t run the clock out, and making it a two score game is hard to turn down. It worked out well that we forced them to burn one more timeout and still got the 7 pts. But lots of players would have spaced out and forgotten to check with the sideline.
Gotta love that SOUL mission my dude. Made it all happen.

Just enjoy the win. Try it. It’s fun. Winning is fun

Well, I am still incredibly underwhelmed with Mateer, but BOOMER SOONER!!!

Also, BV forsure gets another year for better or worse after this.

just like early in the season.....all mateer has to do is play steady.
but what the hell was that in the first half?
it's like his "handler" bet the under in the first half and the over in the second.
looked like 2 completely different qb's out there from one half to the next.

and why do our receivers never get open like tennessee receivers?

that was one of the strangest ou games i've ever seen.....ever
heupel could have named the score but some of his play calls were just as bad as arbuckle's.
and he choked big time in the red zone.

The jumping while throwing was mind boggling

Tenn wr are way better than ou.

But ours need to do better on the scramble

Couple of notes from being at the game:
  • The atmosphere was everything it was hyped to be....and more. Tennessee fans are fantastic; gracious at every turn. The campus was beautiful and the UT Navy is something you need to see. If any of you get a chance to go back in 4 years, you should put it on your bucket list.
  • I expected the defense to give up some chunk plays....UT is really good on offense. The disappointing part to me was the tackling. It wasn't bad the whole game, but there were some big plays that would have been nullified if they had just tackled better.
  • Mateer was poor in the 1st half (happy feet, indecisive) and much more confident/decisive in the 2nd. The conventional running game obviously helped. He was able to get the ball out quickly and confidently. And we even threw it over the middle a few times....yeah!
  • Outside of the fumble, X was really good and physical in the run. Smart play to get down on the 1 late after breaking through the line.
  • Tate Sandell is a beast....enough said.
  • Regarding Mateer's late INT, it was an RPO call.....and it never should have been called. BV should be all over Arbuckle's a$$ for that one. It could have cost us the game.
  • And this team has to clean up pre-snap penalties and getting the right guys on the field before the play. We were fortunate that we got away with it last night....we likely won't get away with sloppiness like that again.

I was kinda shellshocked in the 1st quarter, but I was trying to stay calm and see how we settled in. From midway through the 2nd quarter on, I thought we were the better team despite the, again, bad tackling. If you've followed Bama this year and their box scores/metrics, they are far from unbeatable. I believe they are ripe for a loss. Not saying we will beat them and I don't really expect to, but the line should only be around Bama -9. Crazier things have happened. And we have to play clean to have a shot.

I don't know much about OLs in the SEC, but they did better than any I've seen early in the game. The game changed as soon as we could get pressure, starting with the RMT TD.

I was watching the WS, so not sure if we dialed up blitzes or just got better individual performances, which is not what I expected after RMT went out. Gotta love that performance against the top scoring offense in P5 with RMT and Kobie out. One or two key injuries used to open the floodgates.

Winning at bama isn’t easy! No matter who is back there. I’m just saying we play at bama!

No doubt, they're tough. Best defense we'll face all year...and maybe the best offense as well. And I'm not predicting a win with mediocre QB play like I did last night. Tennessee might actually be the worst defense we face all year, though they'd be top 2 or 3 in almost any year of Riley's Big 12 tenure.

All I'm saying is that the injury excuse is over. No excuses from a coaching perspective either, as we have 2 weeks to prepare. They have a better defense than Texas, but I don't expect we'll see remotely as bad of a performance.

Fun game. Some coaching blunders by both sides but hard fought win for us. Thought, obviously outside of the slant pass interception, that Arbuckle called a good game in the second half. Runs by X and Mateer and short controlled passes. D was up and down but made some good plays. Sandell is the MVP of this team so far though. Kid is good.

Sounds like Johnny got greedy. RPO.

Its sad were winning games despite our coaches.. I think BA was still terrible. XRob needs 20+ touches a game (we havent lost a game in conference when he gets more than 10). And the run game has little diversity to it. I think we went outside 1 time that I can remember and we immediately got 8 yards..

Freeze gone!!

With as crazy as the coaching carousel is, and depending on OU finishes.. does Brent get an offer somehwere?

Xrob had 7+ ypc and we only give him the ball 16 times. That’s criminal. It makes the late pass, on first down no less, even more egregious. We found something that was working and then, when we needed it most, we just decide to pass. On first down. Dumb.

Great win. We were not good at the start but did better as the game went on. Second half was much better and more indicative of what we’re capable of doing. There are still way too many penalties and way too many dumb calls by the coaches. The days of us knowing how to win seem to be gone and we’re having to learn that all over again these past 4 years. Players and coaches are still learning how to win these games. Hopefully, many lessons were burned into their minds last night and they won’t be making those mistakes anymore.

I thought mateer was clearly better in the second half, especially after he finally connected on a downfield pass to Sategna. That really seemed to get him going. He needs to build on that.

Despite all of our flaws, we are 7-2 with a very real path to 9-3 or 10-2. We aren’t perfect but we’re still a good team and we’re still fighting like hell. Bama is very beatable but we have to play cleaner and sharper.
