Football question

I don’t think I can listen to Gabe and Teddy anymore in the off season. And they’re reasonable compared to many in the media when it comes to OU football
I understand. I’m torn on them. They clearly are incredibly knowledgeable when it comes to the sport, but they can’t seem to be objective in evaluating our roster. Especially Gabe, but Teddy isn’t immune to it, either.

It’s a dang good thing Texas offense sucks too. It doesn’t sound too promising that mateer will play so Hawkins will be QB1. I have zero faith in him to lead the offense. None. I don’t think we can win this game, or any remaining sec games, with Hawkins.

John is gonna play.

Texas being favored is wild

Ikard is awful. I cannot believe you guys allow yourselves to be subjected to his "analysis".

they are homers for sure but far more knowledgeable than most.

They call out bad play all the time. Long winded. I dont like 2 hour pods... personal preference

They call out bad play after the fact, but going into every season, they convince themselves that we are stacked at every position group. I guess I just don’t get why they do that. You can cheer for a team without lying to yourself and the fans, and that allows you to maintain your credibility.

I tend to only listen to the first half of every pod, when they discuss OU. Once they move onto other games, I’m usually done with my run … and done with them lol.

I would say 90% of folks are optimistic in preseason.

In season stuff they are pretty good. Take the preseason as a grain of salt with most teams.

I question whether some of you actually listen to them when you listen to them. Teddy was all over the D after the Auburn game and Gabe couldn't wait to tear into the offense after KSU.

Now, Thune and Drum, you're spot on about. Sunshine pumpers extraordinaire. Redosevich and Stoia are more middle of the road.

I’m very disappointed with the Arbuckle offense. I’m not sure you can blame it on one factor but it simply is not very good. Even with Mateer.
I think it falls back on the oline at the end of the day. I like his play calling and his concepts seem to get people open.
BB has finally started recruiting like a boss and I know he is a good coach because of his reputation, especially with the NFL, but man his olines almost always dissappoint lately.

I question if you actually read my comment since I expressly said they will criticize after the fact, but spend months leading into every season talking about how many talented playmakers our offense has. The reality is that we haven’t had any true playmakers at the skill positions in years. There is a reason none of our WRs or RBs will even sniff any draft boards. It’s not just a matter of our offense not executing. We just don’t have any dudes at the skill positions. Those guys should know the sport well enough to recognize that, and not just after a bad offensive game. I mean, even in the current pod, Gabe still talked about how much talent Hawkins has. He might be able to throw the ball a long way, but that’s about it. He’s now played in eight or more college games. Don’t evaluate him based on what you saw in spring practices. It’s so strange to me how often people do that in football. You don’t hear that in any other sport. “Boy, I tell you what, so-and-so had a couple really good at bats in our intrasquad scrimmage in early October.” In general, I think the OU media are way too willing to just accept the company line coming from the coaches and other players. Again, back to Hawkins … they were all so eager to report about teammates talking about how much better he is than last year. What on earth would you expect teammates to say? “Guys, he has awful mechanics, doesn’t have patience in the pocket, and his decision making is poor.”

I'm feeling pretty confident this is going to be a low scoring game.
I'm excited to see eli bowen and Gentry together.
They will likely be key to how well we play defensively.
Texas' oline isn't any better than ours, so if we can get pressure on arch, we have to have good coverage because he will throw it up for grabs.

With mateer I really like our chances.
Without him, I just don't know how we are agoing to move the ball. They have a great defense, despite how they looked at florida.
We haven't been able to run on anyone and hawkins scares me if he has to make plays. I'd expect a lot of bubble screens and jet sweeps and a lot of qb run

No inside info, but I am wondering if mateer suites up and is a back up plan for Hawkins in Saturday. Injury report days doubtful but if Hawkins struggles and ou is behind, they can try mateer.

I highly doubt that. If he is good enough to be a backup emergency, he is good enough to start.

Hopefully we see the special teams of the past three weeks, rather than the Michigan game. That is one way to take pressure off the offense. The defense creating more turnovers would also help. Both these teams have looked so bad on offense that a non-offensive TD could swing the game.

this is really not accurate when it comes to OU ..
I know you will cite advanced metrics, but you can't possibly have watched us through five games and think we are a good offense. What do we do well? We can't run. At all. Against any level of opponent. We produce almost no explosive plays in the passing game. Mateer has been good but isn't particularly accurate.

Has there been even one game where you walked away feeling like our offense looked impressive? Given how well our defense has played, and how often our offense has been set up to succeed, should we not be better than 46th in scoring offense and 54th in total offense? I've seen people on here argue that our defense last year was better than their rankings because the rankings failed to account for how many times our defense was put in bad positions, and how often they had to go back out after our offense went three-and-out or turned the ball over. Well, this year, it is the opposite -- our opponents constantly have their defense on the field. We should be able to take advantage of that.

I would love to know which specific categories boost our metrics. Our line hasn't run bock worth a crap all year, and we just struggled badly to pass protect against Kent State. In our two games against real opponents, we scored 24 points.

I would label our offense as OK.
Passing game is good. Running game is bad.

You want to know the crazy thing? If you take out Illinois State, Hawkins game against Kent State was the highest rated game by an OU QB this year (using the classic QB Rating formula). Kind of crazy
