The Hawkins decision will depend on what happens in each game. If Mateer suffers an injury that takes him out for an extended period, and/or in a close game, Hawkins will play. If we are blowing a team out or Mateer just suffers a minor injury and has to leave for a series, then I would expect them to put in the third string guy. If they do want to preserve a redshirt, I don't think they would waste one of the four games just to play him for a handful of snaps.

I would not be surprised if temple gives us a good game. We should use 1 of his 4 in a "tune-up" game, then hedge the rest of the year in case of injury

They changed that bowl rule do to so many opting not to play.

BV confirmed today at his press conference that the plan is to redshirt Hawkins if possible. I'd be surprised to see him play against Temple. Maybe not even against Kent State. Just in case he is needed later in the season. I'd probably play him against Kent State, but if you are truly playing it safe, you don't. Somebody other than Mateer needs to play against Kent State though. They are bad.

That's where you would be taking a big gamble, though. Do you want to burn two of his four chances in games that should be blowouts if we do our job? Or would you rather save all four for competitive games, either because he is needed due to a Mateer injury, or because you might have a package of plays for him that you think might help us win a close game?

And, circling back, 3 YPC is awful. I'm confident we'll figure out something. Running Mateer as much as we did isn't sustainable.

you never know. mateer is pretty good about not taking big hits. out of 19 carries i remember only once where he got popped.
remember the old wishbone days? no one was all that concerned about our qb's running too much

i do agree that 19 carries is too many. rb's need to get some of those in the future. especially blaylock and ott.
but if it's a crucial 3rd down and 3-5 yds.....i'm good with mateer running it. he has the patience and vision to exploit the holes in the defense.
at the moment...we don't have a rb that can do that consistently yet.

19x is a lot of running but he’s 4 inches shorter than Josh Allen and near the same weight.

Josh Allen ran 17x vs the ravens.

I’m good with 10-12 runs a game.

Getting a wishbone quarterback hurt running the ball wasn’t as much of a concern because it was their primary job and we only threw the ball about once a month. When you run an offense that is primarily dependent on the pass, and your starting quarterback is significantly better than his backup, it becomes much more worrisome.

We haven’t even been able to keep a running back healthy for more than a handful of games in a row the past three years or so. It isn’t just the big knockout shot you have to worry about. It’s the cumulative effect or taking a bunch of hits in the run game, on top of any times he gets hit on pass plays. And unlike backs, he doesn’t get to come out for a series or two if he needs a break.

Kyler averaged 10 carries his last season, but he is arguably the fastest quarterback ever and he was rarely running on the interior. He also was great at knowing when and how to slide.

The reason that is a bad comparison is because in the wishbone era you didn't have 325-pound DTs running a 4.9 at them...or 275-pound DEs running a 4.6. Players are bigger, stronger and faster now. With all those RBs on the roster, it's my wish we can develop one or two of them to be productive and average at least 4 YPC.

If we can get the RBs going, that will decrease the necessity of QB run game. I also think we’ve only scratched the surface of the offense. I’m still very optimistic about this team. I think a lot of the overreaction is just that.

We tend to oversell the OU deficiencies while downplaying our opponents short comings. If you look around, everyone has weaknesses and there is no team that’s clearly better than everyone else. It’s wide open and nobody in the SEC will go undefeated. The margin for error is razor thin.

It’s also worth noting that every SEC team we play is ranked. Has that ever happened before? Talk about fair scheduling. lol. I think every unranked SEC team is on texas schedule. Wow.

If the offensive line can play together consistently that should open more holes for the RBs and help out there. I think Blaylock looks like the best back overall so far. You probably will still see Barnes play some because he's a solid pass blocker. Not sure what happened with Ott or Robinson.

and you want him to continue to develop thus he needs to play when he can ..


and if mateer gets hurt his RS gets blown .. but giving him 2 games if needed is plenty enough for the final 7 games of the year ..

Pros and cons both ways. In basketball, I think it’s ridiculous to redshirt guys these days. But with a backup quarterback, I think you want to preserve eligibility if possible, even though there is every chance that our 2028 quarterback isn’t on campus yet.

Why in basketball? I get all the transfers but say atak knows he isn’t a pro.. Can play 5 years. Make $80-200k by the time he leaves.

Because in basketball, even the 10th man on the roster can realistically help you win a game, and might be needed due to foul trouble or because someone else is playing like crap. In football, there is only one quarterback on the field at a time and the backup only plays due to injury or a blowout. I’d rather save the four games for injury purposes. I’d guess we see our third stringer in noncompetitive situations.

i want to see him run on 3rd and short...and inside the 5yd line.
it makes the offense more difficult to defend.
1st and 2nd down is where the rb's need to be effective to get us to 3rd and short.
