Football question

I worry that Mateer won’t make it through the season. It’s obvious that the coaches fully understand that we can’t succeed with a traditional run game, and if we have to have him carry the ball 8-10 times per half again real teams like this, it’s trouble. But I may be wrong. Maybe we are saving Ott for Temple.

That's a very good point. We can't have Mateer running it 19 times...not sure I'm comfortable with 9 times. Get the backs involved ASAP. That may mean having Ott or Blaylock running it over and over again until one gets comfortable. In watching Joe Mixon in the NFL over the past 8 years, I saw many a game which he did very little for three quarters and then starts breaking out in the last 15 minutes...he just wares a defense down. Some RBs cannot get into a flow with 1-2 carries per quarter.

And speaking of RBs, we've all been giving Barnes a lot of grief this past week, but he did have the only two decent RB carries tonight.

Yea they need to figure something out. There will be games where teams find a way to slow Mateer, and/or we need to score more because we are playing against a better offense. I’m not a football Xs and Os guy so I’m not sure how to explain the lack of success for the RBs. I am mainly baffled by what’s going on with Ott. If he is close to the player everyone said he is, there has to be a way to make that show up on Saturdays.

And I agree, I’m not a Barnes fan by any means but he did come up with some important plays tonight. But I agree with you — we need to figure out a way for one of the backs to get rolling.

Great game! I like Mateer a lot but he misses too many throws. #5 saved the day with breaking up that interception. Would have been huge had Michigan got it.
Also gotta get the running game going. Ott clearly is currently a bust. Defense is elite.

They looked three to four tds more talented than Michigan. Too have that many errors and to win says something. Defense looks like Clemson championship level. Mateer making mistakes but is good at bouncing back, something that we didn't see last year. Barns best complete back at this point but needs good offensive line because he is not as quick. Freshman rb most upside, ott still looks not fully healthy and could be best back, hopefully by texas game.

Very impressed with last night's win. So nice to have a D that can wipe out mistakes from the special teams. We were the far better team, not that Michigan is much. They're in jail right now because they paid the QB all that money and he has no clue how to play the position.
Anxious to see how we continue to scheme the run game. Some quick hitters, maybe? Can't have Mateer taking that kind of punishment. The knives will come out for the kneecaps if we leave him that exposed. If we're going to line up Kanak at FB why not give him the ball on the belly play a time or two? Too risky, the fumble?

He throws too hard and doesnt have the touch that our heisman QBs had. Hes somewhere between Hurt and Rattler. I like his toughness and hes the sort of guy college football is built off of but hes not close to baker but thats all you're going to hear all year ha

Mateer is fine. Not sure how anyone can complain about him after last year and looking around the country

This. He’s perfect for this year’s football team. But he’s not elite imo. And that’s okay!

No complaints. Just concerns. OU loses if Kanek doesn’t make an amazing catch and Satenga (I think) doesn’t break up an interception. It’s worth discussing. He’s got a lot to clean up if OU wants to get to 8 or 9 wins.

We dominated. I don’t think those 2 plays make us lose. Kanek was literally on the first drive

Yeah and his amazing catch led to a td. Without that it is like 14-13 when Mateer has his almost interception. Again, Mateer is the guy for this year. But the hype is too much. He needs to get more accurate with the football for this team to have a chance at 9 wins. That is, partly, because the running game is struggling yet again 😬

I agree that Mateer is a good bit shy of Baker and Kyler. That means he will likely make some critical mistakes and have some poor games, which makes it even more important that they figure out the run game and eliminate the boneheaded mistakes. I chuckled listening to some of the postgame talk, which was along the lines of “think how good we’ll be when we clean up the mistakes and don’t beat ourselves.” Um … it’s been 41 games (and counting) of sloppy plays and beating ourselves. The stuff that happened last night would probably lead to a one-sided loss against some of the teams on our schedule, especially on the road.

We dominated Michigan and were clearly the better team. The only thing that made it close was our stupid mistakes on special teams. Rouging the kicker and the muffed punt both cost us great field position and likely points.

Defense got outflanked on the one Michigan TD. **** happens. Other than that, we shut them down. They couldn’t sustain anything and didn’t really threaten us.

Mateer is good but he missed too many throws. Underthrew a few that would’ve been huge plays. Overthrew Kanak in the EZ that would’ve been a TD. He’s a very elusive runner and I like that part of his game. He can’t be the only running threat tho. We have to get the run game going with the RBs. Mateer can’t do everything.

I expect this team to get better, the more game experience they get playing together. We are obviously better but we still need to clean up some things. All things that are correctable. I also expect the OL to continue getting better, especially as the young guys get more game experience. This team has a chance to be really good.
